I am looking for information /pictures /and anything else that is available on Project X when it was supposedly powered by a 292 Chevy six. I have read that it was indeed powered by an inline ( 292 ) but have yet to find the article / pictures or details. I have a 57 at this time. And my blown six that I built many moons ago is supposed to be back home in a week or so. I am and have always been an in-line guy. I have an idea/and a thought. Just kicking the van around in the shops. I mean I finally finished one ( Willy’s) -almost /and have a prefect /ope /and this 57. I can’t help it. Any and all help is welcomed. Lol Build all you can while you can.
It was powered by a 292 v8, several articles referred to it as a 292, which is nothing more than an overbored 283... Never had a 6 banger in it
I was reading an old article and it specifically made reference to a 292 six. Got me to thinking and I wondered if I missed something. I was simply wanting to see if it actually did come about /happen. Would not be a hard swap all but front mounts and still not hard simply checking
Just because someone mistakenly wrote it does not make it true. The statement you posted above is clearly a mistake by someone that does not know that a .060 over 283 is 292 cubes... the car never had a six
I looked at that article and the author was Steven Rupp, I mean no disrespect to him but he’s wrong, as @Moriarity said it never had six cylinder power. Motortrend.com has been rife with errors since they brought in a new crop of writers, there are often mistakes so take their reporting with a grain of salt.
Yeah it's like watching an old movie and the guys are looking under the hood and one guys says "yeah it's a hemi with dual carbs and 500 horse" and a quick glimpse of the motor shows a big block rb motor with single 4 barrel.... or six shooters in westerns that never need reloading..... . ..
All the others have stated it, no six for X. I've geeked out on Project X since I was a kid in grade school. Also glad to see it's new iteration is at least gasoline powered. Go for it with your own blown 6! I always kind of liked the 6 cyl hood, only a script, and a crest on the trunk lid.
If I get caught up it will be. I built this many years ago when we were running front engine rails. Everyone was doubting it then until we showed up in a lot of circles. Probobly the most trouble free engine I ever had at the time. But the Donovan eats parts /and honestly was over kill for what we were doing. No doubt it will not be as fast as some of my other stuff but then again I am known for doing my own thing. Not a follower. Don’t want to be. Not arguing those that apparently know more than me on project X History. I am after all a 67 model. I simply wanted to see how if it actually was done. Build all you can while you can.
I’ll vouch for the 292 in Project X being a .060 over 283 V8. I remember when they did it. I probably have those Project X issues tucked away on the top shelf of the pallet racks in my garage.
And if I goes as my vision I have plans to convert that hat to a real injection unit. Not just a carb cover/scoop. Yes I know. Lol
Obviously a lazy writer heard or saw in print somewhere 292 cubic inches and****umed it was a 6 banger..
Getting it on road right now. sbc /Muncie /etc/etc.( actually here on Hamb like some of my other stuff). Was reading those articles and saw the INCORRECT info in the motor trend article.
Completing brake set up and lines right now. Maybe. Few things left.depends on how I like its street manners. Just thinking out loud.
Had a good friend back in the late 90's that had a blown 6 in his 57 chevy. I seen pics of it with the blower sticking thru the hood towards the drivers side, it would make you stop and do a double take. I never personally heard it run but had a few friends that did, said it sounded cool and definitely caught your eye with the hood open. ..
How could you guys yack about a car that is now sporting an ls motor..YUCK!.. . Somebody kill this thread please.... Thanks!...
Because they're not talking about the ls version, they're talking about the good ol days, don't be hating on X
Hey, Mitchell; A real nice period-perfect clone of a very early ProjectX would be very cool, esp w/a hot six. Just to screw w/folks, get a nice screenshot, or better yet, a print copy w/the 292 six highlighted, & hang it in a rear side window. The "Secret Unkown ProjectX..." Hahhahhahaha... Proper color, wheels, etc. Make folks do a dbl-take. . All my past PHR are stripped-out & gone, & the Reprint booklet that I got way back then, is only B&W. Still have it & it's still B&W... You'll have to do some researching for colors n such. As I remember, it ran factory paint n interior for a fairly long while, since it was a hands-on lab-experiment. Don't remember much in color pics 'till it was nice-looking. Just some descriptions in the articles. Good luck. Marcus...
