But they do their "salon" sales that do have a reserve. Surely for a price, and it would have to be Scottsdale for that as I don't think they offer it at all of their sales.

Speaking of reserve, how about a guess to that? My guess was your 1st hit at $500K but I think it tops it. If Mecum puts themselves all in and markets the car well the right final 2 bidders could show and drive the bids high. Worldwide just sold a 42 Packard Darrin, a really nice one, but it hammered at $800,000 plus 10% for a sale of $880,000. There isn't (wasn't?) a Darrin ever made that was worth that but can't say it now. Significant cars kill when inflation is high and the econmy is full of speed bumps. It always has been that way. All results are showing that right now IF, and ONLY IF, it's something significant. We also get more action, more bidders who have the means and realize all of this stuff is financially recognized tangible assets. Been holding anyone? Time to think about it...

 

I'm thinking it will be in the $1 million range. Customs may not historically sell that well, but then again what other custom has been put on display on the National Mall?

I was basing my question about what Mecum paid for it on this supposition. I know they are "only" an auction house.

 

Way too much, and then to be locked away in some gold chain, pinky ring wearing snobs collection never to be seen by again.

 

My first thought was $500.000 and I am sticking to that. Realistically I would say its near that million mark due to the history of the car and just from a market look a custom Merc is the best type of custom to sell as its "the" custom car, kinda like how a 32 Ford is "the" hot rod, but customs at auctions usually run low it seems. I hope it brings more than the half a million Im guessing. I feel the car deserves that.

 

To be honest, not everyone with wealth is a "gold chain, pinky ring wearing snob". There are quite a few fine automobile car collectors who are fortunate to have significant funds but share their collections.The Simeone's in Philadelphia, Jay Leno, the Justice Brothers out in CA. They're out there.

Which brings up two more thoughts. If I spend all that money and keep it in my garage, is that different significantly from you not wanting anybody to see your own small collection of, say, petroliana? If you buy it, isn't it yours?
Two, how is buying it an putting it away different from the guy who stashes a garage full of Deuces he's "going to fix up someday"? so they're not for sale as they rot into the ground?

It's iconic and it's historically relevant, but it's not Great in the broad sense of the word. Not even every diehard customs person likes it, though everyone recognizes it's significant place in the evolution of customs. Cross the number of potential buyers who really love it with the subset of those who can afford it and that is probably a pretty small number. But, then again, it only takes two bidders to run it up. It is fun to conjecture. We'll see,

 

The car has to be one of the most recognized customs of all times. I think the car goes over the million mark and maybe reaches close to two. There are several big money collectors around for this type of icon. Final answer 1.5 to 2.0 million.
