The Roach Rod didn't sell...

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by SamIyam, Sep 13, 2004.

  1. I hope I didn't scare people away... I told people who asked what the reserve was, what it was... 13k

So I have to ask... is that too much money for the car? Is it only worth the $7900 that it got up to? I'd like to think it is worth more.. Is it worth at least 10k?

Maybe the video of me beating in it turned people away.
Maybe my description was too much.

Who knows... I'll probably take it to Billetproof and try to sell it... if it doesn't sell, I'll list it on e-bay in the spring...

Do you think that timing has anything to do with it? Will it bring that much more if it sells in the spring? Has anyone else noticed the price of these things aren't bringing as much as they did a year ago?

Maybe the RAT ROD thing is loosing its steam... maybe the people who want a car like mine think they can build one for less...

I'm bummed... maybe McDonalds is hiring...
    Sam.

  2. **** that! NEVER APOLOGIZE for anything that is not wrong! Never second guess yerself. My 54 goes up $100 every month, just to keep the tire kickers at bay.

maybe you should just keep it and hand it down to your kids?

  4. You know how it is... ya think something is the ****... and then ya get told different... If anyting, I just need to get an honest opinion about the car. I know for me it is the coolest thing I've ever built... I know I have had more fun driving it than anything else I've ever driven... its reliable, FAST... gets killer mileage... is COMFORTABLE... Ask anyone who has ever ridden in it.

  6. how much did that kid get for the tractor wheeled thing?

Prices. heavy topic. the top end stuff is going through the roof. six figures will be the norm for 32-34 cars real quick and 30-50 will be the norm for nice A's. 20-30 for a T like yours.

It's like land on the beach. I have never seen your car but I dont think it's a roach. I noticed your ***le lacked the key words that bring it up in most hotrod searches on the Bay. You may simply try posting it again with other key words and the option to have it pop up on the ebay main page.

I think they give you a break if you re-list it. It's worth another 40 bucks. Ebay catches alot of **** on here but it is world wide and it does work. It's a giant Pomona swap but you dont need to show up saturday night with a ****ing flashlight.

I wouldn't let it bother me. It might just be timing. All of the kids have just gone back to school so maybe people are just too preoccupied with that right now. I think you might have the right idea about taking it to Billetproof, at least there people that are more likely to want it will get to see it firsthand. If it doesn't sell there give it another shot in the spring when everyone is getting reved up to do a summers worth of car things. I do believe it certainly is worth more than the top bid. Try to build a duplicate for that. IMO it can't be done without a lot of free parts or free labor.
Also, did you contact the high bidder? sometimes they have a higher bid entered than what shows up because no one beat the current bid. You may be able to negotiate a sale with some off Ebay fancy foot work.

    There's no telling on ebay.
Just last week a neat little "ratty" RPU from Phoenix went for over 20 grand----it was a neat car but nothing special and with no really rare parts.
Sometimes things sell when listed again right away the next week---not everybody shops every week.....I do but I'm compulsive like that [IMG]

That's a very distinct car too. It's not a bright red A 5W with billet wheels... it's not common. Something like that, is going to be right time right place, for you the seller and the buyer. Not everyone is gonna want it, but when the right person finds it, they're gonna want it bad. I'd take it to shows, get the word around, and let it simmer in people's heads. If it were me, I wouldn't give it away, that's for sure...

  10. Drive it to the grand national Roadster show in January and park it right where everyone goes in and out and you wont own it at the end of the day. You just wont. If that doesnt work do it agian at father's day show and you'll get what you want or damn close.

i think the notoriety effects worth when

    A) the craftsman/artist is dead
    B) decades p*** AFTER it was built
    C) how often had the item been seen

its worth every penny, but "I" wouldnt pay that much because one of your ***umptions... i can build one myself for cheaper. time is the one thing some people can afford. if a person makes millions, they probably dont have time for much, so shelling out large amounts of cash for pre-built things is an option.

stick to your guns, its a neat car with a lot of personal history. if you can hold out until spring, do it. if not, try 10k.

  12. Gooch... here's a pic.
    Thanks guys,
    Sam.

  13. no, I meant in person. The car is worth what you are asking. Any traditional, running, driving, cl***y, non-**** car is worth what you are asking. Try changing the key words and I bet way more people would have seen it. Any one of us would drive that car to any show and be proud as hell. Give it another go and if it dont sell hold it. Do not ever get a job by lowering your price. Page one, chapter one of any business book.

  14. Hey,

    My $0.02 worth...

Maybe relist it and tone down the description. I personally loved the way you described the car, but it sounded like you were talking to fellow HAMBers and maybe that scared some of the potential buyerss away? I wouldnt post the burnout pics either - maybe some guys dont like the idea of it being thrashed? Maybe grab a look at the other rods on ebay fetching good money and copy thier description style etc.

Oh yeah, start the bidding at the price you want or close. Statistically auctions with a reserve dont fetch as high a price then those without.

Just my opinions but for $40 you may as well try, it might just work!

    Don’t lower your price.
My 31 p/u didn’t sell on eBay and I ended up selling it for 2000 more than it got up to on eBay. I don’t think cars bring top dollar on there

Almost everything that I have purchased is on ebay and in the last year tire kickin has escalated to alltime highs.Even 32's have gone down in the bidding fair. The reserves are not being met (still) but the bids aren't where they were. The parts I look for are not there either because they can't meet reserves.****! I can't even find a set of 6.50 16 blackwalls now.Last year it seemed that they were the only tires available . You may have to sit on it a while but, that car is the ****, the economy is in the bag and I think all the McDonalds jobs have been taken.Good luck, swaZZie.

old style rat rods are loosing steam it has went to the next faze, where you been sam??

you need to update!!!!...., a simple functional hotrod isnt good enough anymore...

    - needs at least two iron crosses
    - red wheels
    - morphidite motor (perferibly something that runs like ****)
-no floor boards( so you can flinstone the car backwards ,...the pic-n-pull trans would have no reverse)
-body needs to be 1" max off of the pavement
    - above all it needs to be undriveable!!!
    -should be trailerd everywhere
-you were in rod and custom ....you need to shoot for old skool rat rods..loose the **** tail.. stickers they like lots a stickers...especially crosses

look at it this way sam someone bid 7,900 without even driving it... sight unseen... if that guy drove it or at least saw it in person hed probely plunk down the cash..

i was pretty impressed with the ride.. you got that car dialed in pretty good ... a lot of hi buck cars have lots of qurks .....its worth it....e-bay is exposure... youd have better luck at one of them car auctions like they have at gg and other events some hi roller might want a rat rod...it might just change someones whole outlook ?

Don't get me wrong here, I dig the **** out of the car, but it would bring more with a shiney paint job. Shiney stuff will always out sell stuff that isn't.
I have even seen guys that should know better bite on that one.
Case in point; several years ago I went to a tractor auction and noticed that the shiney painted up tractors with new stickers were bringing dam near double what the faded out ones brought. One Farmall H came across the block with a barely dry shiney paint job. It had rotten wore out tires, a dead hole and was dripping water. It brought $2700. The very next one was an identical tractor with original faded and oxidzed paint but almost new rubber and a smooth running engine. It brought $800.

For the most part I don't think cars bring top dollar on ebay unless they are an original Shelby Mustang or something rare. Like the HAMBer that had the A coupe on there a couple weeks ago, the one with a pickupbed in it. Only got to like $2700 or something.WTF, I see A coupe bodys bring that much and more.
You might relist it in a couple weeks and have it bring the money, ebay is a **** shoot sometimes.

eBay slows down at the end of summer - wait a bit & relist closer to Oct. It seems to start moving again as the weather gets cooler & folks stay indoors more.

If you don't want to put certain key words in there, try changing the font so they're white & just blend into the background - the search functions will still find 'em! [IMG]

Keep fishin Sam...you'll eventually catch the big one. And capitalize on the magazine coverage it received. Goldchainers eat that **** up!
I can just hear the phone call now...
    Ring Ring..."hullo?
"Hey, this is Bob... you missed out on the deal of the year! I just bought a magazine car from some poor slob for only $13K!"
"No ****? What magazine? What? It was an Egorama contestant? It made R&C? Wow, does the guy have anymore magazine cars? The guys down at the do-nut shop in Danville will go nuts Sunday morning when you show up in that thing! Uhhhhhh, can you drive a stick? I learned to drive in Mommy's Lexus with the cushomatic, peanut ****er drive transmission"...

Ive read both your recent posts re the car ( pre Ebay add and this) I have to agree with Von tingler .. You did make it pretty plain when building the car that it was costing spit. The whole idea of it? I also dont think you can expect to get back in payment the time you put into the car, reason being is that it was a p***ion that YOU wished to realise so the time is negligable, I can never understand anyone that figures in that aspect .. Diffrent story if you were running a shop the idea is to make money, but a home build the idea is to have FUN. You may have shot yourself in the foot by being too open at the start of the build re the build costs, in addition to that wasnt a lot of the parts donated .. Folk gave the parts in good faith in the beliefe that the car would be kept? Kinda looks like you got the parts for free and are now cashing in on folks good nature .. Im just saying to some thats maybee how it looks..

The ebay add was a bit on the long side with a font that was hard to read. Cut it right down to a dozen lines, 3 words, good, safe, reliable, could cut out at least 200 words in your text, and still describe the car as a user... One trick to sell a car is not to appear over enthusiastic about the sale .. when you act as if you dont cars if the person buys it, they tend to have to work harder to have the privelage of buying it .. Make them do the work..let them ask the questiions. Have to agree with someone else .. Im not a big fan of Reserve auctions. better to start the bidding at or near the price you would like..
Hey not every one is gonna tell you how right on you are.. It is a neat car but as you well know it can be built for a fraction of what your asking.. you yorself have proved that ..

Funny how that works Sam. I have to agree with the others that say its timing. Key words help as well. If they can't find it, they can't bid! I also agree that you should play up its "star status". People go nuts over that stuff. I failed to comment on your post about the description you wrote, but I think it may have been too long. However, I, for one found it to be informative. But sometimes its best to keep quiet while selling a car. Perhaps E-Bay isn't the best place to sell..? It may do better up close and personal locally. I've sold more cars on my front lawn than I can count, but I live on a very busy road..

Anyway, just my .02. Love that car as well..

    Spike

  26. It didn't sell this week, ebay is funny, I post things and can't get $4.99 for 'em one week, the next week it sells for $80.

Your car isn't a 2 year old, low milege SUV, the right person with the right money has to be looking on ebay at the time it's listed.

Ok here's my $1.56... relist the damn thing. Don't do anything more than a paragraph of a description, keep the long one to send when someone asks a question. Lots of keywords including Rat Rod. Make it a 10 day auction....

    Can I get some change?

  28. It didn't sell because it's a HEAP OF ****!

Send it to me and I'll throw it on the tip.

You have to pay freight though...to Australia. [IMG]

Sam, seems to me you really don't want to sell it. Yeah, you could build another like it, but it wouldn't have the memories and soul that does. I understand the money thing, I've got two kids and am lucky to even make my bills. I even got a part time at the local advance auto to help. Maybe just think about it. It's none of our bussiness, but money probs come and go and usually aren't nearly as bad as they seem.
