My first paint job. 2x4s w/plastic and tarps paint booth in driveway. Semi-gloss black rustoleum mixed w/mineral spirits. It took 24 hours to dry. Still looks ok 4 years later 1475069364748.jpg

I painted this one in my garage, one or two panels at a time, in winter in Wyoming. I did it that way for largely the same reason other people paint in their garage: to save money on facilities. My compressor was not up to the job of painting a whole car at once, but it could handle one or two panels at a time easily enough, with plenty of time for the compressor to catch up between coats. As it happens, painting one or two panels at a time also works better into most of our schedules, since you can sand, mask, prep and paint a panel at a time easily in a couple hours after work, using a space heater to heat up the panel before you spray. It's much harder to keep an entire car at painting temps in an unheated garage. (You guys in SoCal stop your snickering!)

  8. We have our challenges here in SoCal too, Ted. Gotta wait till winter to get a really glossy finish (if you can't afford a climate controlled booth) or the paint wants to flash off too quick!

Hope to try my luck with Rustoleum and a HF 'purple' gun this spring. NEVER made a mistake with Rusto that I couldn't fix with MORE Rusto! I can't afford to learn with GOOD material at $100+ a gallon, then thinner, mask, and on and on... Earl Shibe is my insperation - can't do much worse I figure, might be less work than a wennie roller and foam brush and sanding every couple coats!

image.jpeg I painted this roadster in the garage the first time by hanging plastic sheeting. I used 2stage synthetic enamel. The house stunk for weekend, the washer and dryer were speckled in black. The wife said no more. The body was repainted after some added fiberglass and this time was done outside. I'm smarter than I look.

  14. Paint. eh? Well, I never actually "painted" anything but small parts but primered many cars in my driveway because the garage is too skinny. I blew a coat of epoxy primer on my delivery and damn near killed my prize spruce tree!

DO NOT try this at home!

Car has been sold, along with a large collection of tools painted to match.

IMG_1438.JPG Then on Saturday morn. I lined up the red with a laser to match the sleeper that I painted earlier.
IMG_1442.JPG Taped it up and let the red flow .
IMG_1445.JPG IMG_1446.JPG IMG_1447.JPG Was going to paint the belt line black on Sunday but to cold . So I mounte the doors and put on the mirrors and handles. Next time it is warmer I will paint the black on belt line and my 59 Chevy dash that's going in .

    Hello,

When we were almost ready to install the 671 SBC in our 40 Willys, we got a hold of a spray paint gun and some cans of primer. In our neighborhood in Long Beach, we knew when the winds from the west would start to blow, so we timed it between 10 am and 1:30pm. The primary winds were from the West and we knew when it was starting by smelling what was blowing in the wind…no, not that song. From the Southwest, it was the fiberglass smell from the boat construction yards, from the West was the oil field smell. From the East was the smell from the LA riverbed. The only good smell was during the summer mornings from the South. It was the salt air from the ocean and the summer storms from Mexico. The North only had more homes and unless someone was smoking some unusual stuff, it was pretty clear. We were too far away from Lions to get any fuel smell on the weekends.

So, on this Spring morning, nothing was in the air. We had planned on spraying in the morning and by lunch time, it should be dry. After the standard canvas sheeting on the ground and plastic around some nearby bushes we were ready. Little by little, we sprayed the car in the yard in front of our converted back yard (2nd) garage. It was about 7 feet from the building and on a concrete pad. It went along smoothly and we were finished quickly with a minimal overspray…or so we thought.

Near us were my mom’s multiple, white laundry lines, the 2nd garage windows, and there was a window in the side door to the main garage. They all got plastered even though there was little to no wind. Just that overspray floating in the air and us moving around the Willys. We cleaned up the spray on the windows, but did not notice the specks on the white vinyl coated laundry lines. we did not hear of anything until a few days later.

My mom was in a whirlwind when she found the spray on the nice white laundry lines. She thought it was from gasoline dropped from the planes that constantly flew overhead from the Long Beach Airport to Catalina Island. She asked us what we thought it could be…but being dutiful kids, we volunteered to clean all of it off with paint remover and bleach, never giving her the idea that her two, “good,” sons could be so careless with spray paint.

    Jnaki

The spray job? It looked good for being primer with no runs or blemishes. No flies, no gnats, or bird residue was found on the two coats. Later on in the same spot in the backyard, it was so much easier to put on a color coat design on the top and bottom of surfboards as the color was mixed in to the resin top coat. No overspray, that is for sure…

I painted this car 2X in my parents driveway back in the day, the reason 2X is I learned about blocking, not satisfied will how it looked after first time. I painted racers several times in driveways and some cars, this coming summer, going to repaint front of my Mercury, to fix some road rash, retired now, have more time and do not want to pay today's $$$ for paint/body work. So.... Life comes full circle, painted in driveway 50 years ago, looking forward to the challenge.
