Had a ton of pickups but I keep going back to these Chevys / they look like a huvercraft when lowered & raked properly. Still affordable and somewhat usable.

Here are a couple of pics of my '65. It's been a faithful daily driver for 18 years this coming April. had it down to a bare frame in '91. I've just started the freshening up process again. This time it'll be finished... Black, most likley the same basic flame layout, Probably black wheels with trim rings and small caps. I had to put the bed back on to store it in one piece for a couple months while I finish some other work. then it's back apart ....

I love this thread. Brings back so many memories. I feel a rambling post coming on.

I miss my 66. Haven't seen it in person since I got a digital camera. There are 'traditional' pics of it in a box somewhere. Actually, I think I've only seen it once since there was a www... It's rusting in peace behind a barn in Kansas. I have no pix, but a good story :)
It was my first car - bought when I was 13. Mom wrecked her truck or something, and we were looking for a truck to borrow to haul hay the next weekend. I was cutting grass in town, saving up for a stereo, and it was in the yard next door with '$300 runs' in the window. Dude let me test drive it (without even riding along - ahhh the good old days when people could trust each other). I stopped at the ATM on my way back and counted out $260ish in cash (the 200 my ATM would let me have + my grass cutting money for the day + whatever was in my wallet when I left the house) and drove it home. Mom was pissed. She got in it to drive it back to town and make the guy give my money back, and when she slammed the door, the driver's window shattered. It still doesn't have a driver' window. It had 6k miles on the odometer, and impeccable maintenance records to over 280k miles, no record of internal engine work. When I parked it 3 years later it had 36k miles on the odometer before that had quit working. It was 25 degrees with winds gusting to over 60 MPH, and a windchill of -35. When I started it, it didn't want to run, and I discovered the choke cable had failed (humidity + freezing + numb fingers I guess). I held the choke closed with a screwdriver, started it, and let it warm up. Pulled the screwdriver, grabbed teh throttle arm and pulled. Fire shot out betweent he head and exhaust manifold. Let go and jumped back, fire shot out of the carb. Drove it from Wichita to Emporia on the turnpike (-35 windchill and no driver's window, remmeber), then another 30ish miles to the 'new' section where there was a safe place to park it (we didn't have that section when I lived on the farm). Went through 2 big (2 Qt) jugs of brake fluid and a whole case of 20-50 on that trip. Put it up on blocks so as to not ruin the tires. Somewhere along the line, the hay wagon needed tires, and now my truck has no wheels or tires :) And a horse crushed the driver's mirror.
Knowing what I know now, I'm thinking that ol truck was in such bad shape as to not be drivable. It was a rusty pile o crap back then, the only thing mechanically sound was the 4 speed and rear end. The factory radio delete plate still worked tho. The cab got hit on the right side, and because of the rust, there is a visible crease in the center of the back wall of the cab. It it a small post with the little yellow diamond on top in the median, sliding sideways. At least I didn't rear end the Blazer in front of me (going 60) when he came to an abrupt stop with no brake lights due to a drunk driver crossing the median. That was before the speedo / odo broke, probably put 20k or more miles on it after that. It took 2 people to get the passenger's door opened and closed after that, and sometimes if you didn't do it right it would open itself during hard cornering. Even knowing what a pile it is, I still have visions of dragging it down here and putting it back on the road. Maybe if I find a decent body donor here in the SW, I'll look into draging it this way. In the mean time, I've settled for a '68 Ford like my late wife's first car for hauling duties.
Yeah, I'm a sentimental old fool.
Thanks for bringing back lots of memories of my wild and misguided youth :) I had a lot of adventures in that truck, including my first date, first time I went 'parking', first race, first race I won, first wreck, first tuneup and oil change without any family members helping, first electrical nightmare successfuly sorted, first radio install ( a slick Rube Goldberg tape deck add on, but with no head unit to run it through :)
First speeding ticket (after the speedo broke) and first intentional (like an accident, but not - 4 jocks blocked me into my parking spot and wanted to kick my but over some girl - never block in a beat up old farm truck with your 2 week old sports car your rich daddy bought you for your birthday ... )
I raised a lot of Hell in that truck, and somehow lived to tell about it.
Now I'm all thinking about reviving it again - see what you guys do to me?
I better get out into the garage before I get any hairbrained ideas about road trips with trailers... I don't think the Ford would make it to Kansas and back. After all, it is a Ford.

Off topic but what is the distance aprox of the frame where the truck arms attach to the crossmember? In other words how long is the crossmember?

My old 63 GMC... I miss that truck.... I traded it to a guy in Northern Indiana for a Camaro. Wish I would of kept it. If anyone has seee an old Jimmy with a JP symbol branded in the corner of the bed let send me a PM and let me know how the old Girl is doing.

Have to add my "favorite" toy.

It's rusty, rattles, charges at times, runs sometime, heat won't shut off 'cept in winter, sound system-what radio(just fills a hole in the dash), leaks, front recently got lowered when a spring collapsed(cut the other one to match),......it's a perfect beater!

woudn't trade for a new truck, luv this thing!

    Dave

I love this truck. It is great that the outside has the kind of unfinished look of primer yet the inside bed has that mirror finish. Great work WAY cool ride.

  23. While I like the red oxide, its gonna look 100 times better shiney black.
all it will need then is an anodized grille and chrome bumpers to be perfect. ;)

Can't wait to see the finished product.

I notice a few of you have gotten rid of the tailgate chains. Im assuming you di so with the kit some places sell with tailgate arms etc. My question is how do you release the tailgate now?

  26. When you cut the floor out, you don't need to open the tailgate.
    You cant haul anything. ;)
