Event Coverage The HAMB Drags 2003... Were you there?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Jive-Bomber, Jul 15, 2014.

  1. This was year one with the pig on the Smoker rig that you see. And if you look closely behind me were some of the ingredients of the baste we used.

And I still have that Tshirt!

Year 2 is when the fire got away from us.

I was there the second year...'04. Saw Mel and BugMan with the '59 and hung out all morning waiting for the drags to begin. The early morning pass by "Tetnus" from Maryland was after he begged Carl to let him do a shakedown run since he'd been furiously trying to complete the car after towing it all that way unfinished. He pulled up to the line and floored it whereupon the steering shaft separated and he had an unattached wheel in his hands, lol. The car headed off to the left where it dropped off the edge of the pavement and , like mentioned before, unscrewed the oil drain plug as it slid along the asphalt. No harm done but Carl was a bit miffed! I looked under the car and saw the oil deal and followed the trail back to...the plug lying on the track. Yep, the guy screwed it back in and that part was fine. He worked the rest of the morning fashioning a repair coupling for the steering shaft from baling wire, hose clamps, some sheet metal and a duct tape top layer.
Fortunately for all involved, the Tech officials deemed the "repair" less than track worthy and his day was done. What a great time it was, and everyone got to make as many passes down the strip as they could stand. I think Denise brought cookies and there was an aerial ladder truck the photographer used for the group shot. Too cool.

    Denise always had cookies. Haha
04 was the first year my dad and me came up. I still think the next 5 years were the best

There is a small handful of us that were there every year, but I think it is single digits. Maybe Ryan will dust it off again someday. If so, I'll be there.

There were a lot of memorable cars (& people) at those early hamb drags. One that sticks in my memory is the @chicken yellow "T" coupe. iirc a gihugeie Cadillac engine that pushed that slab of wind resistance down the track VERY fast and VERY quick. I don't have any way of knowing it he was at the very first one but here's his avatar pic:

Sodbuster made two of those for the event, I had that one up in my shop until it crumbled with age and help of a bad storm. I believe the other was brought back for people to sign at the 10 year anniversary?
