Technical The Painting at home in the driveway or garage thread

Bought this from the Green Bay F.D. Flew there, picked it up, and drove it back to Montana. Tore it apart in front of my house with a sawzall and an angle grinder. Reskinned it in aluminum panels and flat bedded it to haul my LSR roadster. Then shot it with epoxy primer, and finally painted it, with single stage, as well in the street, on 2 really calm mornings. Hard to find a big enough booth!

 

I used Nason epoxy primer, followed by Tamco 5310 High Build..... color is Sherwin William Dimension Single Stage Enamel.....

My good paint gun is at the farm and I kept forgetting to bring it back with me, so I shot all of the paint on this with a cheap HF purple HVLP gun...... $15 on sale. I had been told that they shoot good, and it did. I don't think I could have done any better with a $1000 gun. A real painter probably could but not me. I also used the T-cup disposable cup system from Tamco...... the adapter cost twice what the gun cost and I can't say enough good about it. I used one gun for primer and drilled out the tip for the thicker primer, I splurged and broke out a new $15 gun for the color.

 

I painted my 32 in a garage with a dirt floor in 1966. Just put down cardboard, hosed it down and got after it- didn’t have a clue. Repainted the rear fenders and trunk lid in 1995. The upholstery was done in 1966 or 67 by Vernon McKean. No upholstery in trunk because we could not afford it. I painted the Chevelle in our front yard in Ponca City, OK in 1992. I had it in pieces. Lots of trouble with wind and dirt. Both are DuPont Marina blue lacquer. Both are pretty shabby now but don’t look terrible from more than 50 feet if your eyes aren’t too good. The pictures were taken about 3 years ago.

 

I talked to Bill Hines several years ago & he gave me the idea to put wet newspapers on the floor before you paint. I did it and it works... It keeps the dust down & makes clean up a breeze!

 

I made a booth in my shop with filtered intake and exhaust. Never painted before. This was my first one and I was using a 3M accuspray gun with a 1.3mm tip. Valspar BC/CC. Hardly any orange peel and 1 minor run.

I wish I'd thought of that when I did my boat.
I had turquoise paint on my driveway for about . . . well . . . at least until we sold that house.

 

Not finished yet, painting my 1950 Chevy truck in pieces in a homemade booth in my garage. The color is Mini Cooper ice blue (single stage) but for some reason it’s coming out with more of a green tint instead of blue. I like it though. I think the biggest challenge when doing this is determining when it’s “good enough”. I’m aiming for perfection which isn’t very realistic for a first attempt at painting but every flaw drives me nuts. I got the plans for this booth from this thread.

 

Repainted the roof in my crusty little shop. Got halfway through the last coat of clear and knocked a bunch of dust into it when my elbow hit the garage door opener. One nice thing about bascecoat/clear is that it's real easy to sand out the dirt and buff it back up. I'm real pleased with how it came out.







I still have to give it one last sand buff and polish but again, happy with the result.

I kind of wish I would have done base/clear but The SS is coming out decent so far. I usually have some kind of incident like this every time I spray. I think there is so much time put into prep work, I’m just so amped up when it comes to spray time. I really have to remember to breath.

 

painted this in my garage with a 3 dollar brush and a 8 dollar quart of Walmart house paint, scuffed the edges a bit,... 2 easy days of fun....

 

You've got some great looking trucks Rusty, they have that "let's in jump and and GO" look.

It's going on a different frame.

painted my 36 in front of my barn under a canopy...

 

Never painted a whole car before my recent one. I painted the occasional hood, or 1/4 panel, etc. and the results were somewhat mixed. Never horrible, but sometimes ending less than I hoped for.
Last year I got to the point I wanted to get paint on my '39 Chev project. Of course I first tried to find someone who did it cheap at home or their own shop, but nothing came up. Then I tried to find someone who'd rent a paint booth and allow me to use it for a couple days to paint my '39. Nothing worked there either.
I finally decided to attempt painting it in my tiny 10'x20' shop where it was built. Barely enough room to step back from the car, and no windows to open, so had to crack the rear barn doors enough to set a box fan in the opening, and block above that with clear plastic to exhaust the fumes.
To my surprise it actually came out much better than I expected, and although not show quality, I felt it was plenty good enough for my build.























I was happy enough with the paint job that I got brave, and decided to take a chance and do the lettering myself also. So my first try at lettering a car was also on the '39.











None of the paint or lettering is perfect. But I'm happy with the car, and take full blame, or responsibility for everything done on it. I even bought a old commercial Singer sewing machine, and sewed up the upholstery for it!

Painted my '40 coupe in a gas station bay (1961), nitro-lacquer, my '61 Chev in my folks driveway (1965), acrylic lacquer........old pix don't show the high quality finish.....

 

I know I’m doing this wrong…..but…this is my mid engine 65 Covair…white base, cover in clear with metal flake…….and more, and more. The metalflake color is warm beer…….forgot to mention doing this in lacquer.

 

I'm rolling Rustoleum as well. Your truck looks great. I like the Merc tail lights too.

 

I painted chassis and suspension parts over a tarp in the shop. I used rattle can Eastwood Extreme Chassis Black; it covered well and after a couple years and 2500 miles is holding up well. That paint has a lot of solids and they drift far and wide while spraying.

This Has Been Done Since They Invented Paint...

 

I painted a Model A body and associated parts in a home-made spray booth that ran me about $300 in parts and some time. Two box fans blowing through furnace filters for air in and one pulling through a filter for air out. After several sessions I think sparing air in and relying mostly on exhaust air worked best.

In the end I probably could have rented a real booth once for the same cost, but I’ve done several projects in mine, so it works out.

Paint: House of Kolor Wild Cherry Kandy Base over their Shimron Black ground coat which was over their sealer. DuPont Chromabase clear.
Spray Gun: Eastwood Concourse 2 (about $200).
Air source: Craftsman 30-gal 150 psi compressor (worked, but loud and barely kept up)
Results: A friend did most of the painting, as I had no experience (I did the black ground coat). I did the cut-and-buff. Lots of nibs to deal with, but came out very nice.

The process was a re-paint over a candy that a previous owner had sanded through and had other defects due to some body mods of my own.

The booth pictures don’t show the ceiling and one side wall. The garage door closes over the knee wall with the exhaust filter in it.

Did it the old school way warmed up the garage, wet the floor. Put box fan by back door and started spraying. Didn’t come out that bad some minor dust that cut very easy. Lower pressure helps on the overspray.
