Projects The Hardscrabble Hop-Up; A 1940's Style 'T' RPU build

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by gwhite, Jul 21, 2013.

  1. No chrome, just a little nickel here & there...the wishbone is tub in da dirt's...I'll let him slide because he's got a Vicky - the hot rod for discriminating Mister Fancy-pantses. :)

    I'm going to attempt stitching a top...need to find a good set of top irons to chop up first.

  2. A buddy went to Lars and imported it back to the third coast for me. I have an axle spindles and perches ill chrome some time soon

  4. Thanks! Hoping to get healthy so I can get the chassis together. Will be nice to see what it looks like as a roller!

    And bump for window ID; anyone know what this came off of?

    Looked at it a little closer it does have a two side frame? Early Hudson's had 2 in there runabout very close to that size. Lots of high dollar custom coaches had opera curtains.

  7. Sweet, thanks for the lead! I always like to ID parts whenever I can.

    The frame is 2-sided, nickel plated brass with a stamped steel reinforcement. Looking at photos of brass-era Hudsons, there is a strong resemblance. The 1917 Mercer looks like a close match as well;

    Thanks for the ID.... I found an antique car pressurized tank at Stafford Speedway Swapmeet this spring for my 32, and now I know what it is. It is 20 gallons, and lots of nickle plated stuff on it. Dang, the seller had the transmission, rad and shell, but missing the emblem, the wheel and column/box, but I had no idea what it all fit...and the stuff was cheap..:rolleyes:

    I used 37Kid description on google and found this link to a tribute car to an old famous salt car (Calori)with the complete Cadillac tank:

    Funny story behind me getting this tank back to the car...hope not to bore you.

    I know the owner of ECI brakes, as I was in his hotrod club which runs that swap. Ok, so he sees me in the AM and asks what I'm hoping to find today..

    I say "gas tank for my 32", and some other thing I forget..

    Well he was stationed right at the track entrance, and I had to go out that way. I was embarrassed to be buying a rusty old tank for my build, and didn't really want him to see it. So, because he is wicked smart and has a Masters in Mechanical Engineering, I blurted out "how do I find out how many gallons this is?"

    Ha, I knew he'd be more interested in calculations, and not even notice me buying a rusty tank.:D He quickly said "Give me the L-W-Height measures".. and he had all the formulas in his head.:cool:

  11. Still hurt, no progress. Just have better pics of the steering wheel swap & dash;

    Not sure which ammeter I like better - the smooth bezel or the wide bezel...thoughts?

    Looks good, Bro!! Totally dig that wheel and column. I need to do something else with mine and you've given me a good idea. That column drop is the tits too!! You have a bunch of unique parts for this deal, that's for sure. It's going to look classy and slick, not hack jobbed and beat up like the "Dust Bowl"!

    Smooth bezel looks more in tune with the rest of the dash. Just my $.02

    I'd say the smooth bezel, it matches the pressure gauge better.

    The smooth bezel gets style points for matching the rest of the instrumentation.

    But the big bezel gets I-threw-this-together-during-the-depression-dammit points.

    Hard call. I'd go wide.

    Wide bezel. It looks like it was left over from the Model T and you just said, Oh what the hell.

    Looking better every time I look at this thread! I'm with Rainerhooker on this. The smooth one matches well. I think I'd move the dash wings a bit to the right and run the wide one.

  20. Ha! Yeah, I'm torn...being laid up with the bum wing has me in a serious and long-term overthinking mode ;)

    I would move the St. Christopher medallion over, but it's covering the carb adjustment hole...decisions, decisions...

    Man, You are sure putting a great collection of parts in your "T" RPU ! I may have to find a set of Model "A" top bows for my 29 "A" RPU/Modified. Don't shoot me my mill is a '87 Ford Mustang with 5 speed tranny . . . every thing else is vintage. Front axle is '41 Ford punched with holes, rear axle is a freshened up '41 Ford car rear axle with 3.78 to one gears. Dash is a '38 Ford car.

    Like some of us have said, the smooth bezel matches the pressure gauge but like others have said, the wide one works for other reasons.....Guess we're not much help!!! Either way, which ever one you don't use, send it up to me, the Dust Bowl would gladly take your left over!!

    Hey, gwhite, I really like the combo of T headlights and T shell. Very period correct. If you decide to sell your Guide 903's, I would be interested since I have been collecting parts for ONE LAST BUILD kinda secretly. My wife doesn't know about the HAMB, so I'm free to "gather" in peace. Please let me know if you are contemplating selling your headlights. I live in San Antonio.
