Store the original, you hopefully haven’t got much invested, build the 5 window, I expect it will be less work for more reward- 33/34’s are my favourite.
Pnb- could you share the 37 trick for the rest of us? I really like the back end, still trying to like the headlights.
Heres my take for the little its worth. Many of us would love to see the Kays Coupe completed but surely you have to build the 5W now
Pfffft; Build the 36+/- as an early racer that could be streeted, build the 34 as a decent hotrod, or early streetrod, & use it to tow the 36+/- . Problem(s) solved. Marcus...
My son always wanted a '40 Mercury coupe, bought one then for years collected parts, many which were hard to find and expensive. He eventually realized those cars are considered icons and as such can only be built in certain acceptable styles or you risk raising the ire of others and to be honest, '32 Fords suffer the same issue, so do '33-34 Fords and '40 Fords. My advice is, sell the '33-34 and use the money to build something that will always be yours, in other words, take the road less travelled.
This is easy: continue working on the car you're building and get the body complete. I think selling it at a level where someone else can finish it off would get you a decent amount of capital to work with in building the 33/34. We all know they're a hot commodity and parts are expensive. Plus, this "special" is a pretty neat project.
The five window looks like an oval track car which means it has history. I say finish your current project, restore or sell the 34 five window to vintage racer or oval track racer restorer.
Build the Model 40. Sell the other one to finance parts for said 5 window. Carry on. Once you drive a severely chopped 34 there is no turning back. I know of what I speaketh.
Let me find a pic to help me splain. Give me a minute. OK this is a ruff pic let me try you will have to let your imagination run wild here. I have seen them cut along the ridge on the fender (black arrow) which is not my favorite but it works. I like them cut along the bottom of this valley, all the way to the back of the headlight hump (red arrow). That leaves front suspension and brakes exposed. I have never done it or seen it done but if you don't care for the headlights there is no reason why you could not cut it along the yellow line. There is a valley you could follow and then blend the bottom toward the grill. Obviously you loose the boards, and rear fenders. I would think that chopping is a must and a mild channel to hide the chassis. I do not think that this mod would work high boy style. At least I have never seen it done that way. Maybe someone more talented could photo chop it for you so everyone could get a better idea. perhaps start a new thread? Now for the humor. I like the 37 headlights. If I had a set I would be gradfting them onto my wife's 40 Chevy.
I get what you're saying. I was able to sit in the famous California Kid a few days ago... wow. Now nothing but a chopped 33-34 will scratch that itch.
The Kid has inspired a few young people (and old) to build hot rods. It is a beautiful car. Look into the history of the car and the era that it was built and you will find even more inspiration.
well its always nice to see my thread get a little action! looks like im makin a deal with cactus on his model 40 frame, and the old speed coupe will live another day! Ill keep this one updated as I go for the speed coupe, and start another for the 34 soon as I make a little more progress but boy do I have some good story to go with it so far!
You do know that Tom bay in Arkansas City Kansas makes most of the really good Model 40 repair parts?!?!?!? Great guy and resource for you.
thanks Tman! I didnt know that. Ive been in contact with Don Smart and hes got a few patches in the mail to me as we speak!

Had a customer that had one of those plastic Cord's with the big block mopar. I told him he should put 37 Ford headlights in it and I'll be darned if he didn't take it to one of are local go to guys and he did a great job. Help the car a bunch, the only problem with the car for me was the color. It was that pail yellow.
