The good old days

It seems like whenever I get together with a bunch of old friends the conversation somehow always turns to a discussion about the Good Old Days.How everything was simpler then and how you could do things that you could never get away with today. I know everyone has a story about doing something that would never fly today so Ill start the ball rolling with one that Ill never forget.......
It was just before midnight on a Friday night in my local town and I was headed home after a night of cruising around in my 61 Vette that had a 427 big block stuffed in it. There was a two lane road heading out of town with traffic lights about every quarter mine. They put the lights on caution after 10 PM because there was no traffic at that hour. I was stopped at the last still working traffic light going out of town when a friend of mine in a 55 Gasser style Chevy pulled up alongside. You can probably guess what happened next. As we took off, out of the corner of my eye I saw a police car sitting at the end of the first side street we passed. I let off but my friend kept the pedal to the metal. The cop hit his lights and I pulled over immediately. One of the two cops in the car jumped out of the passenger side of his car and came running up to me. Before I knew it he was getting into the passenger side of the Vette with me as other cop took off in hot pursuit of the 55. He told me to follow the Police car which I obediently did for about 5 miles as speeds close to 100 mph. My friend finally realized what was going on and pulled over just out of town. I pulled up in back of the 55 and the police car and got ready to take my punishment. To make a long story somewhat shorter it turns out that the only thing we got was an ass chewing and a warning that if we were ever seen doing anything even close to illegal in town we would lose our license and be thrown in jail Those were the GOOD OLD DAYS!

Yes things were different back then. My friends and I used to brag about getting stopped by nearly every law enforcement department in the county, several city police depts., the sheriff dept. the D.N.R., And even a constable. We were drunk and underage everytime and never got so much as a ticket. Not necessarily good, but different.

Many years ago I was drag racing my 64 El Camino on the street. I was doing some light to light racing with a guy in a old Mustang. At the last light I lost traction (pretty normal in an El Camino) My rear tires smoked real good. Looking in my rear view mirror I could make out some red and blue lights. I pulled over right away and set my car keys up on the roof. When the cop came up to me I told him "You got me" To this he laughed and told me that he was young once too and understood the fun I was having. He told me I had two choices. Park the car and walk home or slow the fuck down and quit the racing. I drove like an old lady the rest of the night. I was a little drunk at the time too.

I remember as a kid riding in the back of my Dad's pick up truck. Try that now and you'ld be jailed for all sorts of things. I also remember riding in the trailer with my Dad driving a Farmall Cub, on the road, at night (6V lights, only a dim white light on the back of the tractor, no reflectors.) We were pre-teens, too.

Circa 1970 ... Me and a buddy dropped off a couple of college girl dates at their dorm about 11pm and proceeded to the back parking lot. We dropped the pipes at the header collectors on my hopped up '64 comet. I did a 7000 rpm clutch dump & long loud smokey burnout to "wake up the gals". Capped up the headers and passed a cop on the connecting road pulling into that parking lot with his blue lights flashing. That cop circled a local burger hangout we were at a few minutes later and evil eyed my car, but never stopped and asked if it was us. lol
