Admittedly, this one’s a little silly—but it’s been a fun side project. I had one of those standard-issue chrome Mallory coils on my coupe, and the thing just stuck out like a sore thumb. Too shiny. Too loud. Too something or other... So I grabbed my trusty can of SEM Ultra Trim Black, gave it a coat, then started messing around with the laser. The result? Introducing: The Rex Ignition Master Coil. Because why the hell not.
Looks great! I miss having access to a laser as there's so many things you can do with one. I can't believe that it's been almost 20 years since I did these. I'm sure doing them now-a-days is much simpler. Back then it was a lot of trial and error.
Already sanded it off and started over—design changes, you know how it goes. That said, I could probably be talked into making one for somebody… if they sent me a pre-painted coil and understood the risk involved. I’m no laser wizard. You ever see Real Genius with Val Kilmer? Yeah, I’m basically the dumb version of that guy—just with fewer lasers and more trial and error. That’s what computers are for man.
quoting Val Kilmer “ I’ll be your huckleberry “ what kind of paint ? Do I send it to World Headquaters ?
"WREX" Is a very cool way to spell "REX" Just saying if you want to be a slightly bit different! I always liked the word "APEX" as well, great mental image of the logo of a gorilla hand with a piece of chalk making the letter "X" Everyone's results may vary greatly!
Edelbrock started with just one part in a tiny garage. When you end up a billionaire from your custom coil business, try to remember us little people. -Abone.
Hahaha... I think Vic was a pretty accomplished engineer... I'm still working on my arithmetic. Here's my next attempt: All of this is being done without my brother's permission by the way... Prolly gonna get sued.
Only about 1000 times. Would you qualify that as a launch problem or a design problem? Holyfeld? Student beauticians...
Just a thought... What about using pvc free, adhesive vinyl? Cut your design and simply wrap the coil...
I think it would look like vinyl wrapped around the coil and I'm not sure I would dig that look. The way I'm doing it now, I'm essentially just engraving the paint off the coil and exposing the pot steel underneath. It feels and looks more real... if that makes sense. Plus, it's super easy to do. Just design your art, throw the coil on the rotary and hit play.
That first version, though * * * I'm pretty sure my old dad had a pair of socks that looked like that pattern. This is not meant as a putdown of the concept. I dig details like that. Not silly.
