Technical The HAMB Guide to Generator Identification

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Fan Attic, Oct 27, 2017.

  1. Greetings gentlemen, and ladies. I recently inherited a small hoard of automotive treasure to add to my large hoard and a**** the pile were several old generators. I searched here and out on the big wide web and was not able to find an authoritative compilation of reference material for helping to ID generators so I thought I'd ask for your help in creating one. I guess I am a little selfish so I'll start.
First is what I believe is a '32-'39 Ford flat head generator with the pulley mounted fan and top mounted regulator, but I don't remember seeing much if any early Ford stuff that didn't have Henry's mark on it somewhere and I can't find "FORD" on this anywhere? The generator uses two brushes, the body is about 4.5" diameter and about 7.5" from the rear bearing to back of the fan and uses a wide drive belt.

  2. Next I found this old generator with a piece of tape on it that said "DODGE". I've wire brushed it and used my good gl***es and can't find any sort of stamped identification but just can't throw anything away if I think someone could use it. This one also uses two brushes, is about 5" diameter and is 6.125" between the mount holes with about 0.375" thick bolt tabs.
Anyone know for sure where it belonged when new?

  3. Check the fan pulley on the Ford gen. Sometimes they have a casting number on them.

Are you sure the Ford gen. has only two brushes. Ones with a cutout mounted on top were normally 3-brush. The 2-brush units require an external voltage regulator. The fan mount on the pulley means that the generator was intended for '33 -'38 and '39 Standard. ('32 had a different mount)

Gen # 2 is a light duty Delco-Remy made after 1951 when the barrel becomes stepped.

  6. I'm with 302. 2nd one is a Delco unit

  7. Thanks FritzJr and choffman, I looked again and there is no part numbers anywhere on that "Ford" genny, just the "20 T" and the "M" in the half a hexagon on the mount arm. And you are right, there are 3 brushes with the cutout which looks original. I should have used a better light.
And 302 and Chopped, thank you as well. The second one does look a lot like a mid 50's Delco-Remey with the stepped case but there is no visible evidence it ever had a riveted tag on the case anywhere which seems odd for a D-R to me. Does the 6&1/8" inside mount dimension sound right, or is that a little short for Delco?
