no pic... but my masterful searching skills tell me that you can find a feature about it in july '63 Vol. 11 #3 of rod & custom. maybe someone here has got it and will scan it. hope that helps. -- raaf
the solar scene, built by gene winfield was a 50 merc built in the early 60's. it was chopped with wrap around winshield from a 53 merc. it had sculpted wheel wells with stainless steel inserts, the doors were power operated and swung out by themselves, the seats pivited at the same time.it had a really different set of canted quad headlights. custom rolled pan with custom bumpers front and rear. and was buick nailhead powered. just like all but 3 winfield cars it's mia.
Gene Winfield´s car, did look this way in 1963. Engine was a nailhead in a bay of chrome. Somewhere I have a set of build up shots of this one but cant remember were (Altzheimer light...). So I did snap this photo from Andy Southard JR´s great book Hot Rod´s and Custom´s of the 1960´s. But buy the book to support Andy! He needs it...
Ahh, nice thread and killer pics. Nothing to add other than that that issue of R&C is really easy to buy on Ebay. There are allways a few of them for sale.
Nice car... definatly something I've never seen before. I think what I find most interesting is the fender treatment... never seen that done before.
A little Weird look but a nice kind of cool car and color!! Why do you ask about that Car brother of mine?? ha d gött Brorsan...Halle
Somewhere in my vast storage of useless knowledge it seems to me that there was a shot of that car in Street Rodder about twenty years ago. Can't find the mag - it was probably in the box the cat had kittens in - but that trunk and wheelwell treatment was on a Merc that was in a two or three page spread on custom mercs and whatever happened to them. It was a black & white pic and the car was in primer. Someone help with this??? It might be the car Sterling Ashby has now, but sure looked like the Solar Scene.
The Solar Scene is reason enough to hunt up a copy of the July 63 Rod & Custom. But the interview with Barris,Cushenberry,Roth,Starbird, Wilheim and Winfield is some great reading. Six years before I was born but I sure wish I could have been there.
what's the windsheild out of? doesnt look merc to me.... not really my cup of tea but still a pretty wild car something i can appriate even if i would never build in that style myself
