Very early aircraft side draft carburetors.

We grew up watching one of the most unusual race cars at Lion’s Dragstrip, near our Westside of Long Beach house. The Sidewinder race car was a Paul Nicolini creation and modified by Joe Mailliard when we saw it. (Sidewinder 2) In the early days it was unusual and the different drivers tried their best to get some power to the ground and go fast.

Cota Avenue was 4 blocks from our last Westside of Long Beach house.

The 414 cubic inch Chrysler Hemi motor with a Isky 5 Cycle Cam Venolia pistons, Schiefer clutch and flywheel, Joe Hunt Scintilla Vertex Magneto, a stroker crank, 671 supercharger, and Hilborn Injectors. For $1300 what a deal! (check out the current inflation results! )

“I will personally guarantee 150 mph and under 10 seconds in the ¼ mile drags. Trial runs to be made in our “Sidewinder” chassis.”

By the time we saw it, Joe Mailliard had taken over the build and tuning of the unusual race car. The various motors tried had different concoctions and were unusual to say the least.

The Sidewinder was one of the most unusual builds in all of drag racing, with its history well documented.

In 2017, I was introduced to Jack Gillett (at the original, Lions Dragstrip Museum Grand Opening) who showed me his creation for all of us to see and hear as if it was 1959.

Joe's carbs were up draft carbs from a WWII tank.

 

I finally found a vintage WEIAND 2x4 carb adapter for my 471 blower. I will post pictures when it arrives. Time to get some carbs ready.

Here is the rare and hard to find 2x4 471 carb adapter. Of course I had to polish it. I removed as little material as possible when sanding and put a mirror finish on it.

Bowers and Paris Altered Fiat Coupe

The Jerry Bowers/Red Paris Altered Coupe #440 was well known in So Cal. The reconstruction version now owned by Jerry Rushing, is a favorite for those that have seen it in the different Lion’s Dragstrip Museum make overs. (2017 original and the 2019 remodeled space.)

The Hemi motor was a great example of what was the popular build during those hectic Altered Coupe vs Altered Roadster days.

The vintage adapter is mounted and the carbs rebuilt. I have a base line blower tune in them. I am making linkage and a bracket for the fuel pressure regulator . I am pondering running a old shark mouth scoop I have or run it like this.

 

Probably not much air flow in those filters.

 

Just for mock up^^^.Squirrel - Jim runs those paper filters on his gasser. I had them laying around in my stash and set them up on to see how it looks.

 

How did they get the rubber marks in the floor of the museum? Real application or paint?

The Altered Class Bowers and Paris Fiat Coupe and Winged Express T-Roadster put their driveshafts back in place and did several burnouts to fill up the whole cavernous warehouse space... with some smoke... WELL...
"Pssst...Hey... lets put the driveshaft back in and squirt some fuel in the injectors. We can leave some burnout tracks without anyone suspicious during the lunch break. Everyone will all be gone to lunch and no one will be the wiser...!!! HA"

Realism, but far fetched...although those Altereds can be run in any place once they are set up again...

But, in this case in 2019, the fantastic artists involved in the drag racing artwork all over the museum on set up days did the realistic art. Check out the HAMB threads on who is who in that art work at the Lion's Dragstrip Museum. Close up, it definitely looks like someone was happy on a full throttle run.

 

Hello,

Joel Gruzen’s version of Gary Cagle’s old Roadster is immaculate. The effort is amazing, it is just like seeing Gary Cagle in the original Newhouse Roadster blasting down the Lion’s Dragstrip back in those early days.

For me, the twin Hilborn Injection set up is what we saw in those early days, but, the “Bug catcher” is a nice clean system, too. A toss up for choice, that is for sure.

Yea Steve. Got some tuning in the day before Thanksgiving. I have the tune very close, A/F numbers looking good, just a little tweaking yet. The throttle response is fantastic. I have the old dragster scoop body worked and almost ready for paint. I really like the 2x4 set up on the vintage carb-blower top.
