Been machining for 53 years, but that mill is unfamiliar. Not often X axis ways extend beyond table, except on a jig bore. Make?

It was a Moog NC hydraulic Mill it its first life. I got it for scrap price where I worked years ago. I put lead screws on it stead of hydraulic. It is a Bridge Port mostly.

You've obviously put a lot of thought into this George.[IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

Is the bottom end up to using what this head will flow ?

Is the bottom end up to it, you never know with a Model A crank they like to break at number 4 rod journal. It is the best it can be, counter weighted, balanced, inserts pressure oiling, 283 chev pistons, home built alum rods. Crankshaft 5 mains hum maybe some day if I have enough time left.

Hey George.... I have the utmost respect for guys like you. I had the privledge of watching a guy in Twinsburg Ohio cast a complete SOHC motor, for his race car. It took him 3 years. When I heard he was doing it, I honestly didnt believe it, but this guy is die hard Ford, and he did it. He raced it in the Texas Outlaw Class... and the sad fact is, the rods he used were supposed to be good for 3000 passes, and 1 rod let go on the 1946 pass, and sent the whole engine to the scrap yard.

I hope you post the running engine on youtube, I would love to hear it run...

They are good but this is a hill climb car it needs lots of power. It will be replacing my 455 olds head Model A engine.

Put in spring pockets, and put in one valve to see how it fits. Its starting to come together.

It would be interesting to put this one on a flow bench,
and compare the numbers to a regular sbc head.

I wasn't aware that a stock 235 head was a cross flow. I was talking about a Wayne type head.

    I want one BAD!!

Put the head on the engine I'm going to use for now, while waiting for some parts. She is going to breathe like a big sled dog.

    George,
Explain how you modified the block for 4 intake ports?

Pictures of that process would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks for keeping us updated!!!!!

Do not have any pictures. Plugged the old ports, then bored new ones strait in to the valves. Of course they go through the water jacket, so you have to put sleeves in.
This engine runs very strong, so I will use it for the over head for now. Then later on I want to build a different block for my new head.

Well the head is almost done, waiting on some O rings so I can put the two halves together. Then put in the valve guides and valve seats, plus the studs for the rocker arms. But I need to mount it on the block to get it in the correct place.
I will post a picture when that is done, Will need a head gasket to get the push rod length.

My plan is to check the head for leaks in the morning. Then put in the car and make headers. If all that goes well start it for the first time.It will be a couple of days.

Good going George. From the way some of the posts have been going lately, I'm surprised someone hasn't given you hell for screwing up huge hunks of virgin aluminum.

I was impressed with your Olds head and then with your new aluminium head, but build a different block...... What can be said, other than awsome...

    Thanks for all your posts....

Can't wait to hear it on youtube in a couple of days.....

This post reminds me of a fellow 82 years young over near Syracuse N.Y. who made his own heads for a 425 Nailhead which he ran on a super modified, injected on alcohol at the track in Oswege N.Y. back in the 60's... The heads were made of plate steel welded up with an old buzz box using 312 Y-block rockers... It was an awsome piece which he recently acquired after a hot rodder/drag racer blew the motor up down in Flordia..... However; the rodder destroyed the gear drive which was made.... Gear drives where not manufactured for naiheads....

    George you are writting history.....

Well I started the engine today. If you look close you can see the smoke coming off the headers. It sound good, but there is a little rain today, so I left it in side.

Man, that velocity stack on the carb looks like it came off an old cuspidor!! You could do a valve job just reaching into that thing-

    Great Job George!

  29. Great news, it runs,,,,Just wonderin', do you plan to use a support strut for the manifold?

you made a head, and did a mighty fine job I might say, so...
when are you going to make a block for it? Seriously, I'm not being a smart a$$ here, if you have this kind of skill, I don't doubt you a bit.

Oh, an while you're at it you wanna make me a 24 valve ohv (not OHC) direct mechanical injection, cross flow head for my 292 Chevy inline six? I think Kirby/Sissel may have a HUGE competitor if you do just that...
