    Man, I did an internship with their HQ in '93... That place was a F'ed up big time back then. I personally heard the Head of Olds, John Rock, say that the US had been clear that the "Olive's Tooth" front end should be killed... Didn't stop them from continuing to design 'em like that though...

    Sucks...

  7. i've heard about GM pulling the plug on Olds and i just can't figure out why....since they made a real big deal about old's 100th aniveristy . i guess it's what america is starting to be about: what have you done "me" lately. no one has any respect for tradition or their elders..it's all about the bottom line and how much money they make now, who cares about the future generatons?

    Too many Divisions using the same platforms. Olds didn't have a niche...

    Chevrolet = Value
    Pontiac = Performance
    Buick = Entry Level-Luxury
    Cadillac = Luxury

    so its finally going to be over thursday.its about time.
    its been like hell waiting for it since 2000.they make us wait for over 3 years wtf?plus the send off car is a peice of shit alero!
    "We want to give Oldsmobile the send-off it deserves."
    thats funny.with the alero being showcased as there last car,and going to the museum,and such.i dont really care what there marketing stradigy was for keeping the alero for the last car.they could have done something better for a manufacture that has been around this long than a few stupid badges and trim.

    Before it became just "an old man's Olds" like in the 40's and 50s and 60's and the first half of the 70's it fit well where it was set in the group, ght between Pontiac and Buick as a "Performance-Luxury" with a more nimble suspension than a Buick and more Luxury than a Pontiac.
    They just got dowdy and they quit building large Performance Luxury coupes. That was a mistake.

    For those of you who don't own Oldsmobiles, this may be a bad thing. For those of you that do, this could be a GREAT thing. Either way, I haven't seen a decent car come out of an Olds factory in my short lifetime (1979) and GM made a business decision. Perhaps if they had grasped the nostalgia of their 442 like dodge did their hemis, it may have turned the tide. Same fate is destined for Lincoln if they don't whip their asses into shape soon. Too much competition out there and not enough innovation.

    Always a shame to lose an American icon.

    I would always assume that it went [IMG]

    1) Cadillac = Top quality/luxury
    2) Buick = performance/luxury
    3) Oldsmobile = economic/luxury
    4) Pontiac = Wannabe cadillac (hahahah!)
    5) Chevrolet = Performance/Bang for the buck

    What more can be said, other than the rat bastard bean counters have had their way again. I don't think that, in the GM line, there was a more recognizable name than Oldsmobile. The fact that the stupid asses that "run" GM couldn't think of what to do with such a venerable line, it speaks volumes of their astute business practices. And emphasizes why the Japanese and Germans have been eating their lunch for years. How the hell is it possible, let alone conceivable, to let such a wonderful part of their history slip into the past without giving the line a chance for survival. I could think of lots of ways to enhance their saleability rather than detracting from it, such as was done. A panel of Olds nuts together with a bunch of recent grads from LA's Design Center together with a bunch of dedicated builders from a place such as Wyotech could, no doubt, figure out a very satisfactory solution, I think. Freaking bunch of morons.

  22. Oldsmobile used to be a QUALITY car-up until I believe they started failing...1970 and newer.I have driven many over the yaers and had good service from their engines and drivetrains. I was never more dissapointed when my wife bought her 2000 Alero.
    you noticed I never called it an OLDS........they are done and if the quality is any indication of their future intent well- we are better off.
    I will continue to seek out the older peices that WERE GREAT!

    I love my '67 Olds 98 convertible! Oldsmobile seemed to have lost all of it's direction and appeal when GM took away the line's trademark engines. Of course, the front wheel drive econo-box/pseudo luxury junk GM put out in the mid 80's to replace the big C and B bodies really sounded Oldsmobiles death knell.
    Anyway, here's a pic of my Olds! I never really mentioned it here because it doesn't really fit in with the forum.

    Point #1 - It's hard to sell anything that you don't advertise - Oldsmobile, Camaro, Firebird, Caprice. GM doesn't promote anything but trucks and then wonders why the stuff doesn't sell. My wife has an Olds Bravada and loves it. We got it for almost nothing because nobody seems to know what they are.

    Point 2: Other companies are guilty of the same thing -Plymouth. My bet is Merc is next to go. Absolutely sucks.

    Most of us diehard Rocket folks think they died around 88 when the last rwd cutlass was produced.

    Kill Olds, keep Daewoo and Saturn? WTF is that all about?

    I expect Buick is next from GM.

    Ford hasnt killed a division off yet, my bet there is Mercury.

    Idiots. [IMG]

    (I have my 9 oldsmobiles, that's enough - the building is full)

  27. Retirees love Oldsmobiles, Oldsmobile loved the retirees.

    It was a match made in heaven, and that's were they both are now. [IMG]

    Retirees didn't like the Aurora.

    It's all about the benjamins bro. Daewoo et al are in the Oriental (read CHINA) market, which is set to EXPLODE soon. 2 billion potential customers, compared to 270 or so million here, with a buttload more choices. The bean counters don't give a fuck about nostalgia, tradition, heritage, etc. It's the bottom line that counts. Olds didn't contribute to the bottom line, and I expect Pontiac to be not so far behind... It sux too. [IMG]

    The line doesn't look much different today. (Believe me I chase the DAMN thing 8hrs a day). Cool to see the old pics from when they built cars and not tin cans.

    A decklid was sent around the plant last week so we could sign our names to it. The lid is off the LAST Oldsmobile to be built in Lansing. (or anywhere for that matter [IMG]) There is a special celebration tommorow in the plant. Most of the KIDS (most under 30) look at it as 30 minutes of the line and not the passing of one of the longest lasting names in automotive history.

    I will post some pics of the gifts we get this weekend. (a poster and some other goodies.)

    April 30th will be a day in my life that I will always remember and will tell future grandkids about. THE DAY GM KILLED RE OLDS!!!!
