These are my favorite Winfield's, on a 30"s Flat Tail Sprinter, "B" Engine, McDowell OHV, Side Drive Magneto, with the two Winfield "S" Carbs on a McDowell Manifold. I do like this car.:)

I am helping a friend clean out a garage of old model A engine parts, beside's the usual burns, zepher & no name down draft aluminum intakes ,we found a home made hi-rise intake that had a tag on it that said it was for a winfield carb/performance set up. the intake rise's a few inch's above a stock hieght A/B intake, it is actually made pretty nice the inside is somewhat ported. I will be posting it for sale in the classifieds to see if there are any interested parties on here?

not sure but I can measure it, it's a big tube. for some reason the guy thinks they used it for tuning or setting up carbs?

FYI -I measured the ID on the intake tube/runners & it is 1.750" ID.

Here's a legend, direct from Ed Iskenderian's lips to my ears. Windfield was a real hero to Isky and he thought Windfield to be a genius. In his later years, Ed Winfield became a recluse, never leaving the house or shop, but still designing and grinding cams. According to Ed, when Chevrolet wanted a high performance cam for the Corvette, they came to Winfield and he designed what became known as the "30-30 Duntov." Ed Windfield told Ed Iskenderian, "Duntov knew a bit about engines, but he wasn't a cam designer. I did that cam."

Winfield was a genius, no doubt about that. A bunch of us used to go to Vegas to see him in the 70's on what we called the Winfield Weekend.
His yellow heads were very common, the early ones used 18mm spark plugs, later ones 14mm. I just built and delivered a yellow head display engine for the new MAFFI museum in Hickory Corners, MI. I would like to have had Winfield carb or carbs on it but couldn't get anyone to step up with such a setup. The head looks good but is no longer useable, too many cracks! Also delivered a Miller display engine built by Steve Straw.

Here is my pride and joy. Ser numbers 1950, 1951, 1698, 1697 on bowls, and the TBs are 1242,1243,1283 and 1284. Cant wait to get them all up and running, probably this time next year.

Does anyone know a ball park date for those serial numbers?

Here's my '40 flatty in the '31 coupe. I love these Winfield carbs. Huge thanks to Brian (brjnelson) for helping me out with these!

That is a neat setup!!! All the above carbs are SR models, not sure when they came out but '32 or later. Beecher has what is know as a matched pair. That means they have consecutive serial numbers. Bowls and throttle bodies came to the dealer in separate boxes, and were assembled at the time of sale.

No pic, but I have a Winfield reground cam for a 322 Nailhead. It is a solid cam ground off of an 'export' cam from Buick. The man I bought it all from said this cam really turned it on!

  16. Another winfield score for me. l think I have close to a full carb. Any diagrams floating around?

  17. Can any one elaborate on what the difference would be between running a updraft vs. Downdraft of the same size winfield carbs. Say I had a model s-bb in up and down configuration.

  18. Here are some diagrams I found helpful...these carbs are ridiculously simple. Let me know if you need some help! Looks like you're off to a great start!

  19. Here's a quote from The Birth of the Chrysler Corporation and its Engineering Legacy:

"One day in 1928 Everett Sheppard, an early development engineer with Holley Carburetor Company, came in and said, 'I would like to discuss some downdraft carburetor ideas with you.' All carburetors then were updraft except for a few horizontal or side draft types.

A downdraft carburetor concept would be ideal because gravity forces would accelerate rather than oppose the flow of liquid fuel particles, and they would be distributed better with less air velocity, producing more power. There would be little or no pockets for fuel to accumulate."

  20. I ended up taking apart one of my others to help assemble the A carb. Looks like I have a complete A updraft with choke and a extra A throttle body and a rough carb horn. I think I am going to let these go and try and pick up a BB downdraft to go on my manifold as I want the Winfield logo facing up. ;)

  21. I guess what I am asking, is there a actual seat of the pants difference between a updraft and downdraft Winfield of the same size and model?

  22. No idea...probably not much. The updraft will have better resistance to flooding, the downdraft more efficient. I'd run whichever was in better shape.

  23. can you run the SR carbs in downdraft without a fuel pump if they have gravity floats?

  24. Anyone? The literature kinda makes it sound like you can.

  25. I am running a BB SR downdraft without a pump and the float was not marked .

  26. Winfield only marked floats for gravity feed. Unmarked floats would have been intended for use with a fuel pump.

Not 100% sure what the difference is, but I imagine the gravity float might be a little heavier or less buoyant to allow fuel to 'flow' into the float chamber more readily. Shouldn't be an issue using a gravity float with a pump - or a standard float with gravity...might have to experiment with the float level to get it just right.

Seeing all these images of 'Holy Relics' gives me goosebumps. I've read a bit on them, and found my way to Winfield through Bruce Crower's articles in Hot Rod Magazine. I wonder what Bruce has to add to all this. Anyone know if he's posting on here? I know in his writing he talked of visiting with Ed, and of their bench racing sessions. I'd bet he has some Winfield parts to die for.

I have a B model with a crow's foot Winfield head, two down draft S-AA carbs and a Winfield R cam

This little mill always gets a closer look for the original Winfield gear it runs...
