Go to the Jalopy Journal and read Ryan's article on the gospel according to Horton. I remember that interview from many years ago. The music The Reverand plays seems to compliment our lifestyle. The last time I saw them play was at the Tremont in Charlotte NC and I got into a fistfight. Beside that it was one of the best shows I have seen in a while, Los Straightjackets opened for them (awesome surf music ala D.D.), they were really into it. Jimbo!

Any good Rev. Horton Heat concert stories out there? Or just good concert stories?

Maybe I'll have one after Sat night's show in Dallas. I haven't seen Jim or Jimbo in a few years, so I'm looking forward to it. Anyone know what became of Jim's 5-window he was having built some years ago?

i saw them at the horse smokeout with a bunch of drunk bikers....you had 2 type of people, the fans and the bikers, there was a "mosh" pit...it was strange scene.

i wouldnt say the music compliments "my" lifestle, but i like a few songs.

  4. Those guys are cool as hell. When I was in the Tarantulas we played a gig with them at Martyr's in Chicago. We hung out with the Rev and Jimbo and I had the Rev sign my Gretsch. My wife got wasted and her friend started some kind of drama and I wound up having to baby sit the two of them all night. Man was I pissed! It was the smallest club I think I've ever seen them play and I could have been right on the side of the statge watching. The next day I reamed her a new one but good. She was so sorry that she volunteered to give me one day of labor on my car as payback. I haven't spoken to her friend since then, and that was at least 3 years ago. They're one of those bands that I never get sick of. Although, I have to say that the last album wasn't that great. But hey, I don't care, I'd go see them any day of the week.

I blushed when I read that story this morning... It's weird reading something you wrote after growing up a little bit. I had good energy though - you have to give me that!

As for Jim, I like his music ok... I don't really listen to it much anymore, but I love going to his shows. And the last time I went to one of his shows, I was with RF and he.... uhhh.... had a great time.... :)

Stickylifter, he played 4 shows that week, and one was at the Hideout, which holds about 75 people. It was awesome, and I was right in front.

The Rev will always be one of my biggest musical influences.

He's playin' Stubbs in Austin Friday night. I'm gonna be headed that way Thursday night for San Antonio. Might drag my boy back to Austin for the Friday night show. I've never had the pleasure of seein' him, and dig his music.
Any chance of you, or any Austin HAMBers bein' there?

Dang, I'm old. I saw Horton Heat a bunch in the late 80's in Dallas and at the Black Cat in Austin. Back when they were more of a rockabilly band. Jim and his bass player would both be cordless. This was before Jimbo. He had a guy from Denton called Slappin Jack something or other. Anyway, they'd play Club Dada in Dallas. By the end of the show, they'd both be out in the street playing. I mean, actually out on Commerce (?) dodging traffic while playing the song. Fun stuff.

My favorite show story was a bit later when Jimbo and Taz were in the band. I'd guess real early 90's. Before they go signed, if that helps date it.

They played the Black Cat alot. Next door was a massage parlor called the Midnite Rodeo, or something like that. Right on 6th street. So Jim is going to town on some solo or another and is out off the stage kinda in the middle of the club/ dance floor. His goes into the solo and lays down on his back on this grungy, beer soaked floor. Full on rock star, right. Well, this very not attractive, middle aged, Asian massage parlor chick starts kinda dancing around him. She's got on a short skirt on and heels is all I remember. So she's really digging being the center of attention. She decides to give Jim a "show" of her own. She's dances over puts one foot on either side of his head and squats down about 6 inches from his face. It becomes quickly apparent that she ain't wearing no panties! I'll never forget the look on his face as he tried to squirm out from under her to get back on his feet. Good stuff and fun times.

I haven't seen them in probably 12-15 years. I may try to go Sat. for old times sake.

Wow, '98' I was a year out of high school and still pickin my nose then. Thanks for the flashback Ryan. I missed the Rev's Chicago show last Fall. I thought there's no way it would sell out. (Dumbass!) Funny thing was that my alternative was to go to an "all you can drink" bar benifit thing. Peolpe are dressed up real nice, suits and ties and shit, and heres me in my Pile-up shirt and work boots! Oh well, I got drunk anyway.

The Reverend Horton Heat is truly one of the worlds greatest bands. The only band i truly love to listen to and that has never gotten old over the years. Just flat out AMAZING. I've seen 'em twice , and will twice more in Atlantic City and DC before the year is up

    Man, Ryan,
I'm jealous you actually got to meet the Rev. in the flesh. It's too bad you're going to miss his show in Austin. My girlfriend got us tickets to his show in Boston for my birthday, and between that upcoming event and your article, it stirred to life some old memories.
Seems like all the memories I have surrounding the Reverend are good and just a little fuzzy.
I remember when I first moved to Maine, didn't know a soul, much less anyone who even knew who the hell the Reverend Horton Heat was. I was resigning myself to driving down to Portland by myself to go see the show. Just for shits and giggles I asked the cute girl sitting across from me in art class if she wanted to go see it with me. I was surprised when she jumped at the chance. Not only did we have a great time, to top it all off, when we got back to my place it turned out she was wearing a "It's Martini Time" thong she got at a concert of his the previous year. MMMM-boy!
Thanks for dredging up some pleasant memories!

We were invited by the House Of Blues to bring our cars to the Rev show last Saturday.
Rev's Rev, unchanging, still doing what they do. We never got to meet them, but it was a good time.
All the rockabilly dorks dug our cars, made us feel good. Lots of hot chicks too, that was nice.

The Rev. rules! Feel lucky I've seen him a couple times in Columbus, OH... Newport music hall. They actually opened up for Sublime once. Strange. Anyway, they ruled and to this day I still say they are one of the best bands I have ever seen! I really hope they start coming to Vegas a little more often. Always seem to miss them here.

What I can't understand is how Jim's always in a particular stage of baldness, he never seems to get any balder, he was just as bald in that video as he is now.

    Amazing!

No kiddin' that's old Buzz... You can even date it when the roadie walks by in the background wearing the tye dyed shirt and the TIGHT short shorts... It's when everyone dressed in 'dazzling' colors and watched Saved By The Bell...

I was in Cancun about 3 months ago eating lunch, and two tables over was Jimbo and family on vacation. They were really cool and I found out that we are practically neighbors, too. Small world!

The fact that you noticed some dudes tight shorts and mentioned watching Saved By The Bell in the same post kinda frightens me a little.

The first time I saw them was in about '96. They literally played 4 hours total. It was AWESOME. I have seen them probably twice a year since then. It never gets old.
