Sad but true. Worked over 20 years, mostly at dealerships. Now I work online and provide advice to people to fix their cars. It is amazing how many people expect that you can perfectly diagnose their car for them through the computer when they don't even own a test light or any other tools to diagnose or repair the car themselves.

Twenty years working on new cars and yes i have seen this many times."emission service 25 dollars".Dr soenso brings his early olds for a tune up and emission serv and decides to watch. While adjusting the idle mixture he asks what are you doing? The emission service i said. he says I am paying 25 dollars to turn two screws?
No,your paying five dollars to have turn two screws turned, your paying me twenty to know when to stop turning them.

Working in a shop all week helping a friend.
    So true.
Like the kid with the 200K mi TT turbo. Jap MAF. Wood screws holding it together. No sensors plugged in, no money, angry dad saying "i used to work at a dealership" and "whataya mean, you're telling me you WON'T work on my kid's car".... And the priceless look when my friend says "10K miles ago I told you it needed a MAF, you took it someplace and put on the cheap Japanese one --- now its throwing 6 codes and all the sensors are unplugged, who did THAT?"

I worked at a shop years ago, where a angry customer came in complaining that one of the guys had looked at his exhaust, and now it was leaking.

One of the owners of the shop told him,
" Cool... Next time I'll let him look at something more expensive."

Oh this is priceless! The customer sounds like a government contracting agent I recently had to deal with. Wanted a one year warranty on stuff totally unrelated to the work we quoted. My boss had a real good way of telling him to go screw himself. Haven't heard from the idiot since. You made my day.

I try to read every new customer to see if they are gonna be unreasonable. The first bad sign is they will start slamming other local shops. I don't talk down other shops even if they may deserve it. I love the looks I get when I reply to the "Customer is always right" with "NO, the customer is NOT always right!" peace

Man, this happens all too often. Somone needs to make one for the people who don't pay and the ones whom want everything done for free.

Idiot customers aren't limited to auto shop, or other retail types of business. I operate a business that deals only with industrial customers. When dealing with the general public most don't know what it takes to accomplish the work you're providing, in my line work all of my customers are in the same business that I am in and know the costs and time it takes to complete a project. Almost every one expects you to do their jobs with no mark up, at minimum wage and want it done yesterday. They wait until two days before their ship date to call me in to do my work, which should take a minimum of a week to do it correctly. I work long hours to complete the jobs, sometimes literally 24 hours straight then they bitch when I send them a bill with overtime hours. They also bitch when the job gets on site and there are few mistakes, even though they don't give me time to check the job over before shipping. Many times we are literally finishing the job as they're loading it up to ship.

It is very accurate. I never got to the point of saying the things the mechanic said, but I should have. Retired mechanic and former U-Haul dealer.
