Anyone picked up the new CK Deluxe? I got it yesterday and let me just say save your money. It is nothing but "Ol Skool Rodz" in a new wrapper. And that mag was garbage also. Just my opinion. Ok that is all I have to say, I just haven't been on here since the Jockey Journal started and that is all I have to say.
I actually thought it was pretty decent. Not the best, but I say pretty good in my book. I wont knock anyones work unless I can go out and prove I can do it better. (plus I suscribed to it at a show long before the first issue came out so it better be good)
JK that is your fault!! And compared to the old CK it just seemed a bit week. I was comparing the old to the new. If you do the same then you will agree.
There is NO comparison between the old and the new! At the very least, complete sentences grace the new and there are real words used, not something made up, also the correct spellings of English words are used and the pictures actually are in the correct article they were shot for and they have captions. I dunno ASM, I think you're comparison pales. R-
Maybe it just felt different... and the fact that it rang up as "OL SKOOL RODZ" on the self check out screen kinda just made me cringe. I hated that mag. But what do I know I still pay almost $10 for some Brit mag called "Cl***ic Motorcycle", ehh whatever.
Reminds me of something a good friend once told me. When ya run a magazine you have a choice: "Hire car guys and teach them how to write or hire writers and teach them about cars. You aren't going to find someone with impeccable tastes on both sides of that line." In the end, who really buys a car magazine to read the features anyway? Come to think of it, who buys those magazines in the first place?
So, what youre saying is there are a ton of people out there that are simply wasting their time being editors, writers, contributors and ***orted hangers-on? From what little Ive gathered about OSR and CKDs circulation, about (notice I do not quote specific numbers) a quarter of a million people buy OSR and CKD thats who gets those two, notwithstanding the circulation of all the mags Primedia puts out and Buckaroo pubs counts they are a**** the most prolific. Now I cannot speak to the fact that those people are buying it to read the feature articles or simply looking at pictures but I find it extremely interesting that youve lumped your two most favorite magazines (Rodders Journal and Mag-neto) into this who-buys-those-magazines-anyway thot... Print is certainly not dead yet! I dont think its even close to old-aged. R-
i think the new mag is not all that bad. when you think about it, you spend $4 on something to read, look at, and enjoy. The rag ain't pulitzer prize stuff, it is "lookey 'ere" glossy. I like the way the mag is presented (the b/w "newspaper" style center, etc.) Though "Garage" is the best hands down. then it would be a personal preference from there on down with all the remaining rags out there. Locally there is a newspaper called "RUST" that is really well done, they had a great feature on Blue Collar Customs a while back that rocked. I am afraid that some of these mags are going to have to die soon, but for now, it looks like there is going to be quite the plethora to choose from. So read the ones that you can get hold of.
The circulation of both those magazines together is under 30k, but that's not really the point. The functionality of "the magazine" has changed in the last 5 to 10 years for me. If I want to read about hot rods and customs, I do it on the internet - the quality of writing is about the same, but the content is more relevant to my needs and it's fresh. Why wait 3 months for one of these low budget zines to cover the HRR with ****ty captions when I can get on the internet and see real time coverage with a more personal feel? That said, I don't think print is dead entirely. These days, print has to be a tactile experience or I just lose interest. What's a tactile experience? Rodder's Journal, Hop Up, and yeah - I would say the Magneto I just got was very tactile. It's all about quality, attention to detail, p***ion, design, etc... The quality of paper is REALLY important as well as the size and the binder... One thing they all have in common? Very little if any advertising, very focused, and relatively expensive. None of them are perfect literary examples... They don't have to be. Primedia? You don't want me to go there. I do way too often... Garage? That's not a car magazine. That's a VERY well done lifestyle magazine (the last issue was incredible)... with a great ****ing logo...
you are correct, it is not really a car mag, but it is written very well. the spreads are awesome and the stories are very well done. any one still read carcraft/ hotrod?
what ryan said rings true.... id rather read something a car guy wrote that knows what hes talking about than read about , stromberg 94s, " deuce model A's" or "modifieds "that are really roadsters ... old skool rods and mags that are similliar just go after beat up black primer , red wheels and tatoo's ....THEY WOULD NOT KNOW A DEAD-ON PERIOD CORRECT CAR IF IT FELL ON THEIR HEADS!!!!!!!! yes i would rather read poor punctuation with quality cars and good photos than about some piece of **** with the paragraph spell checked the first couple of issues of ol skool rods, the old ck deluxe showed promise but quickly went down hill rolls and pleates, hop-up and magneto are the only rags i bother with
Did anyone notice how cool Hot Rods' latest issue is? It has a 'lil of everything that I'm into. Very cool. Rodders Journal is a high end coffee table book you can by everytime it comes out for pennies compared to it's content and quality. A must have! Garage is the freshest, most interesting mag I've ever seen. I love it, it talks to this 50 year old "Rebel without a Pause". OSR and CKD, well ya know with all it's warts and pimples, at the end of the day, they seem to be having a helluva goodtime compared to me. Let 'em do their thing. I appreciate this site allowing me to express my opinions. Joel
I still read Hot Rod because though my p***ion is for traditional stuff, I still like to see what's going on in the world of speed and how to apply some new school trick to some old school stuff. I found out about Rhoads lifters though Hot Rod, definitely not something you'll find an article on in Rod and Custom, yet it's still relevant.
Yea hot rod and car craft have some good cheapo budget engine building tips and hot rod is like a buck an issue. The only thing ive learned from osr is what not to do.
OSR lost me with the very first issue. (the last I bougt, but not read) I think it is hilarious that they **** on about 80 percent of the cars out there then bring you a 4 page article about some kids 60 4 door biscayne with a blower type air scoop through the hood. the new C.K. did the same thing with thier "approved t-shirt slogan"...just the part about "power parking"(I.E. parking as a club near the entrance) and no blacktop parking...god forbid we park a car on blacktop. anything but that. I will stick with GARAGE (If I had a million dollars, those guys would be monthly in about 30 minutes...) hot rod (I am pretty sure its how I learned to read, and on the subject of editors, Freiburger does hr AND Car craft at the same time and until recently, BY HIMSELF.)and the journal because it makes me feel sophisticated with its nice thick pages and hard back and all (oh those articles about the cars and builders are nice, too) There is a Dark horse on the horizon, though...a shop buddy came in with a new rag called somethin' like "Chrome and Speed" or something like that. I read it, really liked it (nice mix of old race cars and customs with some new stuff thrown in. by new stuff I mean muscle)Then Outlaw promptly dissappeared the damn thing. I can't even call it by its real name, but it was much more readable than the 'zines in question. I guess my point is don't tell me what to like, or I will surely hate it.
I can't say enough about Hot Rod Magazine... It is the best it has ever been. About a year ago, David Frieburger got the go-ahead to fix the magazine and it has been OUTSTANDING ever since. Not every page is gonna be flat black and red wheels, but if you open your mind a bit, you will love it. -Abone.
Ahhh, the regular magazine ***** session...... Here's a SUGGESTION for the WHINERS: you've paid money for that mag, right? Then EMAIL or PHONE the makers and ***** to them. I'm a DEALER for most of the independent mags and when I've got a problem with mag content/layout/bad fonts (yes, it STILL happens) I contact the MAKERS.....I don't ***** on here. Let the people that ENJOY the mags get out of them what they will. ****ing drama queens... Is there a TAMPON forum where you get on and complain about the product you just bought 'cos it irritates your ******? There should be....go find it.
you might be referring to Speed and Chrome, a fun little magazine they produce in Modesto, Ca. I really enjoy the articles and photos in S&C, all color photographs and their editing and spelling have vastly improved over the first two issues. a good one to read.
hey i got it, and it wasnt blow my ****ing skirt up bad ***, but when the **** is a magazine really bad *** anyways? i rarely "read" magazines, but i buy them ALL. its great reference for your customers, and when you personally start a new project you can bounce through old mags, and flip through pics for inspirations. a magazine is a magazine. i think they have done a good job on the new ck mag, and i dont think it looks anything like OSR. and anyways, them are like the 2 out of the only 4 or 5 magazines that will take pictures of our PIECES OF ****S right?....lol...c'mon sillymick,..lighten the **** up! if you can build a better magazine.............DO IT
Pedro, sorry man... Didn't mean to bother you. I guess you will be picking up the server bills from now on too? Perfect. GRSMNKY, how bout that ad? Do you know why it's there or are you leading on to something? The HAMB isn't for sale.
You missed my point Ryan. Seems every damn month someone is knocking the hell out of the independent mags. If they are a paying customer and they don't like something, complain to the MAG....or their dealer. Would you be real happy if someone you did work for was ragging on your design work on a forum?? That's what I'm getting at. I'll shut up now.
GRSMNKY, how bout that ad? Do you know why it's there or are you leading on to something? The HAMB isn't for sale.[/QUOTE] i was actually surprised to see a "hamb" ad in the magazine, i thought to myself ," if he advertises, that means more people come on the hamb, wich means server upgrade= more money out of ryans pocket" but i was pretty neat to see one though, i cut it out and framed it!...lol i just figured it may be the only one i ever see....lol.. i thought it was cool. btw, its not for sale? cuz i got the devil sittin here next to me, and he said he'd looooove to strike a deal!...lol...good times buh buy then....
No, I didn't miss your point. Loud and clear man. --- I obviously have pretty strong feelings about the magazine industry. And sometimes I let them get the best of me - maybe I shouldn't have let this thread go... but I did, so... It is what it is...
