My name is Lou Weinert and I'm located in San Francisco. I'm a director/cameraman who works on everything from movies to commercials to no-money do***entaries. I've been into cars of various shapes and sizes since I was a kid. I've watched with interest as car/chopper culture has been distilled for general consumption on the Discovery Channel. Though I'm a huge fan of those shows, it wasn't until going to Billetproof a few years back and stumbling onto Gearhead & Barracuda magazines, that I realized there was a scene that was being ignored. A scene that is considerably richer and interesting than anything coming out of the current crop of custom car builders featured on cable. I'm developing a piece that I'm calling "Rat Rod". I'm not sure if this is a stand alone film or a pilot for a series. All I know is that I want it to be true to the culture. The home builder, the no budget, the traditional rod builder. I'm self-financed and hope to shoot something over the summer. I've already spoken to Mike at Gearhead, and the folks at Rust magazine. I'm still formulating what this will be but if you'd like to contact me I'd like to talk you. For budget reasons I'll probably have to stay on the West Coast right now. -Lou cell 415-601-6744
Sounds like an interesting idea...but I'd drop the term rat rod...it's not too well liked around here. And welcome to the hamb....lots of info for ya here. Bill
Welcome from Australia Lou. Your show sounds interesting, we've currently got a weekly 1/2 hour show called "Rodders Life" now in it's second 13 week series. Good luck.
welcome to the HAMB Lou. I'm lookin' forward to checkin' it out if it gets completed. You should change the ***le to "The Real Hot Rod" or "The True Hot Rod"
Thanks for all the feedback- especially on the name. I didn't know it was such an "n" word. Nothing is cast in stone. Rat Rod seemed to have a nice ring to it, but then again so does "prison b*tch". So what gives with the term? Glad to hear that the Aussies' are doing something. -Lou
ill tell ya, if you spent a insane amount of time and money on a project and someone said it was ****ty. whould you get mad? unlike most ****ty **t **ds my car's the real deal.
it was good talking to you lou. hope you can make it to BLAZEN7 CAR SHOW. ***A TRIPLE THREAT PROGRAM PRIDE OF THE CHAMP CAR SHOW AUG.13, 2005 ANTIOCH, CA FAIRGROUNDS FEATURING LUCHA LOCAS WRESTLING , LIVE TIKI CARVING, BANDS FOOOD, VENDORS ,BEER AND MORE ALL INFO. WWW.BLAZEN7.COM
I don't care what you call it if you DO IT! I'd watch it...... Holly cow, we're going main stream.......bunch-o-sellouts!
Welcome! I think " The Hot rod life" would be kool.We are all into it here at the H.A.M.B. It's like breathing air.
I don't know man, call me paranoid.. I said it once before, I don't wan't Paris Hilton and that *** from Punk'd wearing H.A.M.B and hot rod related ****, I like it that the mainstream does not know about traditional hot-rod's. If I see, I swear it, some Hollywood actor *** wearing a HAMB, shirt I'll kill him..
Want "Real World" ****... ? Come up North and shoot a piece on frozen snot in welding helmets. The viewers love **** like that. When your wet gloves freeze to a Vise-Grip... or, when your Oxygen comes out of the torch as snow... or, if you step outside to piss, yer **** crawls right back up inside ya... That's solid gold, right there, baby! You are now watching HAMB TV.......... JOE
Alot of guys get sore around here because they consider RatRod an insult to the car, in that its ratty or a piece of ****. The rest of the world is quite content with the term RatRod, so depending on your audience call your film whatever you like. I am sure you will sell a lot better with a name like RatRod, but you will turn off the real traditionalist's. There are a lot less of the true traditionalist's than the other market so if you want to sell your film I would not worry to much about ******* us off. I personally see the RatRod thing in the same light as Orange CountyChoppers, with a little more billy Lane and a Little less Roger Bourget. You do need to get a real car though, if you are going to make a film about the HotRod Culture. We don't trust the outsiders to good.
welcome .ratrod is a bad name we work hard 4 what we have that is a ****y thing 2 call someones hard work.
Welcome...Sounds likea cool venture...keep us posted. You're at the right place for info on the culture.
Im a newby here and Ill more then likley get flammed for posting already.. but thats ok I got somthing to say... I think a film on the kulture is a dbl edged sword. Much like the choppers craze going on now. It worked out for me cause I was able to sell my bikes for more then they are worth but its bad casue buying parts for the next ones cost even more. I see the same thing happening with rod scene. just my .02 cents. -jes
This isn't some PT Barnum venture. I'm not a huckster. I'm someone who works in the media who is sick of the Von Dutching of it all. I'm not living the life but I'm a car freak who hates how Discovery is mainstreaming this. Where's the punk rock? Where are the girls? Where is the spirit? I'm an independent with no budget. I have two nearly abandoned project cars, and mouthes to feed. I will probably waste hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars trying to put something together that some suit could turn a thumbs down in a blink based on his ***istant burning his bagel that morning. If I make any $ off this I'm sure after you run the numbers it'll be a hair above minimum wage. I want to see this stuff do***ented, I want to help do***ent it. If I do make bank off of it I'll be sure to cage the hounds and let the guard buzz you in when you pop by for a visit. -Lou
In any event, WELCOME and good luck. Everybody *****es about what should be on and when someone does it, they get flamed! Stick around and enjoy.-MIKE
Welcome. Ya sound like a reasonable enough guy, good luck with your venture. Can you have Christopher Walken play my part in the movie? Seriously, I just wanted to ad that if you do a search on the main board for 'Rat Rod' you'll find a ton of ****storm posts about the use of the term. I guess it can be compared to doing a show about tuner cars and calling it "*** Wagons". If it's not used to refer to a big block car, Rat isn't exactly a term of endearment. Search if ya wanna hear more.
Welcome. Looks like you need some good reference material. You need to purchase volumes 1 and 2 of the mad fabricators. http://www.madfabricators.com/dvd.htm
