Very very cool. It’s trips like that where real memories are forged. I always love seeing David’s roadster but paired with yours and the way you shoot brings it up another level. Immediately makes me think of the Mark Morton era of hopup in the fondest of nostalgia soaked ways. Cheers to another great Friday
The writing, the photos, the emotions expressed. You might just have a career in this stuff, Joey! That shot of the 2 roadsters under the arches should be framed and hung in your house.
Mr. U., your contributions are without a doubt one of the highlights of this here forum! Another one for the books. Thanks, man!
Fantastic! I had thought to drive down for it, and regret that I decided not to. I hope you don't mind that the picture of both your and David's cars under the skylight in front of that incredible art-deco gate is now my background...
Got caught in a rainstorm after attending a memorial for the guy that assembled my Zipper. Absolutely amazed that the rooster tails off all 4 wheels never hit the interior. I can identify with that feeling of pure adrenaline driving a fender less roadster in the rain.
Very cool and entertaining narrative. Excellent way to begin my day. I’m digging that pic in black & white.
UNDER THE ARCH! That photo is the BOMB!!! Cars fit the architectural timeline. Great story as well, thanks for sharing!
Bravo, young road warrior @J.Ukrop ! It take's leather balls to play RUGBY, and it takes the true intestinal fortitude, that only a true gear head possesses, to go out, and drive in the rain, such as you have. Great writing, great photography ! All of us younger and older "GEEZERS", comfortably live vicariously, through your adventures and great automotive journalism ! Thanks from Dennis.
Great story, and pictures, as usual! Been there with the no top, hard rain in a roadster. Not fun. Went through three thunderstorms between Bowling Green and Memphis. Just me and the big trucks on the interstate, in driving rain. Finally had to stop with wet ignition, and me wet to the skin. Inspired me to get a top.
Sometimes, getting wet is part of the adventure. That is what memories are made of. As my daughter pointed out, "you are not made of sugar"
love the pictures, great job. Nothing like getting wet in a roadster. I recall in 1975 I was young and dumb drove from South Bend Indiana to Memphis to the NSRA Street Rod Nationals with a string of hot rods and it rained for five days. I had a top but no side curtains. We were wet and cold but what fun after looking back. My wife was with me, and she has stuck with me 53 years, guess that is true love. Been through many cars and many trips down the road together. Drove my 1948 Chevrolet Woodie wagon over 150K through 33 states! Many great times and friends made. Rock on!
Nothing else like driving a fenderless, topless roadster in the rain! So often people ask what happens if it rains? Easy answer - I get rained on.
Hey J, What a great image of the whole proceedings of the San Francisco scene. My memories of the downtown areas, the Ocean Beach coast the old multi-story homes we visited and the Fort Point surf spot all add to the whole San Francisco days/nights. Your story was one of the best so far. It was thoroughly enjoyable reading it and reliving the exact times we were in S.F. during our different era days and nights there. From 1947 to 2019. Including a nice dinner visit to a friend’s house in those tall narrow buildings on a sloped street so prevalent in San Francisco during college days of 1965-66. Jnaki It is a pleasure to read such a great written story. It is photojournalism at its finest… YES!
@jnaki, thank you for the kind words. Your memories of the City by the Bay always bring a smile to my face. Please give me a shout next time you are up here!
I play music at the Sausalito rowing club. That 40 is always parked there. I wonder if the owner lives on one of the boats docked there.
This morning, I was up in Marin and it was raining. I couldn't help but think back to this perfect day. As some of you may know, the Civic Center shot was the subject of last year's postcard. I'm cooking up something new for this year, but that's a story for next time.
