If you want weird visit Cuba. All of the old American cars on the road are a mixture of what's available and local ability. I saw a '50 ford body on a Soviet truck frame powered by a Studebaker flathead six. They have backyard foundries turning out water pump castings and such. Totally bizzare stuff running around.

That's fascinating. I'm very much interested in the socio-econo-technological implications of the Cuban situation, what can be done when access to the mainstream industrial world is severed. It seems to support what I've been saying about the conventional wisdom on economies of scale, etc. One can only wonder what might have happened under a regime more actively supportive of individual creativity.

When I was stationed at Tinker AFB, OK. I always went to the yearly nationals there. All the old stuff was there and I would meet up with Brizio and such. One year I was walking thru and I saw a bunch of guys standing near this TR6 Triumph. I was like "What the hell are they looking at that for". So being curious I walk up and low and behold sitting in the engine bay is a 427 Chevy, ROFL. Crap now I know why they were looking at it, watch out Cobra

I'm not sure you would call this weird or not, I call it totally awesome.

Jay Eitel, a retired GM (I think) engineer put a jag V12 into a Corvair.

This has to be without a doubt the absolute best conversion I have ever seen done.

The workmanship and everything was flawless and done the way an OEM manufacturer would have done the car, maybe even better.

    Check it out.

  7. A friend in highschool had a 1964 TR4 with a 289 in it. It was all over the show when it got loose.

Another friend of ours had one of the TR8's. That was serious good fun. For some reason it ate driveshafts.

In 1962 I did an engine swap on a buddy's car, and seeing that, his Dad asked if I could do something about his work truck. He had about a '50 Studebaker pickup with a bad flathead 6 and a '48 Chevy sedan that ran well, but he didn't drive it. So, I swapped the 216 Chev 6 into the Stude pickup, using the Stude transmission adapted to the Chev bellhousing, fabricated a front mount and made the other necessary changes for clutch linkage, cooling, exhaust etc. Worked great, got him going again and was dirt cheap!!

I have seen alot of oddball stuff over the years. There used to be a shoebox nova with 2 4.3 liter v-6's stuffed in it, he used a Jag v-12 distributor for it. A shop I worked at had a late 70's Chevy ramp/tow truck with a 455 Buick. I just recently helped some family put a 3.2 liter Acura v-6 in the back of a baja bug.

He showed the car to me and it is beyond belief. He also split the exhaust side for side so that when you are standing next to it is sounds like a six cylinder should. An unreal car.

Each rear tyre is over 300mm (12") wide and the car has a tube chassis/rollcage. I built the car when I was 20 years old and drive it regularly on the road surprising many supposedly fast cars and motor bikes. I built the car in our small single garage with basic hand tools ( hacksaw, files, angle grinder, etc.) and towards the end of the project I had the use of a MIG welder. A TIG welder was hired to weld the chassis. I carried out all the work myself except some of the machining, paint and wiring. The following pages show the design, build and driving of the car.[/FONT]

How about this? Copied from the Beardmore Brothers web site, well worth a look includes detailed build up of the Reliant and several updated Morris 1000 cars

The build up of the minor racer is something else, showing what hard work and ingenuity can achieve on a very tight budget.

I had a 427 Ford powered 57 Corvette. Bonneville is the home of the real oddballs, Rich Fox -turbo GMC 6 powered Vega, Packard V8 powered same Vega, Doug Grieves straight 8 turbo Buick powered 85 Jaguar sedan. Ford F250 with 8-71 {I think} Detroit Diesel, Flathead powered Monza, you can go on & on. Almost forgot a Mazda rotary powered Crosley station wagon seen at the 85 Streetrod natls in Minneasota. Got my ass waxed in my 427 57 Ford by a 215 turbo Olds on an MG miget in a street race. Welcome to the world of turbos and that was in 1965

One I'd forgotten about: the cops in Zimbabwe used to run Peugeot 404s with Mopar 225 sixes in them. The engine would have been the 2bbl, 160bhp RG Export. The Peugeot was tough as nails, handled quite respectably for a ifs/live axle chassis, and looked like this:

I suppose understeer was more marked with the weight of the slant-six, though.

    I put a 318 Mopar in a 66 Volvo,stretched front 16 inches to make it work. Then built a plywood replica of a C cab p/u with same combo. 394 Olds in a 48 ford wrecker.500 500 Caddy in an 86 Ford 3/4ton 383 Chrysler in a 66 Ford Econoline

  28. During the first mideast fuel crisis in the mid 1970's I had a customer come into my dealership that was putting a 250 Chevy 6 into a early 70's Vette. Motor mount shopping at the time.

He came back a couple of months later looking for some 6 cylinder fender nameplates for it.......

And I always thought my 383 Mopar/ 54 BelAir combo was strange.

A freind has a 1916 Patterson (Buick) double tub with a Mazda B100 for power or lack there of. Another put 348 in his 58 fuelie and a 409 in his 34 Plymouth. Dad had a 409 in his NAPCO 58 GMC suburban, still has one in his 49 Flxible coach and put a hot Pinto in place of a dead Lotus Cortina ohc but that's a bolt in. I also met a guy with a Dastun pickup packing a blown 392.

    Not that wild but I've had, a 289 Ford Jamacain tiger, 460 Ford - 67 Econoline, 455 Buick-59 F100,front engine 355 sbc - 66 Corvair, a 371 Olds - 57 beetle, currently 289 in a 56

Back in the mid 80s a friend of mine was buying Triumph tr7's with bad engines. They were everywhere, He put 4cyl Pinto engines in them. eventually he put complete Pinto running gear in them. At the time I thought he was wasting his time but he sold every one he built! peace
