Hot Rods The good and the bad

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Kerry, Apr 4, 2014.

  1. First the good, the digger is just about ready to go fast this year. I fixed a valve that got hurt when I ran her lean and melted the electrode off of the plug on #8. The exhaust valve bit it twice. The last thing I've done is upgrade from a 2" blower belt to a 3". No more tossing and shredding belts when I get off of the throttle during the burnout.

Now the bad. I've hurt the meniscus in my left knee pretty good. Waiting for the doc to examine the MRI and schedule the surgury. That means I'm not going to make it to MoKan April 19 like I was hoping to do. Heavy sigh. I'm trying to behave and stay off of it but I don't sit still very well.

The 4 port and Scoop are Beautiful, (and the rest of your Dragster) as well....
If it just got a Spark Plug and an exhaust valve.... I think that you were lucky, Piston would have been next and that can get ugly!

Sorry about your knee, knowing it is sitting in the Shop ready to run must be torture. :(

Have fun when you get it out, and let us know how good she runs! :D

  6. Thanks for the kind words fellows. :) I still find it hard to believe that God is letting me play with such a cool toy.

Larry, the Meniscus is the stuff in your knee between the bones. They might sew some back together but will likely shave off offending parts. You know, I've got knives and a dremel...

I had actually run her lean about a year and a half ago. All cylinders checked out OK except for #8. I pulled the head then & found the electrode melted in the piston and some scratches on the cylinder wall. That had to be it I figured. Pulled the piston and ground off the electrode, honed the cylinder and called it good. Trouble is the cylinder still leaked down big time. I thought there must still be to much of a scratch on the cylinder wall but w/o $$$ told myself I didn't care and ran it that way. Yeah, I know, I know...

This fall it occurred to me I had never checked the valves. Hmmm, I wonder...
About a month ago I pulled the head and sure enough, the exhaust valve had bitten the electrode twice and messed it and the seat up. I cleaned up the valve on my old Souix grinder and redid the seat. Added some shim under the spring to make up for what I ground off and I'm good to go now. Got her back together, ran the valves, gapped and installed new plugs. Ready to go racing!

Hope that you get better soon Kerry. Cars can be fixed easily, not so much your body parts.

    Love the dragster!

I have damaged my meniscus, and it hurts like mofo. Takes forever to heal. Simply, a cushion between your knee bones, and without it its bone on bone. Take Ibuprofin like M&M's to keep the inflamation down. I feel you pain brother....

They are better know as the cartridge in your knee. You have medial (inside) and lateral (outside side).

    Sorry about your knee.

As we age we learn a lot more about medicine, disease, aliments, and our bodies in general. Some things I really did not want to know.

Get well. We will run the ole girl another day.
