Wow man, that looks real good. Never tried lead myself, I'm more a fan of the technology. Wanna come work for me?
Ha!! Thanks, but we're going to be moving to the Austin, Texas area in five or six years, once my house is worth enough. If you were in Texas, it would be really tempting!!! There's no real distinct advantage to lead, but I like the process. For some reason, it feels a little more "real" to me, even though I might cover it with plastic. Give lead a chance, you might like it!!
Thats funny becasue we are going to Austin too, in about 3 or 4 years. Maybe by the time you're there I'll have a shop open...
was that A ever a dark blue? It looks like one I knew from the late 60's early 70's I'll go thru some old photo's but not this week.
That would be AWESOME, Bill!! Are you looking in Austin proper or outside? We're looking at a little town called Burnet about an hour N-NW of Austin. Check it out!! NONAME, I didn't find any blue at all on it. I did find some purple under all the bondo, though... No updates today. I went to the Primer Nationals in Ventura. I haven't been since 2004, and almost didn't go again this year. It was neat!!
Not that anyone asked, but there's been no progress on my '31. I've been working on a project for a friend that should be done in the next week or two. I did, however, score a set of heads off the fancy pants auction site for my 331. Anyway, that's about it for now. Back to lurking!!
I have 2 wknds left I think. One final block and then my sealer. I can't wait to get back on my '51. I sometimes hate being away form my own projects for too long. Get back to work!
I hear ya. There's always something that comes up. This should be the last long term distraction for a while, until I have another three deuce intake and stacks to build. But the next guy isn't going to have the money for quite a while. All I have to do at the moment is lathe work. The sooner I get through that, the sooner I can get back on my '31. At least this is less "favor" and more "pay me" work. You have a '51 what?
Ford Shoebox. The plan is for a chop, 302/T5, the whole kustom treatment. So far the firewall is painted, the harness is run, and I have one piston in the motor. I've had the car just over a year. If I have a project I skip the favor work, unless its something I really want to do. For instance me and my buddy have this sick idea for his car that I just want to paint.
I try to do the same, but I find that sometimes the only way to keep a friend's car on the road is to bite the bullet. Sometimes, it's "Hey Jack, how would you do this?", followed by, "I don't know, let's figure it out." Other times, I'll see **** work on a friend's car, and take it upon myself to fix it (with their permission, of course). (Kind of like seeing a friend with a booger hanging out of his nose; you wouldn't just let him walk around with it there, right?) I complain about it, but more often than not, I only have myself to blame. This explains how and why I have five projects that are all dead. I'll help some of my friends out because they're interested in how stuff is done, and don't run off to play video games or whatever. After my '31, I want to get my truck done. (There's a pic of it earlier in this thread.) I started working on it again, but then I got distracted by thoughts of Hemis and superchargers and really light cars. After the truck, it's a toss up between my '52 Customline or my '64 Skylark. The Skylark needs a lot, but is closer to being a running, driving car than the '52. The '52 is getting chopped, bagged, '56 Packard taillights, '54 DeSoto grille, and if I can find one, an 8BA and a T5. (It currently has a 302/C4.) I also have a '70 Chevelle that a guy in my club keeps threatening to buy, but if he doesn't, my girlfriend wants it. We'll build it for her, then she'll sell it and buy what she really wants: a '58 Impala. I'll get to build that, too, I guess. Not any time soon, obviously.
So, no, I haven't given up, I'm just busy with other stuff. However, while I'm waiting for some milling cutters to arrive, I plan to get back to filing the cowl, after I clean up my lathe and milling machine. The body will also have to be moved inside after this project is finished. Either that, or I'm going to have to get a pop up or something. We're starting to get some morning dew here, and the body is already exhibiting signs of flash rusting. I did get a set of heads for my Hemi, though. Just waiting for them to arrive.
Flash isn't that big of a problem, but if you have the space, bring it in. Its amazing you guys have the kind of weather that allows you to work outside constantly. I will usually let the flash go until I'm done w/ metalwork, just because even inside with the humidity, I'd be spending more time chasing that than anything else.
That's the problem. I don't really have the room inside. But once I'm done with this other project, I can put my fabrication table outside for the time being. That will at least allow me to work on one side of the car, and then I can push it back outside, turn it around, and work on the other side. It'll make welding on the body that much easier. I may get a pop up anyway. Humidity isn't such a huge problem here, but I live about two miles from the beach, so we get the "marine layer" in the mornings. That's where the flash rust comes from. I use a product called The Must For Rust which takes off flash rust almost instantly. I hit some of the worst areas on my coupe with some of that today, scrubbed lightly with a maroon scuff pad, and presto!! Flash rust is gone. I've been hitting a couple of 9" housings with it every few hours today, and it's taking the rust right off without me touching them at all. I'm not affiliated with the manufacturer at all, just a very satisfied customer.
The heads for my Hemi finally arrived today, so I'm going to run them over to the machine shop and have them hot tanked and magged. No body stuff to update on unfortunately.
What can I say? I'm a product of my generation. Unfortunately, life (in this case, working on someone else's project) got in the way... Another week or two, and I'll be back at it.
Nothing really new to report, other than the big important parts of my Hemi (heads and block) magged OK, and I just got an original '30-'31 firewall off eBay. Oh yeah, and thanks to a fellow HAMB'r, I'll have spindles next week. I've been busy with outside projects, and I've had some nasty cold or flu this whole week, which has made machine work and welding, um, interesting. So there...
Jack, Keep us informed as you start making progress. My body is on the frame and my buddy Chuck is busy making body mounts and I believe has a simple plan for the floor. Still need to send you those pix of the mill. 41 Dave
Hey Dave!! Yeah, shoot me some pix!! I made some real progress on this other project today after having been sick for the last week. As always, shouldn't be more than another week or two. I'm just glad that the guy I'm doing all this for isn't in a huge hurry.
Finally, I managed to get something done for my coupe, though it's nothing major. I welded the rear end housing together. Just a Currie/9+ round back center and tubes, but it's one less thing.
You got enough gl*** to build a Corvette. Looks like a good project. Keep the progress pics coming. Good luck.
Ha!! Yeah, it's mostly gone now, though. There's still a little on the inner quarters, and some still up under the visor. I should be able to get back to it very soon, with more regular updates.
While I'm waiting on some parts for this damnable outside project, I managed to get a few things done around here. This is a firewall that I got off the eBay. The seller made it sound way worse than it actually is. It even still had the cowl tag, though it's completely illegible. I've started filling the unnecessary holes: And I actually got some stuff done on my panel truck. I started the cowl replacement four years ago, and then life got in the way: some friends needed some help, I bought a house, got divorced, etc. Anyway, the p***enger rocker is tacked in. FINALLY. I'm hoping to have that whole side done by the end of next week: When I do finally get going on my truck, I'll post another thread about it. I was just really jazzed to make some progress on both of my main projects that I thought I'd post that one photo. Oh yeah, thanks to modifieddriver, 6deucecaddy, Deadlights, and VAPHEAD all here on the HAMB, I now have spindles, a set of STRAIGHT split wishbones, steel tube for my ch***is, and a front crossmember. Thanks guys!!!
hey this is a little late on this post been under fire so to speak Anyway I used grill cleaning blocks to define curves , edges n body lines they dont remove metal but smooth out filler to the body lines as well as panel flat areas next to them. Can be purchased at any restaurant supply smart n final here loally
