All I want is a '36 Ford Coupe powered with an early Hemi. This dream is rooted in a swap meet car I saw a million years ago when I was much younger and much broker. I have the 354 Hemi. I need the Coupe. The Hemi is an Industrial from an airport tug. I've gone thru it and done all the needed conversions. Also, a Wilcap adapter and a Ford top loader from a '68 'stang. Cragar 4x2 intake and some other Hot Heads upgrades. I need to find the Coupe and am questioning my focus on 1936. What about similar years? '37, '38, '39, '40?????? There are some good looking options on the market. Most have throw-a-way small block Chevy mills....that's fine, I have no problem with recycling. Here is my question...What is the better year to make a Hemi work in. Show me your '30's Ford Coupe powered with an early Hemi. The current host of the Hemi is my '30 Dodge RPU. I
It occurs to me @kustomfordman , that y’all got it bad. In which case you’re hooked ( addicted that is)
I’m sure the engine would fit better in a 39 or 40 because of the big fenders. But if you had a 36 you could leave the hood sides off so people could see the Hemi.
Nice engine, a little jealous. The good thing is that its currently being used and isn’t on a stand pining away for a home.
I have never owned an earlier Ford. What is the differences between a '36 and '39? I know juice brakes came on in '39, but what about frame and other suspension details. I can find the cosmetic differences in headlamps, fenders, etc. but would like to get to know about best/better fitment.
Can usually find 35 Ford's easier and cheaper than 36. And if built without fenders they're essentially the same car lol
I too have the Hot Heads water pump conversion. I modified the stock front cover and kept the original water crossover manifold.
I used Hot heads lower alt mounting bracket and AC bracket but used them on top of the engine as they made contact with my motor mounts down below. Then I made a brace between the heads that both units bolt to reinforce and steady the AC and Alt. I can take a pic or two tomorrow for you if you like.
The 35-40 Ford used the same basic frame and suspension. There are year to year difference's and nuances.
Wasn't somebody making a gl*** 36 roadster body a few years ago? You might be able to build something like this
I used the short AC compressor from Sanden (505?) so it would fit in front of the head. You can see the billet Hot Head mounts under the compressor and Alt. I had to run the AC fittings straight up and used pre-bent fittings to aim them back down. You can see both brackets here. Even though they were designed for mounting under the engine they worked quite well moving them to the top. They needed additional bracing however. The AC took some spacers to align the belt that I made from bar stock, I fit it first then spaced the Alt as you can see below. I made shims for the water pump and crank pulleys last. It is not easy putting AC compressors on a Desoto hemi. You have to be creative. I was going to run an adjustable heim joint thingy but I didn't like the look and my radiator hose is in the center of the intake. Instead I built a steel brace that utilizes the singular head bolt on either side. It is a 1/8th flat steel bar that I added slotted adjusters to for both units. It is hard to make out because I powder coated it black but here is a close up. I have adjusted belts and it works well. Sorry I don't have a better picture of that brace. It is paramount in firming things up.
You will never be happy if you settle for second best rather than a 36. There are three five windows for sale up in this area if Riley at Rockets Hotrod Garage still has the one in Sunnyside. I was thinking that he sold it though. https://www.facebook.com/marketplac...wse_serp:b669080c-4a4f-431e-8eda-f4b195f70658 The Blue one that might be a needs a lot rig is in Cashmere Wa home of the Applets and Cotlets. https://www.facebook.com/marketplac...wse_serp:b669080c-4a4f-431e-8eda-f4b195f70658 The third one is a 2500 buck wonder and I am going to have to look for Ethel on the map. https://www.facebook.com/marketplac...wse_serp:b669080c-4a4f-431e-8eda-f4b195f70658 They are around , you just have to hunt them down.
I believe I have my alternator mounting figured out for the Hemi. Now just need a '37 Ford to put the Hemi in. Dang if they are not spendy. Here are photos of the final alternator mountings.
