I don’t mind Bert’s version at all. In fact, I quite like it… But I LOVE the original simplicity of Mac’s.
Yeah, I'm also a fan of the original Ford beltlines. I don't think removing it helped the look of this roadster.
Yes, Mac's version was a great looking Hot Rod. I agree that the molded rear fenders ruin the body lines, but I'm a traditionalist when it comes to old Hot Rods.
version # 2 is only cool because it is a survivor. wonder how they did that to the body lines in the back and what it looks like from the inside
Thank you Ryan for posting this and thank you guys for all your input. I have been the car taker of the car for 36 years now. I've always been in a quandary about which version to restore the car to. Don Montgomery told me to leave the car the way it is and not touch it. Mac's son and daughter want it back to their fathers version. When I met Ray Brown the first thing he asked my, do you still have the motor I build. Unfortunately it was parted from the car along the way. Mac and Bert where both hard core Hot Rodders. Mac went on to Bonneville in 1949 with a T roadster and Bert teamed up with David Mitchell and raced a Olds power Allard. then Bert went on to racing Siatas. Bert ended up a Superior Court Judge in Pasadena. Bert wanted something fast, so he knew just where to go and Ray built him a full race flathead to fit the bill. The metal work is finished as smooth on the inside as out. They shrunk the reveals and added the fenders that go up into the body with very little lead. I've read it was done by Barris, but cannot confirm this. This photo is of the car now.
@Nobey so cool that you own this car, it must be tricky to know what to do with such a car, well done on looking after it!
The best would be to restore Bert's version you have now, and build a replica of Mac's. Or, just drive the heck out of it as it is now, and share the story.
As great as the earlier Schutt version is (also my favourite) car needs to stay as the Bert Mouron roadster due to the body mods. Would be better to replicate the Schutt roadster.
honestly, I’d get it on the road and leave it exactly as it is aesthetically… I think it looks rad.., and a fresh and highly detailed motor, redo the brakes, drive the piss out of it.
