The RACEFAB Raffle Motor...the saga continues!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by SamIyam, Oct 8, 2003.

  1. I want to first thank RACEFAB again for his generousity in building the RAFFLE motor for the HAMB. I don't think there would have been a HAMB Drags II if Fred wasn't there to support the event, and the HAMB, unconditionally.

So, LA32 and I finally got a chance to talk about the RACEFAB raffle motor tonight... and it looks like the BFD Crew is going to be buying the motor from him. When the original raffle went down, I got in touch with him and we made him a reasonable offer... and told him to think it over... At the time, LA32 was moving into a new house and all... so understandably, he took a month to think it over. And then tonight I got the call and we chatted about the plusses and minusses of us buying it or shipping it out to him... in the end, he elected to take the money and spend it on other parts for his roadster... Also, LA32 has built a fresh 327 for his '32 Roadster... so the motor would have probably sat idle for a while. Anyway, we are excited that we will be able to run the Goodguys Drags on November 1st with it... which will be the first time that we actually get to compete with the car!
After that, I'm going to pull it apart and strengthen up the bottom end. I plan on machining (honing on the Sunnen CK-10) the bores out to the proper clearence for forged (12.5:1) pistons. I'm also contemplating polishing the beams on the rods, and maybe trying to find a forged crank for it... some guys say the cast crank is fine though... and it will all get a balance job. Next up for mods will be the addition of a solid lifter cam (something that pulls from 4000-7000rpm, degree'd in) and a set of matching springs... and to help compliment the new found RPM's will be a bigger oil pan that is baffled and has a windage tray. And if money allows, we're going to top this whole thing off with the NOS Enderle injection unit that I have... and run the thing on alcohol... my buddy who has experience with the injection units says to send it off to Kinsler and have them flow it all and make your pills... but that sounds expensive. [IMG]

So, what will all these mods give us? I am hoping for some 9 second runs and my NHRA license. [IMG]

Anyways, I knew a lot of you guys have been wondering what ever happened to the raffle motor... so I thought it would be nice to update you all on what the status is on the motor.

    Any questions? [IMG]
    Sam.

Good, then you can bring it back out to Bonneville next year so it can do double duty as an alarm clock.

    Good fer you Sam.

Let me know if you will need a hand at the drags. I will not be running the digger. To many gremlins have plaged us this year and a new motor is going to be in it for next year. Should be seeing times like yours if all goes well.

Having all that stuff flowed by Kinsler will be pricey but can be worth it in the long run when you are looking for that extra little bit of HP. I have a spread sheet I built for the injection that can be a big help if you are interested. It has been very good for us so far.

Glad to hear that someones luck with their race car is going well. Congrats.

  5. Nice sam!!!! I am afraid of seeing you get SERIOUS with that thing!!!!!!!!! MOKAN was enough to prove it to me!!

  6. Are you lookin for a steel crank? 350,or 400 stroke? I know of a good steel standard 350 crank.Give me some specs on the motor and car and I will ask Joe Boghosian what cam he would suggest, if it would help.

I'd be happy to do some carving and polishing on your crank -- to make it a bit slicker getting through the oil goo, and also make it a bit tougher when bad stuff happens up above.

kinda funny recalling the whole saga of this car/motor.

remember how it started as a intro to drag racing for those that could not put themselves in the seat of a relatively quick car? so some less fortunate rodders might be able to pilot a HOT ROD. so people donated parts. and along came the raffle. well next thing you know the motors a little too hot for just any ol joe shmoe to drive, and the issue of liability enters. ok so we're left with the raffle, and i can understand the winners cir***stances why he doesn't need the motor, but geez sam, why doncha just leave the motor alone? stab it in the RR or something. just something inside me that thinks theres plenty of young rodders out there that would have killed to have the winning number for that ricer killer motor. and been happy with the cam, and the induction and the crank...and whatever else you're gonna change.

where did i get lost? [IMG]

  9. Sam,
That is very cool...that motor has history with your car now...sad to see the two seperated almost!

    Go for it!

I am also happy to see it staying put, kind of where it belongs and I'm looking forward to hearing about it's updates and progress.

Don't forget, I heard you tell Mr Bones he gets to take a turn with you down the track. I'll be there in spirit. Good Luck.

    well its finally over,

i do want everybody to know that my wife and i had decided if the winner was not at MOKAN, that we would pay the shipping for any one that won the motor, be it from Sams or Ryans, that offer was p***ed on to LA32

I will keep this short, i had hoped that someone would win the engine that needed it to finish a project, and that we would get to see it continue on for a while, a little bit of on going HAMB history.

the engine did take on a little to much racecar flavor at the end, the heads were a little much for a street car, and have a whole lot of northwest drag history behind them, so it is good to see them put where they should be, on a racecar.

as far as i am concerned when the engine gets redone it will no longer be the RACEFAB raffle engine as most of the parts will be changed as well as the donated items.

good luck to the BFD crew in their chase for the 9's

i hope to have a engine raffle for the HAMBdrags 2, i am currently looking around for a suitable core, and would like suggestions as to how to make the next one better, and possibly easier for the winner to aquire.

Good deal for all involved. Sam Im glad the motor is staying put. Racefab a nice warmed over street motor would be plenty for a giveaway. Like you said a motor to help someone get their project going. Your a hell of a guy for doing this. And I agree need to be in attendance to win...lot les h***le that way.

I'm still in shock over Racefab. I am going to personally make sure you are at the next HAMBdrags.

Still bugging Kevin about the shirts. He said they are in que...

  17. Hey Fred... I got an idea... would the pistons out of the RACEFAB motor be good for the HAMB Drags Raffle motor #2??
What about the CAM? and any other stuff we don't use? I want to talk to you about the crank too... will it live at 7000rpm? For how long? I also have a decent 350 block I'd give to the project... and one camel hump head that has been cut for big springs and screw in studs and guide plates... A guy gave it to me... so I'll gladly p*** it on to you... anything else? What about the pan?

Call me up some time and we can chat about it...
    Sam.

Yup that was one of the finer moments this year! Altho Sam didn't think so at the time. [IMG]

I was kinda hoping that if I didn't win it, then Sam would.
Guess it worked out in the end. Go for it Sam...
