I wonder when Chip is going to start building more traditional rods. With his talent he could build some nice cars.
I am a huge Foose fan. Love that the guy can do EVERYTHING well. He knows cars inside and out. He does respect hot rodding history. He supports the passion of the hobby. He does everything to help out everyone he can. Hell his show has saved more junk cars than most of this message board, lol. And workoholic doesn't begin to describe him. This car, however doesn't excite me at all. The wheels are too big. They steal the show from the front end - they block your view from nearly every angle. They interupt the great body lines. They just end up a big distraction, for me that is. Maybe some fenders would have pulled things together - I dunno. Besides - I always look at the parts of a car as being somehow necessary for a purpose - or a trickle down of technology from some motorsport. The oversized tires are not necessary and have little purpose (I am speaking mostly or the fronts). Sure the car will handle well and brake well - but seriously, do they have to be that big? I think not. The paper thin sidewalls and soft alum. rims are a recipe for flat tires too...wonder how many he'd get around here.... And one last gripe - this car has NO stance..... ...but I bet it hauls ass, and I'd like to give her a spin!
Hatch said it all, "not my cup but I wish I had a tenth of his talent", to throw that creation in front of us traditional minded folks will not get a great response. Chip and his father are guys who can do more than draw one up! Plus in person he is a very friendly, nice guy. My experience anyway. It won't be us knuckle busters stepping up to buy the few editions of this rig, but the checkbooks that just can! The p-32 is an example of pretty damn cool. I could carve him up on the 22's etc., but oh-well, I just respect the talent overall. Trad rules, checkbook fools! Sololobo
not my thing, but i appriciate it for the fact that this car was his thesis project in college, while all the other guys were doing ferrariesque (i just made up a word ha) sports cars he decides to do a hemi powered hot rod, for that i respect it.
I think the car has perfect stance for what it is... a modern '34-meets-Indy-car. Remember, hot rods and Indy cars once had a lot in common, and this simply moves that commonality forward a few decades. I love it in it's new CF and black paint job... The big wheels all around match the formula car feel. Foose was trained at the Art Center College of Design and has worked for the majors, so he is influenced by FUTURE design, not PAST design. He knows and understands past hot rod design, as is evidenced by his ability to pull it off spectacularly when he wants to. But he is the one pushing the future boundaries and everyone else seems to follow. That takes original thinking and that's what traditional hot rods were all about back then. Plus, his attention to detail is second to none. Build your cars your way, but we shouldn't be dissin' someone who has this much talent, even if some of the stuff he owns leaves you personally cold (and individuality is the backbone of hot rodding, isn't it? Which means it's perfectly normal for someone to build a car that not everyone likes Unlike a car that has to sell to 150,000 people or more per year, a hot rod only has to be liked by ONE person.) My own '63 Comet convertible is being built heavily influenced by his style and talent (even though I designed it's basic look long before I had heard of him).
It's not traditional, which is why it rarely gets mentioned on here. My Falcons are much more traditional, including 13" steelies and trim rings.
Well now i would not turn the car down if it were given to me. I have a great respect for his work but this i'm not feeling. I would expect this from Boyd
We need to go back to the days of the real builders like Roth and the Druid Princess. Back then the car builders gave us cars that could fly, like the Rotar, and Barris XP-something. Those were the good old days. I was there when the Beatnik Bandit was the rod of the future.(HaHa) Foose will demand my respect for his talent on any given day. He is living the life and reaping the rewards for his talent. More power to him.
it is what i call a cartoon car. looks nothing like a real car or a hot rod at that. it is right up there with the coast to coast wild rods and rats glass cars.
Looks like a prowler sans bumbers to me. I'd sell it and get something else, but it is not completely heinous.
I think it's pretty great. Are there things I would have done differently? Sure, but at the end of the day, Chip is a great talent, and everything I've ever heard about the guy says he's a genuine sweetheart. Long live the Foose.
Met him at Sema in 04, and have to agree he is a genuine and decent guy. Boyd was not. He was quite the opposite. Hulk Hogan was pretty nice too.
Context Context Context... If you expected a modern limited production car to look like a Hot Rod Model A, I'm sure you were deeply dissappointed... This car has to be compared in CONTEXT with cars that have a similar background... If FOOSE wanted to build a Pure Traditional Hot Rod, I'm pretty sure he could blow us all away (meaning impress us... don't get butt-hurt thinking you're a better builder).... This car needs to be considered WITH the Prowler, the Boydster, and maybe something else with limited production numbers etc... To me it looks way better than any of those cars... I might even choose it over a new Corvette or Viper... Maybe even over the Ford GT40... I might even choose to drive it more than my Period 31 Roadster... But I wouldn't buy it INSTEAD of my Roadster, because my first love is traditional Hot Rods... APPLES AND ORANGES...
If I could afford one , I would want it All black with green tint windows. I would have lost the grille , and rather given it a track style nose ,then a pair of E&J style headlights , maybe an "aero-inspired" styled nerf bar up front & a set of unpolished (satin light shade of gold colored ) KO halibrand "kidney-bean" style of wheels ... Then a brown leather interior & an early sixties style corvette steering wheel ... I sure could live with that Imho :The foose car has a very nicely designed body, But the grille looks out of place ( underbit ), and the color & wheels make it look like something out of a Japanese (npi) cartoon rather than a modern version of the all american Hot Rod .. Klaz
Except for a few detail changes, it's cool! Fenderless - check Bubbletop - check Hemi w/ injector stacks - check chrome suspension - check Somebody get me some decent pics, That thing is a simple Photochop (mostly wheels and tires, paint, mirrors and seats*) away from being a HAMBSplooge-worthy handbuilt 60's show rod. You know somebody will do it with one of it's 50 brothers. * Should be a 4 hour job on Overhaulin' in real life.
Chip is a HUGE talent and the little bit I've got to talk w/ him, he seems to be a genuine and approachable guy... that being said, pass me on this one...I guess that part of my brain didn't develop....
Broman, This is so true, I have had the opportunity to work on one of the same projects that Foose is working with. Believe it or not it's an architectural project. (OT/ check out the Detroit Motor City Casino Project)His talents go way beyond automotive and he is just a plain genious designer. out
Richard D I was not complaining about the " Japs " as you say but comparing the two cars. If ya don't like the thread don't read it. Pretty simple
