The HAMB: Where did it all begin? Give us a history lesson

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Flathead Youngin', Nov 29, 2005.

1. Kinda off this topic, but I drove by the Go Away Garage once, it was right around the corner from my Dad's antique store. I cruised up that alley slow and cautious like in my MINIVAN and wished I had my camera. They had embossed heads and skulls in the front of the hoods of several cars. Does anyone have any pics of those?

Suffering from CRS, then posts like this give you flashbacks.

Fecals looking for a clown car
A very nice custom crushed from the rear.
Mud and the 4X4
"So Trailer Ed, why do you think cars suck?"
Gno Long Dong
Marcus spamming his stuff and everyone bitching about it.
Shag, Aaron, Jason, Killer and a couple others that USED to post alot. Sometimes even about car stuff :)
There are more posts on here now in an hour than there used to be in a week

"Hey, we have enough HAMBers now, we should put on our own event!"
Reading GERM's poetry and thinking: "What the hell was that all about?"
Reading GERM's poetry while drunk at 3 am and understanding it!
"What's an Orcabetty?"
Trying to figure out who was really who in disguise. Kinda like pulling the mask off of Batman and finding Bruce Wayne? "Is this guy talking trad rides actually spamming pro built billit streetrods in the magazines in his other life?
The Barbie Bike.
"El Mosquito"
Boy, wait till Germ reads this one? I can smell the smoke already.

I left a couple times when things died down or went too much into the "My tattoo is better than your tattoo" lifestyle crap or when I crashed or replaced a computer and lost my passwords and addresses before I finally stuck with this one. Thru it all, there's some good stuff on here all the time now. I think I lost it the first time when I switched from Mosaic to Netscape. This place is amazing now. You can probably ask what radiator hoses you need to put your 331 in a Model A and someone will have the part numbers in a half hour.

3. I found the site after meeting Ryan and Marcie at Hangin' Dice back in '99. I was sittin' here in the library at school (the first time I came back and took auto body, got to where I could afford it again and now takin' auto service tech as well), and ran across a couple of photos they had taken of my 59 bisayne and '51 ford...first signed on as "Mark" until another person by the same name started being a dickhead...changed it really fast to "hillbilly"....

I still like it here.

Later, Mark

I joined because of Tuck. I'm pretty sure I first saw the HAMB in September-ish 2001. Not quite sure how Tuck got ahold of the site...

I just remember one really memorable night when Tuck, Tokyo and I stayed up WAY too late picking on someone--really freaked him out by saying we knew where he lived and we were going to meet him at the golf course down the road from him. A certain, um...proctologist character we made up...

I'll never forget going to the first Drags...my first time drag racing...

Tokyo's HAMB Chop!

And, of course! All of the incredible people both Tuck and I have met through this place! I know that some of them will be life-long friends--and we never would have me them without the HAMB.
Pretty cool...

Im memberno. 60 or something like that.

I stumbled inn reading Lucky suggesting to place the taillights of a shoebox-Ford in the bumperguards and rund fake-antennas over mesh in the stock taillightholes. I thought that sounded cool. So I joined.

The pic Steve posted of Muds Camaro brought a smile to my face. I swear there were times laughed for hours over Steve, Mud, Dustin and Paul (from Brisbane)s endless duels. Rockin like Dokken, mullets flappin in the wind.

I also found guys who shared my passion for kustoms and their history; Lurker Mick, DrJ, RPW, Ron and more. I saw lots of seriously cool cars and learned a lot.

Here is Fecals the Clown. A good clown is a dead clown.

I first found the JJ around '98 when I was looking for a picture of my car on the net. (JJ was one of the sites mentioned by a friend.)
But I was in the middle of my Great Tour of American Drag Strips(tm), and on the road most of the time. The campgrounds I stayed at didn't have internet access, so I only checked in occasionally. It was fun reading the bizarre posts back then. Finally signed up after I got my garage built and quit the road trip.
Thanks, Ryan...

10. I started lurking after finding a link on Jasons old site mid 2001, probably lurked for about 6 months before signing up because hazing was brutal for newbies. Quickly learned to put up or shut up.
Have been privaleged to learn alot since then, met alot of great guys (and a couple of girls), and the HAMB experience has influenced my rodding walk since learning how to change oil like Aaron Von Knuckles.....;) :D

I sincerely wish Harlen was still around, as I enjoyed the linking of crap talk and TECH

Cheers,

Drewfus:)

Well, I'd just as well add my verison of how I got here...truth is, I don't really remember how that happened...

I think I posted something in the classifieds and was politely told to do an intro by whomever read it...I did, didn't get hazed or flamed...just quietly accepted and been here ever since.

Somewhere in the time I joined was Germ, but I missed Mud and the others...and was in before Denise joined...matter of fact, I think I encouraged her to join after she'd sent me an e-mail about one of my stories.

Shortly after I joined I posted a story I'd written in about fifteen minutes about what a PITA I was when I was younger -a story of misspent youth and dangerous cars...it was met with such "applause" (for lack of another word), I was encouraged to write another...I did so in half an hour and posted it the next Friday nite.

On the third Friday's story, I gave it a name: The Friday Nite Read. The stories continued for twenty-six Friday nites...somewhere in there, Brandon asked me to write a story for CK Deluxe, I did..about the same time JimA (then editor of GoodGuy's) asked me if I'd like to write for GoodGuy's...I couldn't believe my stories were that good but I accepted and have been writing for them ever since (now going on four years!). My first book was published in July, 2004 and my second book is now at the publisher.

I owe a great deal to this board, the people on it and especially to Ryan, whom I finally got to meet at the HAMB drags number Two...I've met many great people on here that share the style of cars I like...and continue to be on this board daily...it's part of my life!

Thanx to all...LONG LIVE THE HAMB!!!

my brother is an industial designer, and sent me a link to the jalopy journal around may of 99 while i was still in high school. the spark kinda stuck and i remembered how the cars had a purity and edge that i really hadn't seen. bought a 50 pontiac in 01 sometime and remembered the JJ in march of 02. then i saw something called the HAMB.... got hazed by a few, but i took it because i was pretty much a dumb shit and had some learning to do.

i remember el mosquito, but does anybody remember el tortuga???? that was some funny shit. but it all pales in comparison to christian's illustrious shit broiler. good times good times.

I don't want to throw a wrench in what's taking place in this thread, but do any of you have copies of some of the more famous threads? Could ya post them for us rookies? I need a good laugh.......just got home from the wife's kidney stone surgery.......she's a bear!

Maybe even the "old wound" ones will be laughed at now and not start a fire storm.....

I've searched but they only go back so far..........that one with Germ and (can't remember) was great stuff...

17. Ryan Cochran preaches the hot rod gospel

Ryan Cochran may be young, but he lives in the past, at least in terms of his automotive interests. He's fascinated with old- school hot rods, the kind that you would have seen in 1950
Cochran and his buddy, Kevin Lee, have everyday jobs in the Internet technology world, but when it comes to cars, they're steeped in tradition.

Cochran, of Kansas City, hosts a cool Web site called Jalopyjournal.com. Its message board is a lifeline for hot rodders from all across the country, and it spreads the hot rod gospel from coast to coast and beyond.

Traditional hot rods are experiencing a resurgence, and Lee and Cochran are riding the crest of a new wave.

Cochran's car is a pristine 1938 Ford coupe that he drives at least once a week. Because its fenders have a few rock chips, he said his '38 is too rough to be perfect, yet it's still too nice to be a rat rod. Cochran found the body in a barn. It still has its original black paint, although it has been polished and coated with clear lacquer. It now sits on a modified aftermarket frame. The Mustang II front suspension has airbags for ground clearance while driving. The rear axle has coil-over shocks.

There's nothing old school about the engine, a 424-cubic-inch Chevrolet race engine that has been detuned for the street. Cochran surmises that it pumps more than 600 horsepower through a four-speed transmission into a 9-inch rear axle.

Lee's hot rod is about as traditional as a car can be. It looks exactly like something from 1950. The chopped roadster body sits on a Model A frame. It has a flathead Ford engine that Lee found in a junk store. He made the streamlined nose from commercial trash can lids.

Handmade spun aluminum wheel covers fit over wire wheels that are mounted with skinny reproduction tires. The gas tank is bolted above the rear axle.

Lee's rod is pure nostalgia. It represents a time when a hot rod was experimental, dirty and more about innovation than money. The crude paint, hand lettering and bare interior capture that essence.

Cochran and Lee are planning a project to build a 1930 Ford coupe for the Bonneville Salt Flats. Their goal is to create a car capable of 200 miles per hour, yet they want to drive it all the way to Utah. Just like the old days.

Kevin Lee, above, built a roadster that is the epitome of old-school

Lets see I started posting on the Hamb when I was like about 12 and about to turn 13 or already 13 I can't remember.. BUT I am 20 now. So you do the math as to what year that was. I found my way here through speedfreak posting a pic on another board of a Honda with the ass end blown off cause of NOS and thought it was funny and started talkin to him and he told me about this place.... Its prolly changed my life lol...I missed more days of middle and high school cause of this place then anything lol. I remember talkin for hours to Mark "hillbilly", Richie, and Zeke when he had the 54 with dreams of stuffing a FE in it. And a guy that called himself JAM.. but changed it to something else and can't remember it. I dunno if he is still here even. Had a couple of boat tail buick, and f-bird hull and a shit load more. I dunno but I talked to him forever. And met El C and Randaddy. Cool people. Lets see I got my permit and licence while I was on here. My first ticket. Lost my virginity while I was on here. Got my heart broke for the first time and thought I was gonna die while I was one here. Bought and sold around 40 cars since I been on here. I LIKED being the youngest... OH and I started posting with the name Cole. Until Phantom named me spudz... And its stuck since then. I remember when you could write secret messages, and posts stayed on the top page for a few days lol. As long as the HAMB is still here I will always be a part of it. Oh and someone asked if anyone remembers asshole... he has a bubble top or somethin right??? I remember cussing him out and then acused kustom7777 of being him lol.

Much like cheese, so are the days of our lives.
We begin as milk, freshly drawn from the teat of the mother cow.
We are then curdled in the barn of knowledge, or lack thereof.
Our journey begins when Jennifer (she of the 38DDs) the handmaiden gently brings us into the world, spurting, gushing and dare I say, jizzing into the bucket of traditional hot rodding.
It is here in the bucket that we ferment, wallowing in the stubborness of our ways that we find the way back to our assholes. We know that there's a better way, we know that 4bbls ALWAYS work better than 8 deuces, but we soldier on bravely because we're retards. We are relentlessly stupid.
We don't play to backing tracks, because no matter how sloppy the end result, it's always better to know that we at least had a hand in the outcome.

We are not either one of the fucking Simpson horsehead sisters, fuck them, and Nick Lachay too.

No good will ever come of this.

This is an anachronism. There's no way "Watch With Mother" is relevant in a "Dora the Explorer" world, but then again James Brown belting out "Sex Machine" will always be more woodalicious than any pile of shit that Usher can come up with.

This might be what the HAMB is to you. I can tell you that it is what the HAMB is to me.

21. Don't have any saved threads, but here's a piece from the Jalopy Journal that was done some time back: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/archive/TJJ/benchrodding.htm

There is an Internet site where you can find long lost stuff.
The old HAMB is out there.
Seems like C Word posted an address site some time back and if he drops in here maybe he could re-post it for us.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My history here dates from maybe 1997 or so.
I spent most of my time on the original Rodders Roundtable - which is not the same place as FatCat's Rodding Roundtable.
At the the time the Original Rodders Roundtable (ORRT) was a text only site and it took a lot of text to get something across.
The HAMB was all text as well.
I started dropping in on the HAMB when Miss Kittly, Deuce Boy and Ngo Longh Dongh were there.
Along with Germ, Mud and the other NorCal troops.
The ORRT and the HAMB got into a flame war, started by all things, a simple question about whitewalls.
Think I remember that part ok.
It got pretty hot and heavy for a while, things calmed down somewhat, but one guy at the ORRT couldn't let it go.
Just had to throw that last rock..
Cary Ataman (the ORRT owner) got pissed, can't blame him and took the ORRT off the air.
Too bad in a way, the ORRT was getting pretty big, by then had photo capabilites - as did the HAMB - and the ORRT could've went somewhere in my opinion.
All water under the bridge now.
A great many of the ORRT'rs who hadn't been perusing and taking part in the HAMB until the shutdown came over.
A couple years after that the HAMB seemed to take off straight up.
The biggest reason for the success of the HAMB?
The people to a great extent and especially the knowledge base on a wide range of subjects.
Ask someone here about the circle of fifths and you're not gonna get a history lesson on piled up whiskey bottles.
What makes the HAMB really successful is the light touch on the helm.
Too many boards have moderators who are quick to step on anything they perceive as a little too . . . whatever.
Authority for most is hard to handle and they use it every chance they get.
The HAMB is more lenient and for the most part self-policing, but being allowed to pursue a subject and strike off on tangents is what does it I think.
It is interesting where some of this stuff goes and it's gonna be interesting to see where the HAMB does go.
To boldly go where no one has gone before is not only a perogative of those who travel to worlds far away, but to us earth bound souls as well.
Make it so....
I showed up through a link I found at Mart's site. I did a search on hotbot for "true hot rod" and "real hot rods". "Old hot rods" didn't net much and I didn't know what traditional was - I only knew that "real hot rod" was the closest description I could think of for what I wanted to see and eventually own. I knew very little when I showed up - nearly everything I know about traditional cars now I learned either here or in my garage.
A while after joining someone was asking about a HAMB decal, so I banged out a stylized version of Ryan's '38 and he PMed me. That's when I realized he lived in Kansas City so I just called and dropped a CD by his house. We've been friends since then.
So stoked I found this place.
Edit: And I just read C9's reply. Very nice. You're all smart and stuff - you should write a book.
Great thread...
I was'nt looking for a Message board when I stumbled on to this place because I didn't think such a place existed. Since, I've found out that it is full of every thing I dig and more of what I want to learn about, cool helpfull people and a place I look forward to checking in on a couple of times a day, and my wife and kids finally except it. I look forward to meeting more HAMBers at the '06 drags. Thanks to Ryan and all of the cool helpfull people that contribute...
I used to look at the Hot Rod Deluxe website everyday to read that Aaron dudes dailly writings and I found the Hamb there....
It creeped me out kind of, as most the internet still does...
I used to view it on Web TV haha
It seemed hardcore and real. I felt like I was completly stupid compared to those guys... It was awsome, like a live Hot Rod magazine.
I remember my very first post was in a post that someone had started on "what are you building" or something.....
I said I was building a period correct 80's 33 ford and was trying to find an early credit card key switch. hahahaha
everyone just ignored me.
I did no intro.. I would post things that I thought was funny, but no one seemed to care..... I felt like that kid standing outside the inner circle at school..... I was invisable.
Then I finally asked what year mustang gas tank to use in my 51 Ford and Rocky replied.... he told me to use a falcon tank because the fill hole was in a better spot.......
Then I asked about putting the chrome in the window moldings of it after I chopped it and 48 hemi completly helped... It was the coolest.
I finaly got my roadster on the road and had no way to post pics on the web tv.... I got a real computer a few months later and I finally posted pics..... then it seemed that I was "accepted"...... even though I had been posting for over a year....
I had alot of late night fun, making fun of people and laughing.... it was great.
I would say whatever the fuck I wanted..... trying to push the envolope....
I thought for sure I'd get kicked off a couple times, but it seemed I just gained respect. Its really neat when I think about it...
The Hamb for me started as a learning tool, and a place to make fun of morons..... it was great for that...... it still is.
It has evolved though, some of the friends I have made here are some of my best friends..... ( some of the others I have met are fucking scary though hahaha)
I feel as though I have grown with the Hamb..... I've learned so much, but I still have a long way to go......
I actually found the HAMB about the time everybody was splitting up, Ryan was going solo and i thought i would hang out and see where it went...seemed like there were more and more talented people showing up and sharing their wisdom.......
i do remember my wife walking in the shop when we were unloading stuff from the machine shop...."whats all this stuff stamped HAMB?".........
oh, thats for that engine we are building for the internet message board i say...
"what?"
yea, and next month we are gonna haul it down to california and give it to three guys i have never met........
"ARE YOU FUCKING NUTS?"
how time flies.............
