Bump

Just got my 1936 Coupe Chopped 3in.
Added a 1946 Ford bumper and Chevy license guard.
Also Desoto Taillights.

 

Looks fantastic- perfect chop!

 

My 1st car was a '35 5W I bought from a Uncle for $17.50 in 1958. He got it from a neighborhood widow and drove it for a week and sold it to me. My buddies and I had a grand time tearing it apart and putting it back together. I owned it for 2 years and sold it to a friend. Even back in the '50s I really wanted a 3W.

 

Hard to pull off a 3" chop on a 5w, but have to agree, the proportions look great! (Same w/ the
other "early custom" additions!)

Hello, little while back, we started on a 3W Coupe.
It started life as a 35’
We are building it as a 36’.
Would like to keep the original style Roof Insert.
BUT, there is a problem.
It’s seems that Ford back in the 35/36 day, welded 4 roof sections together.
Then there was a metal channel attached to roof opening to hold the Tack Strip, and the opening for the Vinyl roof locking material to fit into.
Well, that Channel is missing on our 3W. On ours there seems to be a series of screw hole that held the channel in.
I found a diagram online that shows the screws .
But I went and looked at another Coupe and a Sedan , where it appears the Channel was welded in.
You guys have any experience with this missing Channel ?

 

This is a Guess. If looking at the Ford diagram, if one was installing a Metal or Aluminum insert.
Probably have to cut out the Channel. To get new material low enough to mate up with original roof opening ?

 

no , I put a metal insert in and retained original channel and its a great fit

 

Wandi, did you but weld your metal insert in flush with roof ?

I thought I posted this, but it seems to have vanished.
My '36 5W, 8BA, 4 inch Merc crank, Columbia, 3.54 rear, '37 steering box, Hydraulics, runs great, but my knees are giving out. Some day I may have to consider a small block and auto trans. Anyone have suggestions where I dont cut the firewall or frame? I was wondering about a Buick V6.

 

There is a picture on the site where someone shared pics where they installed a SBC with 200R and only did a minimal frame mod for the transmission pan clearance. It inspired me to buy a newly rebuilt 200R which is still sitting on the shelf. I think there were sizing templates as well of each GM trans type. Made those using cardboard as well.

 

If you mock up well you can easily get an SBC w/auto in without hacking the firewall, anyone who claims otherwise is just too lazy to work it out. You do have to use a small profile distributor, either early model or aftermarket, no factory HEI, and the early, short water pump. And you can do it with a mechanical fan and shroud. Below is a pic of my '36 roadster (not quite HAMB style, but useful to show the point). You can also fit an SBF, but you've got to jump through a bunch of hoops to get a shorter water pump and fit a rear sump pan/oil pickup.

 

Excellent point on the on using the small distributor.

I have 2 rear wheels like yours - what brand are your fronts?

 

Mine were made by Dave Mehelich out of Wenatchee, Wa. years ago. He later sold the tooling to another company who then did the same so it's hard to tell now which company unless there are some markings on the back.

Bringing this back up. Had a buddy add a Lasalle Grille to my coupe. I’m going to go above and beyond on this thing. After the grille was made, I bought these 37-39 Buick headlights and they’re being added as I type. There are more things that are going to get done, I hope it all looks great. I will post as I go. I may do a separate post

Sorry for the very slow reply, when l welded it in l did retain the seal chanel and l do run a seal to keep the old school look . So that rubber seal may hide the fact that that the welded in insert sits a fraction higher than the outer roof panel
