The Spankster

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by suede55bowtie, Sep 30, 2008.

  1. Heres what Im working on right now. This was a haggard '29 Ford Briggs 4 door sedan when I got it, now its going to be a "roadster."

Im using the original frame, so far Ive kicked it up 10" in the rear and swept it up 4" in the front. The Ace Holes/Mad Fab/THEM! cars are big inspiration for me.

I just got done leveling out my front crossmember tonight as well as getting my front suspension back under the car. Drivetrain consists of a '57 Ford 9"/4 spd/'56 Ford Y-Block (thatll be here soon.)

The style Im going for is I guess sort of late '40s with an updated powerplant, dig?

Heres some pics. Ive been hammering away on it more and more everynight so expect regular updates, thanks!

  2. You've come a long way man. Yah, it's definitely got that 40's feel, especially with those rollers. Must be cool to have your own personal photographer when your building your hot rod. Haha. Cool pics for sure.

cars cool, pics are awsome!!! what was used to shoot them???

  4. That's a lot of sweep up front, have you mocked up a radiator yet? You don't want it sticking up above the cowl like a sore ****.

You could always section the grille shell and get a short radiator if it's too tall. Either way, nice start there! Looking really cool.

  6. Pretty low.

Will there be room in the ****pit for you to get down out of the airstream?
I'm guessing the windshield won't be too tall.

    The black parts look good.
    Paint or powder?

    If paint, what kind?

  7. The parts are just painted, I cant afford powdercoating. The paint is just regular Krylon gloss black. The car looks MAD low in the pictures, I just realized that. But when I leveled out my crossmember, the wishbones now have to mount a little higher so its really not that low at all considering other cars Ive seen. Ive got about 5" of ground clearance. Theres still plenty of interior room/legroom, especially since Im only about 5'6, it works out pretty well. As for the radiator, I think I might mount it in front of the crossmember..I'll figure something out.

The pics are self taken with a timer out of boredom, and the camera is a ****py 4.0 mega pixel POS hahah

Thanks guys! I should be getting those quarters tacked in today, as well as remounting my rear to pull the wheels back into the centers of the wheel wells.

  8. Thanks.

    5" clearance should do it.
My 32's lowest point is a collector 5 1/2" off the ground and it has yet to drag.

Was curious about the paint cuz I've been thinking of using Por-15 black on leaf springs and maybe the rear axle.

Man thats getting there...been eyeing the spankster for a while..cool that you got some time to wrench onit...

Are you running those wheels? IMO they are kind weak looking... I would run early steelies... somthing stronger to handle the Y-Not Block and the rear...

I get your early 40's updated look... But I think if they would of updated the motor they would of updated the wheels and everything else....if your running all this "Newer" parts the car might look confused with the really early parts...You can achieve a correct look by building it more of a 50's car since thats when we were using allot of overheads and modern rears...
If you were going to run a 4 cyl and banjo rear I would say yes...but I think its just going to be confused looking,,, I'm not bashing just giving my opinion,.. I dig watching this progress and I just want to give advise..

  12. Fasho evel I get what your saying. And hell no Im not running those wire wheels haha, theyre way weak, and even if they weren't, its not the look Im after. Im just using them for mockup. I got a set of 16" '40 Ford steel wheels going on this.

Thanks everyone for your imput. Updates will be up tonight, no later than around 3am.

  13. I'd get a radiator before I went any further, it'll save you from cutting the frame in half and re-doing it(don't ask how I know). I thought about putting it in front of the crossmember, but where would the hose go? Seriously, I'd get a mock-up radiator.

Cool... Ya I would get those wheels all mounted and bolted on the the rear and front too .. and build the car around them..that way you will be able to get the stance right on...food for thought,,,

    go man go..

Great project, there is something really special about the photo quality, and look of the shop, looks like a real time warp. I like the upswept frame, thinking about that feature on my '30 Roadster project. The Briggs cowl looks nice with the posts removed and cowl band work, nice door to tail bead alignment work too. Keep the progress photos coming.

It is looking really good. I can't wait to see it at a show.

  22. Bodys fully tacked, just gotta get the width of an A decklid and brace the rear so I can start mocking it up. Also remounted my wishbones tonight. I was laughing while working on it thinking, I turned a 4 door sedan into a "roadster pickup" and then a "roadster pickup" into a "roadster" hahhahah

Deck lid it TAPERED 35 3/8 across the bottom and 36 1/2 across the top. Never knew that til I just measured one.

  24. Thanks man! Bodys off the blocks, and braced in the rear. Ima slap it on my frame tomorrow to see how she looks

    STAY TUNED!

  25. Cool build man, keep on it while you have the bug.
It looks like your working by candle light, thats how your images come out, 'now thats traditional'............hahahahahahhaa

  26. Mockup. Ima take the body off in a little bit and shorten the wheelbase back to stock. When I kicked it up in the rear, the way I did the Z I left alot of frame between the actual kickup and the rear crossmember, so I'll just cut it down. Everythings tacked right and will be welded professionally from my dads buddy...that is after I get the motor and trans mounted.

We need some updates mah man!! hows this thing goin?

  28. Funny you should bring this thread up! After a few nights of being out with friends and ****, I decided to sit this one in and spend time with my car.

Got alot done tonight, shortened my wheelbase back to stock and redid the rear kickup after I found a problem with its previous attemp haha. Ive pretty much done everything on this car TWICE but I guess thats what happens with someones first build? Learn learn learn, indeed. PICS TOMORROW (batteries have to charge)! STAY TUNED!
