Nice. You brought that truck back from the dead! It looks great.

  5. No, the angles and geometry are the same.
The steering box and drag link are different on the 60-66 and the 67-81.
Mounting points for upper control arms are different between the earlier trucks and later. Wider spread on the bolts. That's why I usaully just swap the crossmember.
I need to get with brad and compare some parts.
I'd like to convert the later arms to Torsion bars for grins and giggles.
    Heck, it's just metal.
Maybe we should go through the tech section or at least start this as a new thread.
    Loving the pics
    Great resource.

  8. My dad lives in Ironton,Oh.He has 4 of these trucks. One 1/2 ton wrecker that runs,a LWB stepside that probably would run and is in ok shape,a custom cab fleet side rough but has perfect chrome, and a cab or two.I wish someone would go buy them off of him because he is going to junk them.He has a 63 chevy 2 wagon body too.
I will try and get some pictures posted .He is getting ready to haul them off.I have been begging him to wait, trying to find someone to take them.He has already junked A 56 chevy pu and 3 early 50s chevy trucks before i knew he was going to do stupid stuff. He is 71 years old and doesn't have a clue of what they are worth.I try to tell him ,But he is my dad .They never listen to their sons.

  9. I almost traded for this truck.I saw it at somersnites cruise in somerset,ky.That is the one vehicle that got away that I kick myself over and over and over again. That was one of the most awesome trucks I have ever seen.Big block that your could eat off of and the interior was unreal.I think it had over 1100 louvers,I hate myself:(

I stayed away from this thread for the longest time cause Ive always wanted a c-10. Finally my dream came true and I picked up my first project. Its a 65' longbed with a 327 sbc and powerglide trany. So much inspiration and ideas to toss around looking through this thread. Couple of questions for you guys though, bare with me cause this is my first project and Im pretty new to things.

-The truck came with 6lug hubs and mag wheels, are there steelies out there for it and or torque thrust? If so anyone got a set they want to sell?!

-What headers can I get for the 327? I keep getting mixed answeres that block huggers wont fit due to motor mounts, and or I need to go with slanted runners...any info?

Awesome rides fellas, Ill be sure to keep posting updates to mine.

Okay, after a year, here's the pic of my '62 Suburban.
Original 283 supposedly rebuilt years ago, has later heads. Stock 2bbl intake, valve covers, etc. Granny Low 4spd. Previous owner swapped in a Dana 44 with Posi, and I was told it has 4.11 gears.
Was originally a California Forestry vehicle--came with heavy duty 3/4 radiator and 7-blade fan.
Previous owners weren't shy about drilling holes in it; there are over 50 different holes drilled in the body, and a lot of canibalism inside.

Bought it a year ago from OldSteelJunky here on the HAMB, and drove it from Joplin to NE Georgia, about 1,000 miles, with my 10 year old son. Only tuned the engine, made new plug wires, changed the fluids and bought new tires before heading out.

In the year I've had it, I've lowered it (crank down the T-bars, new Eaton springs), found a set of original steel wheels, pulled the engine for new gaskets, paint, timing chain and water pump and new 4-row radiator. It's my daily driver, with over 10K miles last year. New wiring is next on the list.

I've got a pair of straight doors, one perfect fender, an original split bench front seat, tail/lift gate, new front bumper, and '60 4-headlight grill for it. I'd like to also find a '62-'66 GMC hood for it. Paint will be suede black and white to match the '57 150 wagon gasser it's going to tow. Engine and trans will be different, but I don't know what yet, and it'll have power steering and power disc brakes.

    -Brad

  20. I guess I don't get it you have one you've driven for 17 years but they don't fit into a trad rod and custom forum. So what you're saying is that you're not a traditional rodder?

Why do you have it? What do you use it for?

I purposely didn't post mine because its a '65 and our official cutoff date is '64 not that the average traditional rod and custom expert would know the difference. It did manage to get itself posted more than once on this thread so I guess I'm happy.

I think there is something that should be recognized here and that is that if you are going to be serious about rodding eventually you are going to find the need for a truck and the C-10 was a popular shop truck in the early '60s. its still a popular shop truck.

trucks are as big a part of trad rodding as anything else that we have grown to accept as traditional rod fodder. The C10 is available and a workhorse so if you need a Pusher or a parts hauler what better choice is there?

I have a 65 on a 72 chassis...The rear cab mounts were moved back about 6". Everything else seems to match okay...

My 62 has a 73 front suspension, the width is very close and a 72 rearend...That work was done in the 70's and its still holding together today...:D

Andy, I have that graphic of the blue 64-66 that you sent me by my 'puter for inspiration.
It's almost spot on. I have the 55 Caddy caps now for it too. ;)
    I have a alum. 63 grill and I'm putting in a knee-knocker dash.

If you still have it, will you post it again?

  27. Great thread. Brings back memories of the 60 Apache and my 62 GMC sbfs v6.

  29. My '65 beater right before I sold it. Ain't it a peach?

I bought this thing looking about this ugly, then drove it for 15 years, and sold it with about 280,000 miles on it. The only thing I had to do on it for the 15 years I owned it was to put a new radiator and alternator and some seatbelts and change the oil once in a while. It had a 283 with dual exhaust and dinky blown out glasspacks and a 4-speed. Sure sounded cool. One time I filled up the bed about 3 feet high with broken up concrete (about 1-1/2 cubic yards), and drove it to the dump with the frame sitting on the bumpstops. Didn't hurt anything. That thing was sure built tough! Chevy tough! :D
