just talked to vern about those a month ago!-i had thought previously that they were a ford item til he told me...
No doubt, that polished case will exude some positive energy! But as usual, the tiny details of what goes on inside of that case, can be complicated, but then again you are fully aware of that! Be safe out there as you fly through the sky!
That price is crazy! IMO However having a machine shop make one would be costly also, maybe cheaper but not a lot I’ll bet. Dan
I think in my head the options for machine shop are less commercial shop and more one of my dozen friends who have a lathe and a mill. Or the extreme opposite, you make it a file and send it to send cut send and you’ll have one in moments with the capability to have a dozen more if needed. they (send cut send) are also setting up a marketplace so if you make a little bracket or part and want to offer it for sale the public can then order it and they make and send it. Very similar to print on demand publishing
Will Send Cut Send have a dividing head, correct cutter and a mill to cut the splines on the OD of the drive spud and a broach to spline the ID of that collar? Is that drive also heat treated? It’s a small part but not every back yard machinist has what’s needed to produce it.
Good catch on the splines! I clearly didn’t look close enough. But yes I think they may actually offer all of that. I think hunting an original is probably the most cost effective route, but most will probably just suck it up and pay speedway. Thinking about all the heat treat etc I bet the machine shop in Kansas City that we stopped at the last time you were in town @Ryan could knock it out. They do gears/ splines etc all day
Looking objectively at the whole scene… what that thing actually is, the number of operations needed to make it correctly, and the extremely low demand for such a part I’d say you’re lucky to find *anyone* producing them. And even more lucky to only be paying 300 and change for one. But that’s only my mood this moment—could change within hours
Gotta agree, that’s a very complex part with a bunch of processes for a very very niche market. I guess sometimes you just gotta suck it up unless you want to invest in a batch run and recoup your costs by selling the rest.
Are the splines a standard size? Would the collar be readily available, maybe longer needing cut to length? The external splines are much easier for a regular guy to cut on his mill. Then weld the head on it and mill the offset tangs. See? A backyard guy could have it done before lunch.
