Projects The Hitchhikers Guide Episode VI: Return of the Hitchhiker.... Hot Rod Model A banger

  1. I hope so. But I think the noise is from the front of the engine.

going to after I get done with customer stuff.
I hope you're right! Thanks for all the support you've given me with this thing.

    Thanks!

    Will double check all those.

    I hope so.

I unfortunately don't have the luxury of walking away. I seriously need a car to drive.

Worse case scenario a stock motor goes in for the time being.

Maybe pull all your plugs, and try and hand crank the motor over. You may be able to isolate it to one stroke or cylender that way, or if there is constant drag, then suspect crank or bearings.

If it is the former, it should be fairly strait forward to pull the side cover and see if maybe you lost a valve, or if the latter, pull the pan and start poking around...

  6. An old time mechanic buddy told me to, spray wd40 down the spark plug holes. So I did. Noise gone and turns over much easier now. I'm assuming i got the rings hot while cranking and it didnt like that. The only question is, do I pull it apart and inspect or just go for it...

Btw also tried it on 12 volts today. Still no start.

OK when you were having carb problems did you flood out a cylinder ? (wash it down?) Why not soak them all with oil and try it again? Since it did not run, maybe it didn't score the cylinder. Got a borescope?

If there is no oil or assembly lube on cam thrust plunger and spring it can make a terrible a screeching sound. ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1412359966.979886.jpg

Did you get to work on it over the weekend? Curious what you found.

  13. I went ahead and poured some oil in the cylinders in hopes that I can smooth it out and get some compression built. I also pulled apart the carb and started really looking at it. Repainted the head and firewall as well, as I accidentally got stuff all over it....

The bottom needle of the pair is what was in it. You can see how worn it is compared to the one above it.

the brass screw valve is for the idle air control and as you can see it needs some work too.

  14. So did you figure it out??

  15. Well. Like I said I tore the head off and put oil in the cylinders. That took care of the noise. After that, I pulled the intake and carb and tore the carb all the way down. A little gas came out of the intake when I pulled it. 99% sure I washed the cylinders down. I hope it's okay. I'm waiting to borrow a a digital torque wrench from a friend to finish the head install and I have been messing with fixing the carb.

I'm gonna put a stock intake and carb on it at this point and try that.

Matt on all my personal engines I fire them up and run for the 1st 500 miles with the same manifold and holley 94 a carby I know is jetted correct and runs great on most builds also use a distributor that has only 10 deg mech advance set 18-28
I do this so I know it not rich or lean and the ignition not causing detonation important with a fresh engine
bed them in (500 miles) then start changing carbys ect

Great thread. I am amazed at how many similar things I planned on doing. Neat to see how it all goes together if I stick to the plan.

    Good luck with the engine.

    Impatiently waiting for an update..................

  20. Well, once this 96 Ford van, 2002 subaru, 2001 ford focus, 1998 f350 and the 67 t bird are finished I might have some time to work on it. If nothing else gets dropped off...

I just read through this and your coupe thread. Both contain very inspiring work. Best of luck with your start up woes!

  24. Thanks. Haven't been able to touch it.

Roof started leaking last night too, so don't expect much from me anytime soon.

  25. Hang in there, Bubba. Life happens, but you'll eventually get 'er done.

  26. Thanks man, Honestly the roof is just the tip of the iceberg. It's been a shitty year for my whole family with a series of unrelated events taking there toll on all of us.

    Nothing we can't over come.

I'm just ready for 2014 to be over. Not something I normally say.

Anyways. I'll keep at it. I'm gonna go fire up the heat and do a little bit.

    good news and bad news....

Good news is soon....bad news is....I just got my first "REAL" shop space so I am tied up just a little longer with moving and setup...so there you have it...:)

  28. You've likely done this but at times I have to step back, sort out the priorities and take care of business. I'm sure the truck will not be at the top of the list. We'll be here whenever you are able to re-group so exhale and don't be afraid to ask for help. Tim

  29. Thanks man, I'm working on it when I can.

Carb is done, head back on. working on finishing the master cylinder mount....

Here is the new place. It's small, but without all my personal car stuff it's enough.

Carb and head done? Does that mean you figured out the Winfield and up draft or the stock head setup to get you running you were working on.
