    Hello,

On a nice, warm, sunny, So Cal day after several days of light rain from the near miss hurricane just South of San Diego, presented itself for a good opportunity in the cruiser. The weather resumed the “normal” late summer aura of cool at the beach and coastal areas, while hot or hotter inland several miles. Poor kids going back to school, just as the weird weather hits So Cal.

It was an older couple with the top down enjoying the drive to the Coast Highway, the Dana Point Harbor and shoreline. The waves from the past week’s storm were receding and a new swell was starting to arrive. So, people head for the beach that has 90% of the kids back in school and only a few umbrellas on the sand.

No rain or flooding, so get out the Model A roadster and enjoy what So Cal has to offer. The best view of the whole coast is on a point view spot overlooking the harbor and long coastline South as far as the eye can see.

If by chance anyone gets to the parking area for the few spots left, this is what you also see out of your windshield. The viewpoint starts here and it is impressive. But, a narrow trail goes to the end of the cliff top for an unobstructed view of the whole coastline looking South to San Diego.

NOTE: Right below this photo opportunity is the famous original, “Killer Dana” surf spot, well known to most. But, only in old memories since 1971.

    Hello,

The road, Coast Highway, led to a close up shot of this old restoration + repair shop that had been around for quite some time, 20 +years. But due to the awful pandemic, the beginning lockdown and the no travel restrictions, plus there are other things that came into play, the place, like a lot of small businesses closed.

Back in those early surf road trips down Coast Highway trying to reach the secret spot, just down the street at the Marine Base was the most challenging thing we used to do. But, driving through this coastal city we had our stops. The one stop was just before the main downtown street. It was a small diner window that served the best snacks, sandwiches and doughnuts/coffee for traveling folks like us. The stop was right in front on Coast Highway and just steps away for the last foodie place that was open so early in our journeys.

In those early morning road trips, the only thing open was this diner/take out window and the three gas stations along the highway. But, as time marches on, only one gas station remains as a gas station. The other one stood empty for many years at the entrance to the I-5 freeway South from Coast Highway. (just last week, it got torn down, to be replaced by a business building)

This location was a proud hot rod, car repair, cool shop for many in the local city. It was always fun to drive by and see different hot rods and old working trucks sitting around. The original gathering spot for old hot rods was a summer event that was usually just down the street at a local hot spot 50s diner. Great food, great location and easy access to an early coastal hot rod gathering. Even the high school kids used the place for their gatherings.

But, as all good things go, they closed down leaving an empty spot for great food, a local gathering spot for hot rods. Also going to be replaced with a modern business building trying to meld into the surrounding old style shops.
upload_2022-9-24_4-31-49.png This remaining old gas station had a following and it was sad to see it close, but the pandemic did a number on a lot of businesses and it was hard to recover. Now, the gas station still stands, the whole corner is empty of cool cars and what is to become of the property? It would still be a cool repair shop with plenty of exposure to thousands of travelers and locals that use the Coast Highway in their lives.

    Jnaki

It is too bad since a weekly drive to all points South on Coast Highway brought us to drive past this unusual business that always had some cool cars sitting in the covered space out in front or in the two stall garage. The 1939 black Dodge Sedan was a regular old car on display.
