I was just looking at muttley's water slide thread and was kinda drawn in by the old moon decal with the red T on it. Now I've seen this one umpteen times but had never really put any thought to it. Was it a real car or gust someting or dean's logo? If it is/was real does any one have any pics or details on it?
That car was owned by Creighton Hunter , who along with C.J.Hart and Frank Stillwell started the Santa Ana Drag Strip in the early 50's . The first weekly drag strip in the country . Dean moon liked the way that Creighton had painted "eyes" in the double zeros , and used that for the "inspiration" behind the Mooneyes logo that we know today. Creighton p***ed several years back , after a full life in and around hotrods .
What year in the '50's did Santa Anna open ??,,I was there in '57 & again in '59 when my folks went to So Cal on vacation from Iowa ,,
Thanks ,,when we went out to So Cal in '57 ,,I got to go to the then brand new ,DisneyLand,,the Rose Bowl Parade & football game ( Iowa vs Cal ) ,,,saw all the Kustom & Hot Rod Shops ,,but had the most fun at the Santa Anna Drags,,it was a great time for a 15 year old hick from the corn country,,
Not too much to research. Just pickup a copy of Hop Up #8 and turn to page 80. It's also been in almost all of the Don Montgomery books at one time or another, and never to far out of the public eye all it's life. It was still making the rounds of the nostalgia drags in the late ninties, and since the p***ing of both Hill and Tony Acala, it has belonged to Julian Alvarez.
