I've never run out of gas, I'm a bit paranoid about the gas guage. Well, I've run out on the bike, but it doesn't even have a speedometer, let alone a gas guage. I've always heard that fuel pumps are internall lubricated by the gas that runs through them and running out of gas frequently shortens their life by quite a bit. Anyone know if there's truth to this?
My wife ran out in the truck last year. The gauge seemed to work fine, so we didn't think anything of it driving home from the purchase in Florida. A week or so later, she was driving around town and sputtered to a stop about halfway into a parking lot. A guy in a Ford pushed her the rest of the way into the lot with his truck and gave her a parting shot about driving a Chevy. Turns out the sender float was set wrong, so it reads about 1/4 tank higher than it actually is. I have no idea how we made it home from Florida without running out of gas, but I've made sure to keep it about 1/2 full ever since. Anyway, it started sputtering out again after we filled it up. After ruling out all the fuel-related issues, we finally discovered it also had a bad distributor cap.
At least you didn't run out after breaking up with your girl friend and on the way to drop her off at her house..... that was a long walk
Whenever I run out in my coupe (about once a week), I just reach down and hit the switch to shift tanks and then go fill up the empty one. Ten in front and sixteen in back.
Ran outa gas in my damage free barn fresh '54 Chevy pickup on the interstate once. By the time I got back with gas someone had hit the rear fender and busted off the end of the steel bumper. Whoever hit it paid deeply for it. Those things are build like a tank.
Actually the Apple fell first then the tree on this occasion. Besides you would not no much about running out of gas since you rarely drive over 50 miles.
just got the chevy home from the exhaust shop today.. pulling it in the drive it ran out of gas.. the guy doing the exhaust must have put some miles on her!
ok that trumps me. I had just got the chevy running. I put 5 gallons in at first. messed around with the timing, looking for vacuum leaks, etc. took her to town for much needed exhaust (all of it) ran out of gas as I got to the city limits. My uncle pulled me to the shop, I borrowed the gas can and got 4 gallons. Plenty to get 5 miles home right? I then learned about rusty tanks. I now keep spare filters and a can in the trunk. the only gauge i have, is for oil pressure.
When you run out of gas with an auto trans it feels like the TC is goin out'. I ran out once in my truck and I had about two gallons of weedeater/chainsaw gas in the bed so I poured it in and it got me to the nearest station. Smoked like hell but it kept me from walkin'.
It has happened to me twice in the '62 Chevy 6 years ago. The first time was in the driveway. The second time I was on the bad side of town, had to walk almost 5 miles one way in the hood to the nearest gas station. Ironically I just had ordered the new sending unit the day before. lol David
