You know what I'm looking farward to?
The whole "retro/ nostalgia rods are NOW cool" people to Go AWAY!
I'm wating for this trend wave to die and leave the diehards alone. I'm waiting for the rod magazines to tell the m***es something else is in style now.

I liked it all better about 5 or 6 years ago- Before it seemed like every ex-whatever wannabe went out and primered a stock 4 door 1966 clunker, painted the wheels red, and started wearing a "club" jacket.
    I liked Paso better then
I liked going to shows better then
I liked my car stuff being a smaller, tighter knit group of people that "got it"

Put down that SO CAL and MoonEyes tack on accessory catalogs, and buy Don Montgomery's books- All of them. Spend more money on car parts than you do on CD's. Spend more time working on friends cars or in your own garage than you do at the bar.

Whoa.. I just got on a soap box for minute, huh? [IMG]

But geesh, A lot of "newbillies" don't even know why they're in it. I can pretty much guarantee they don't like the tunes. Let's face it, although Hank and Cash are great...they're not "pop culture" friendly. And rods and kustoms? Hah! As soon as James Dean-A-Billy realizes that he actually has to maintain that 50 year old ride he'll sell the car and move on to the next fad.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Everytime this comes up I think where are all these SCENESTERS everyone's *****ing about with cars? I'm going to CA next month and Seattle in Dec. I really want to see some of these posuers out in the wild. Not saying Chicago doesn't have any, but there must not be enough that I even notice. [IMG]

Hehe. I'm just a guy who loves cars, a certain type of music, and kustom culture. I'm not losing sleep over a few few brash commments on a message board, trust me.

Regarding the post about "scenesters" and not seeing them: Come on out to Ballard to the Tractor Tavern on a weekend night when you're here in Seattle. You'll see em' for sure.

You know, this subject comes up every now and then and I throw in a smart-***ed comment or two. The funny thing is, I guess I've been a "greaser" since I was 15, about 19(jesuschristimgettingold)82. Since then I've listened to all sorts of music, had all sorts of friends, had all sorts of cars. I'm the most comfortable with greasy hair, a car older than '60 and old furniture/appliances. I also listen to *gasp* rockabilly, as well as punk, old jazz, old country, blues, heavy metal, some hippy music....the list goes on.

I guess the point is, **** 'em. Live how you want, as long as you enjoy yourself and it doesn't hurt anyone else...too much. The Britney Spears rockerbillies will disappear when the sixties mop look takes hold good, then you'll be back to being an outcast. At least right now the chicks dig it.

what about stage 5,,i think it was left out, something about going back to be a skater or something,HAHA,

it would be cool tho if people just in it for the scene would get lost and move on to the next "new thing"

i love cars and bikes and old music, oldies, rockabilly etc.,but why do some people have to make it into some kind of gay "im better than you" cuz i listen to blah blah blah......

...never have figured that out. i always thought it was about the cars,,, music is a seperate portion that comes together ,,but not a main factor that dictates all.... just my 2 cents

this craft seperates the men from the boys... you actually gotta work to get something to look good. if anything, it might teach the *poser* a lesson in a good days work, patience, and following through with your plans. end result might be building something he or she is proud of, thereby making the *poser* a bareable person to be around... or the opposite, in which case we send them to TEXAS for a down home boot party.

Thanks for reminding me Rudy- "LARGEST CUFFS" and "BEST BURNS"!!!!!

    [/ QUOTE ]

No no no, that's BEST cuffs and SHARPEST burns. Cuffs should be 3 to 3 1/2 inches on Levis that are new or in new condition for that "just stepped off the set of of a 70s movie about the 50s" look. Cuffs should be perfectly straight and checked with a dial caliper.

Wow, this is a depressing thread. Sometimes I start to think people just like what they like and do what they do and are real, and then I'm reminded that junior high was really just a magnifying gl***.

the really good people don't judge the book by lookin at the cover, i'll always look at a grey beard & think....i wish i could see half the things they've done with cars in their life. Having said that there are plenty of young guns with a real p***ion & talent regardless of how they dress.

I didn't know there was a litness test for being "accepted" into the holy realm of Kustom Kulture. Maybe, you all should develop a manual for the beginner. So everyone can be in the know about what has been deemed kool. The complainers are as bad as the posers. Just accept the fact that not everyone is as kool as you, nor are you as kool as you think. So now fat people can't be kool, what a bunch of mindless dribble. This is what will kill the kustom kulture movement, or whatever you call it. The music is a part as is the kustoms and hot rods. Study history and you'll see that. Just let everybody have their particular way to celebrate this type of art, or be destined to die in the hip hop loser mentality culture the m*** pop culture is feeding everyone right now. doornail

I fully agree that the majority of folks out there aren't as "kool" as me. Afterall, that's part of being kool, right?

    Kustom Culture:

    1. You like Rods or Kustoms
    2. You like Low-Brow art work
    3. You appreciate beauty in design and timelessness, whether it be in a car, woman, or art.
    4. You dig surf, rockabilly, or old time rock music.

There's my definition of Kustom Culture.

I'll be the first to admit that I personally ***ociate cuffed jeans, cl***ic hair cuts, Rat Fink, pinstripin', & Moon Eyes w/ the culture, but hey, that's just me. If your definition is different, so be it. But...ya gotta appreciate those four things above to be a "true"devotee of Kustom Culture.

I guess I must be an ORCA-FINK.....I took and p***ed the Big Daddy Roth home body-building course long ago....Kahuna raises good points, how easy is it to dismiss rockabilly ,especially now, with the p***ing of the Blonde Bomber and other greats?
I thank God every day that some new kid is asking about Dutch and Roth, or Sleepy LaBeef, or the HAZE,etc.
I have been through some UGLY and UNINSPIRED cultural times,folks....I saw the horrors of disco and the shame of oil-money built street-monstrosities 20-25 years ago...
the guys in the late 60's started bashing the earlier Kustom years and lo & behold, here come the '70's...open any old Autorama book or better yet, dig out those mags from that time period.....still wanna bash the current "fad".??

  20. I have never responded to these post before just read and get a giggle, but had to write in and say that Killer has nailed it right on the head. Not that I care to much but I would say that in my stage of life I am at stage 4. Have the college degree and listen to all types of music, have a great job at a local shop here in town and can come to work dressed like a greaser and have no problems. Killer I am printing your post out and hanging it on the garage wall at home. Nice to see a grown up greaser that thinks the same as me.

yep, I think killer nailed it. I get such a laugh at all these guys. Especially us young guys. I had a guy come up to my friend who dresses like a greaser in a bowling alley
and ask "are you rockabilly?" like it mattered the world to him. Funny ****, cuz who cares? I was dressing like this and figuring out this music AND DRIVING my cl***ic car years before I even knew there was a scene here. And when I found it I was pissed because nobody had cars but like 5 people! So I became good friends with the most down to earth guy, who also had the coolest car and we were both under 21, so when all the "COOL GREASERS" (glamourbillys, or rockaberries as I call them) were down at the tractor tavern twirlin girls around on the dancefloor, we were a few blocks away in his garage making our cars cooler. Now that I am a little older and known in the scene, I dont really give a **** about the scene. funny how that works huh? when it all comes down to it Im not a rockabilly, I am a punk rocker just like Ive always been. And the punk in me says ****'EM. -J.

  22. Jkustom same things happen here as well. We have about 50 people total that are "rockabillys" but only 3 of us have cars that we have built with our own two hands. The funnest thing that I like to watch is when Metalshapes and I go to shows and they see his roadster, which is a rockabilly's wet dream and they find out that Metalshapes is not a one at all. The other one that is funny is you or I being a vetern and they talk **** saying you did not build your car or you do not have one, and you show up at a show and then they are all buddy buddy with you and want you to come help them with the 69 caddy 4 door. Metalshapes is just a normal looking joe with huge talant for metal. I am in the same camp as you, DIY and do not care what everybody else thinks, just family and close friends/pals.

Cool. I have a lot of respect for guys who build their own stuff from the ground up. My dad is one of those guys. I'm not. I'm semi-mechanically inclined and can get by doing a little body work here and there, some brake work, and lowering stuff. For wiring & heavier duty mechanical stuff I pay to get it done. I don't like doing it and would rather pay someone else to do it right the first time. I don't have the space either.

As far as the scene here in Ballard and the Tractor...I like it. There are very few places in the country that have such thriving rockabilly scenes w/ killer live music almost every weekend. Yeah, there are some "glamourbillies," who don't have cars, but for the most part everyone seems real cool & friendly here. The folks w/ out cars appreciate what other's have built as best I can tell. I was just at the Rooks show and met quite a few local guys who have real nice cars...definitely more than five.

I feel like I need to put this topic to bed. This board is indeed about kustoms and rods, not music and "scenes." I love rockabilly music. It works for me and I grew up on it. But I made a mistake in posting something that doesn't have a ton to do w/ cars. My bad. But hey, I love rods and kustoms and that's why I'm here.

    End of topic.

Hmm, I like jazz, blues, Hendrix, AND Sublime. (and you can never go wrong playin Cypress Hill.) Also like fast, loud, good sounding, good looking cars that can take corners marked 30 MPH at 65.

I guess that makes me a HOMOposer.
