Hot Rods The Hitchhikers Guide:The Hot Rod Ford Model A or AV8 Coupe. Post war 40's build.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Hitchhiker, Sep 4, 2010.

  1. I was thinking I might carry a step stool. :p;)

The thing that really settled it was I couldn't get in it easy, even though it's easier after the rear step.

Yeah, I didn't really get that till post #437. I'm going to have it dropped 2 1/2 which will make it the same as a aftermarket 4 inch dropped axle for comparison, correct?

I have a set of 16 inch steelies 2 4 inch for the front and 2 4.5 inch for the rear being trued and powder coated black that will be getting tires as soon as I sell some things in the classifieds.

  2. Happy New Year to you and yours Dave! Looking forward to seeing your build.

Mmmm, that sounds rad and will totally work with what you want to do. See it has a way of working itself out. It's going to give a completely different look with the steelies and because you'll have fresh paint on them and new tires it'll give you a whole new boost of motivation towards your car. Can't wait to see it come together.....especially that flathead.

I've always wanted a flathead powered hot rod with wire wheels so that's my plan for my '33. I have a set of 16" wire wheels and brand new blackwall tires that are completely useless now that Chris made me want 17" wires/tires on that car. My brother caught whiff and bought me the wheels for Christmas so now I've gotta find $800 for the tires. It all snowballs out of control. Another example is how I got a fresh 8ba flathead with the car when I traded....but then I scored a set of 37-48 Weiand Cheater heads so now I'm searching for a new engine (I know you can run them on 8ba but). Snowballs I tell you!!!!

  4. Just getting the frame stepped was a huge boost. I can't wait for the rims and tires. As for the Flathead....I can't wait either, Building a bad ass Flathead is why I started to build this car. The engine I want..... It needs a nice wrapper. Gonna go full bore on that one. I'm thinking about putting the big scat stroker crank in it. time will tell.

  5. Hey you wanna sell those rear tires?

  6. Correct

  7. I could be talked into it....I also have another set. They aren't super nice or anything. but good rollers/first runners. Pm me.

Just catching up on your thread. Your making great progress! I am knee deep in a flathead project myself - I'll be posting when I get a little further along. I have been reading every book/thread I can get my hands on. I have read some bad stuff on scat cranks but that was for blower motors - see where I'm going??

  11. Hmmmmm, looks like somebody scored an extra rolling chassis.......

If that steering wheel is any kind of good I'd have probably swapped you that dash rail instead of cash.......;)

  12. It's J scow's actually. Brother from another mother. We are building him a 28-29 A cowled, T back halfed RPU on a stock A chassis. The wheel is junk. But works.

  13. I REALLY need a wishbone saddle mount cut out from a later frame to attach my wishbone to my crossmember.

  14. What kingpins do I order with a 36 front axle and round back spindles?

  15. Hitchhiker,

Have you considered using (what i assume, since i haven't gone back through the thread) later bones with the model a center section and use a reproduction wishbone mount and mount the top cup into a mount or crossmember?

  16. I'm using 33-34 bones. They are really close to my crossmember already. I have a saddle mount from a 33-34 car I just got today and a crossmember with wishbone mount from a 33-34 big truck. I'm going to use one of those to make the mount off the front of the f1 crossmember.

Order the kingpins to suit the spindles - roundback are 37-up. Order the 37 style kingpin set. It also is normally the cheapest.

Hurry up Hitch and get that foot healed so we can get some progress pics!!! I'm excited to see you got that saddle mount. That's going to help move things along.

I've got a saddle mount coming any day not from Cory Swenson that I need to put back in my frame. I also have 3/4 of the money needed for some new tires so by may I might just have a frame with suspension minus shocks. I basically need you to get going to pump me up!!!

Oh and Mart's correct on the spindles.

  19. I have a nice 30-31 steering wheel and an OK red AR wheel if you need an A wheel...

I think that frame might belong to me.

  21. Thanks Mart.

I'll do what I can......I should have a drop axle picture up in a few days. :D

    You building something similar?

  22. Thanks for the offer Chris. Rolf and I did some tradin' Saturday so I'm now covered for that.

If it's J custom's frame I lent it to him about four years ago and haven't seen him since. I'll take $100 for it.

  24. Ah, Not J custom....Not sure who that is. My friend Jancsi(J scow) bought it as a complete roller about a year ago for $400 from a street rodder in Sammamish who took the body for his build.

    My mistake, sorry to interrupt.

  26. Not a problem, I'd be looking for my frame too.

  27. This just showed up.

I did a lot of comparing of pictures of dropped axles. I could have gone with a local fellow that does nice work, But by far the nicest I have seen are done by our own 296 V8 AKA Greg. If you need a drop axle I highly recommend him. Simply amazing work.

    You can find him here.

If I can get someone to come help me....READ: do the work. I might get this thing installed this weekend. J scow? ;)

Unfortunately those are the best shots I can get right now As I am not capable of pushing it out of the garage with my ankle the way it is. thanks for looking! I'm super anxious to get back to work and get this thing further along.
