  2. Too cool and what an adventure. I drove from Golden, British Columbia to Escondido, California to Pensecola, Florida through New Orleans in a beat down 1973 Volkswagon Van at 21 and too dumb to know better. Now that I know better, I wouldn't do it in my wildest dreams. You are our collective Hero!

Say hi to Elvis. He's probably around there somewhere; probably working in a gas station...

there are 5 pictures of elvis in my room! and he's also in the lobby playing a guitar (or a plastic replica thereof)

I got to visit a swamp. And watch a big truck get stuck on a narrow bridge on a little one lane dirt road. Just the normal stuff you see when driving a 59 Rambler in the Delta

  10. The car actually looks pretty good. A Rustoleum roller job would make it look a bit better.

I used to fly into Midland/Odessa Texas regularly. You can see those things from a LONG way up.

Thanx for the updates; we're watching constantly for them. I'm anxious to see if another participant paints the Rambler. Maybe some rattle can metal flake on the roof.

I can drive on whichever side I want...I just get points for the checkpoint picture. I'm going to try to take a ferry across the river at Galena today, just because the ferry we were supposed to take a couple days ago wasn't running due to low water level. I don't know if the Gears Ferry is running, but I'll give it a try.

I'm still in second place for points, which is kind of surprising, I'm not really trying very hard. I just have a great car :)

yesterday I got a couple guys to do a little bit of painting on my car (think Tom Sawyer getting his friends to whitewash the fence).

Today's route, we end up at the Transportation Museum in the afternoon. Stop by and say hi if you're in the Twin Cities area.

  20. Don't linger too long at the World's Largest Six-Pack! Though a picture (or pitcher) would be nice . . .

All my checkpoint pictures are on Instagram, #ramblernerd. I'm visiting relatives in Minneapolis today, then I'm planning to head towards Dallas, then west.

Show this to your relatives in Minneapolis, and tell them this is the next vehicle you plan to use, for the next lemons rally.

Thanks! I left the Cities yesterday around 4, after spending some time visiting my aunts/uncles and one cousin.

The car seemed be using a LOT of fuel on the drive down to Des Moines. Like, almost twice as much as normal. The weather app says there's a 10-15 mph headwind, and I was trying to drive about 68 mph with the cruise control on, but it spent a lot of time slowing to the low 60s. The fuel I bought came from a pump that had a smorgasbord of Ethanol mixtures available, I picked 87 octane...I wonder if I got some extra alcohol? or maybe the choke is not opening all the way because it's 25 degrees out? or the headwind is just really hard on it? I'll see what happens on the next tank, and probably keep the speed down to around 60 and see how it goes.

Dang Jim, you’re either an early riser or adjusted to the time difference quickly! Safe travels.

  30. So what's the heat source for the automatic choke? Doea it use exhaust heat or did AMC opt for plumbing coolant to the choke t/stat housing? I'm guessing you've got the coolant temp up where it belongs. Running at these higher speeds with maybe more humidity isn't icing up the carb, is it? I don't suppose there's any preheat stove tube going to the air cleaner on these cars. Maybe the vacuum advance has conked out.

I'm sure it isn't anything that can't be fixed with bailing wire and duct tape.

    ;)
