Projects The Hitchhikers Guide Episode VI: Return of the Hitchhiker.... Hot Rod Model A banger

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Hitchhiker, Feb 15, 2013.

  1. I'm still getting everything ready to bolt on, I will show everything once I get that far. I'm planning on breaking in the motor on the stock stuff then making the switch, I am also running short on time and want to make the flathead run, so all the mods might happen after if I don't have enough time.

Thanks! I guess my concerns come are that I doubt anyone built a Winfield equipped pickup. If you look at the 1940's period correct hot rod thread. There aren't any trucks...I just wasn't sure how strict things were going to be, but as it turns out I have nothing to worry about.

That's okay. I plan on driving it year round....Note to self:. better get that windshield wiper working. :D

Matt, Do you think you will make the E vs W run? I'm beatin feet to get my A there too! I just go the brakes working and took it for a spin around the driveway this evening! Here she is now, I'm hoping I'll have it ready for the run. If you make it I'll park mine next to yours, well that is if I get mine done!

  3. Both you putz's better be there! Chris that 28-29 is BITCHIN! How well do you fit in it? :D

  4. I think I'll make it provided nothing goes wrong. Everything tends to come together for me all at once. I'm not sure I'll have the winfield stuff on it. But I figure that the engine will be broken in and ready right after the run. I'm hoping I'll have it all back together by the end of the weekend actually.

    Putz?????

Its a tight fit, but I don't have a real seat back, just some old patio cushions. But that stinken steering wheel is the tough part when I brake or push the clutch in. The flat head run will be the shake down, I might have to do somthing else with the seat and or steering wheel, or go back to a later pick up.

  10. Fenders are staying. That's the whole reason I bought this thing. I'll get my fend erless fix with something without a roof.

I need to come to grips with ours. I'm literally torn in 1/2 about witch way to go with it. The "HAMB" 1/2 wants a full fender slight rake hot rod. That look with 4 bar flippers and fat whites, a white top insert, some vintage hopped up power and white and red tuck n roll. I close my eyes and can see it clearly. The other 1/2 knows it would be so easy to restore back to it's original condition just because of what I have to work with. All the numbers are good, runs great, never a lick of rust in the cab and 1 little hole in the rear box support beam (already fixed). The mediator of this dilemma tells me to go just nice and mostly stock, maybe wheels n tires only for fun, maybe sell it and build something more practical for someone my size. I can run around ok but a long haul of say 60-70mi one way would not be much fun. I need a coupe. I also need to finish my others and maybe let Mrs Highlander drive the shit out of it until she's finally bored with it. A nailheaded coupe done the same way I see this truck would be heaven. Perhaps even skip the fenders.

  20. Well, since I can't post pictures I might as well tell you guys. I pulled the windshield for new glass as it had a huge crack and I also pulled the tank for cleaning and to replace the welting as it was leaking water when it rains from between the tank and cowl side, which surprisingly is the only place water gets inside the cab

  22. Thank god, I feared it was white metal splinters, you were talking about!
But this should be an easy fix, or what? :)

  23. Should be easy? The Fordbarn guys make the welting sound hard to install...hope not. When I had the fuel line off I noticed a little sediment build up in the fuel line. I thought it might be rust, but it seems like fine dirt. Its not metallic. Im going to try and wash it out with vinegar tomorrow and put it back in with the new welting. The windshield should be done Friday. Then I think I am a day or so away from firing after I dropping the engine, trans and rearend back in.

Hitchhiker, I read a thread in fordbarn about the late 31's collecting sediment in the tube that runs from tank to the shut-off. It happens because the hole through the shut-off sits a little higher than the bottom part of the tube. Remedy was to remove shut-off and use a long, thin, flat head screwdriver with a 90% bend at the tip as a scraper, and reach up in the tube.

How hard was it to get the tank out? I'm hoping mine doesn't need to come out, because from reading Fordbarn those guys make it seem as if taking out a late 31 tank is rocket surgery.

  25. I think what it comes down to is getting the bolts out. All the flat head machine screws that bolt the tank to the firewall top will be really hard to get out if there is any rust issues going on, like what you would find on something that has all the paint rusted off from sitting in a field. Luckily my trucks is super clean and everyone came out. Once you get the bolts out. The cowl top off and the windshield out it comes right out.

Hey Matt, the welting is not so bad, done a few. In fact, just did 2 this summer. If you can get on the MAFCA site look up tech articles. They are pretty good.

One trick is stapling little strips of cloth to the welting on the sides of the cowl to help pull it smooth. Have the top piece already bolted to tank. Get 2 buddies to help and go in evenly. Much scarier looking than it is.

    Good luck.

  27. Welting is not too hard on 28-29s, but it has been a few years, and I am about to do it again this winter. I am sure it will not be too difficult. One key I remember is to unroll it ahead of time to get some of the wrinkles out. I cut notches/slots by the bolts and pull things tight from the inside as I need to while tighten the bolts. For me, rear fenders are the hardest; but mostly it is just a matter of taking time adjusting the fits as you tighten the nuts.

..enjoying following your build, and amazed at all the good early speed equipment you have come across.

  29. Re assembly thrash in progress. Hope to fire tomorrow? Or day after. Lots to do. No time for many pictures. Here is a firewall shot to hold you over.
