Here's a sign of the times for you. "A" bomb blast brightens L.A. at 5:20 a.m. as seen from the 9th Street cutoff of the Harbor freeway. Photo dated: March 12, 1955.
Must have been doing this in the desert. Testing of the atomic bomb on Bikini Island, as seen from a tower built for recording and scientific data, July 29, 1946. Note the water funnel under the plume of smoke.
thats way far away from L.A.....about 3,000 miles, thats not desert, thats ocean..... look in my album marked "misc. photos" on my profile page to see that last A bomb detonated above ground in 1962
I know, that's just the only A-bomb pic I have. I'm saying, that's what was going on......how far away? 50 miles? 100 miles?
I tell ya, I LOVE vinatge pics and have thousands in my collection...some of these I have never seen....KRAZY stuff !! Esp love the before and after pics in LA suburbia and traffic/everyday life shots....AWESOME !! Thanks for putting em up !! Rat
Ryan ,This is bar far the BEST post you have done yet ! All the pictures of days gone by and to see the way things use to be with all the quality craftsman at work to the hot rods and of course the Babes ! It's a real disappointment when you look at where we have all come to in today's world when we are suppose to be better with progress and has gone downhill so fast to where we are today ! It was nice to be able to walk the streets to have fun with our friends and not be afraid of what was around the corner ! No drug dealers or "Homies" ready to beat & kill you just for the fun of it . I see the wooden floors at the Pep boys and remember the wooden floors in the one in Rhode Island when I was a teen . There were the same in the A&P we bought our groceries from . how about the gas stations that would fill your tank and really give you service and say "Thank You" for stopping by ! I hope you can post more picture of the times we all wish we lived it . Ryan , Thank you again for the journey through time when things were far better then than today ! RetroJim
we would put this cardboard sign in our front window. That would tell the Helms man to stop...we needed DONUTS!!!!! Donuts in the morning and ice cream in the afternoon...damn great way to grow up another photo taken by my Dad in Pasadena, just east of L.A. The cops were having a good laugh at the expense of this drunk
That's one of the things that's so great about these old photos, the older you are, the more you notice. The Civil Defense siren, the wicker furniture, the phone booths, etc.
Los Angeles Coliseum 1932 Olympic games were held here. After WWII they held midget races around the track and many years after that Mickey Thompson staged "off-road" races and motocross races here. It would be used again in 1984 when the Olympics returned to L.A. My grandfather took me to see the Dodgers play in the coliseum while the new Dodger Stadium was being constructed. right before the parade lap...
Fans in Grandstand at Turn 6 shout approval as Carroll Shelby speeds by in his sleek and swift "birdcage" Maserati. Shelby won the $20,000 Internatio<WBR>nal Grand Prix at Riverside. Photo dated: April 4, 1960.
Tony Nancy finds his 'Wedge' has better traction and more horsepower at the low end, coming out of the gate. Photo dated: June 14, 1964 Dan Gurney
When a dime could actually buy something. We got into the Saturday movie matinee (remember that?) for 6 RC Cola bottle caps. The Coke machine was 6 cents, nickel, penny, push lever.....
To Ryan and everybody who took the time to post the pictures, that was great looking back at the way it was. I have learned more history here on the HAMB then I ever did in school.
As a collector of Automobile Club Of Southern California traffic signs these photos always blow me away.
