    1949 GMC truck

    Hello,

We were on our weekly drive up the coast. As we got to a used car dealer’s lot, something caught my eye. Over in the corner spot was an old GMC truck painted the color of red primer. But, it looked like faded regular paint, then visible was the lettering on the door. The whole truck paint and lettering looked original and now, with coastal “salt air” corrosion, almost faded away.

Goble Indian Motorcycle Company Phone number: Me 5-2917 It must be out of state as it is missing one number. Most phone numbers listings had 7 numbers or two letters + 5 numbers.

The time period of using Letters shortened from full words started for us in 1948. Ga 25876… The Ga short for Garfield. (GA was used for the city of Lakewood in 1956) Then within 5 years when we moved to our last Westside of Long Beach small home in 1953, Our new number was what we printed on our business card.

    Note:

    In reference:

In 1958, due to increased consumer demand for individual telephone numbers, the telephone company began phasing out old exchange names for all numeric telephone numbers or “All Number Calling” (pretty much gone by 1963). These old exchange names are remembered in Glenn Miller’s song Pennsylvania 6-5000 and Elizabeth Taylor’s movie Butterfield-8.

As our mom stayed in her (our) old Long Beach home, as the Los Angeles county grew by leaps and bounds, her number changed several times to accommodate the incoming residents. So, the letters were dropped and area codes were given. First was 213, then 310, then 562. Each number lasted several years until the phone companies got new customers and then when the cell phones came into being, the area of the city and county covered, expanded.

    Note 2:

Upon calling the local dealer to ask about the old truck, all he could tell me was that it was a GMC pickup and it sold a couple of weeks ago. Someone from out of state came in to drive off with the old truck. So, which HAMB hot rod guy/girl bought it to drive back home, out of coastal area to where ever “home is…”

Remember the Buck Inn well. In '72/'73 I was stationed with the 980th MP Co. at Sierra Army Depot in Herlong , Ca just up US 395 from Doyle. Drank many a beer there.
