The Spankster

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by suede55bowtie, Sep 30, 2008.

  1. Thanks guys! Next up is to redo my rear shock mounts (feeling more and more confident in my fab skills, so time to do some housecleaning) mount my motor/trans, get trans member squared away and then tear it apart to box the frame and begin final ***embly. While my motors mocked up I'll start on my headers. Tax returns are gonna pay for radiator, driveshaft, and headlights (I REALLY want Guide 682-c units, anybody have some for cheap, cheaper than speedway at least?)

More to come!!!! Thanks again everyone thats been following.

  7. Finished rear shock mounts tonight, body mounts are done and welded to the frame too. Steel should be here in the next 24 hours. I'm giving myself a week flat to FINISH my ch***is, and have it tore down for prep work, welding, and painting.

    It's down to the wire.

Go Charlie Go !, Your rod is getting closer. Looking forward to your progress as the finished ch***is goes back together. Will the mill be hopped up a bit ? If you need a cam check with McTim64 . He is in Central Calif. I will be getting a cam for my Marine Y-Block from Tim. Price is reasonable around $100. May need longer push rods.

  9. Well I gave myself a week to finish my frame, I wound up finishing it in 2 days.

Heres a few pics from recent progress.

    K-member done
Boxing plates are cut (going in when final welds are laid on the frame)
    New drag links cut
    Motor mounts done
    Trans member done
    Floor is about 75% done
    Radiator is here
Motor goes in for rebuild in a few days along with trans

Only 3 things left to buy/find: Driveshaft, Wiring kit, and Hurst shift kit.

    Happy much? I think so:D

In this pic, don't mind those 2 peices of angle. Those were temporarily tacked to the body to keep it square. Also notice the transmission is solid mounted, when final ***embly happens it's getting rubber mounts same as the motor.

  10. Few more.

    Thanks everyone!

  11. Few more of the frame. Just tacked in these pictures, tube ends unfilled, no gussets, and boxing plates still out.

  12. And yet, some more. Radiator pokes a few inches above the cowl but I'm not worried aobut it. Floors about 50% there in this pic too.

  13. The drivetrain in this car is from a '56 F100...Couldn't I use a driveshaft from one and have it shortened?

Should be able to. I used a chevy driveshaft and had it retubed for my 28 with all the drive train from a 75 GMC. Worked fin.

Nice to see you on here as well pal. As always, car looks good.

  16. Thanks guys. Over the past 2 days I scored a driveshaft (working that out still) AND an old '50s Fenton 3 speed shifter in good working order, old chrome and everything. Sweet.

  18. At the moment suprisingly not too much. I found my shifter and my driveshaft, those will be in the mail soon. The shifter is AWESOME, an OLD Fenton 3 speed with a really cool looking knob:D

Motor goes to the machine shop this Sunday, the phrase "Hey DOOD I'm on cloud 9" doesn't even touch how I feel right now.

This thread has been in my head for two months. I'm glad it popped up again, and I didn't miss it.
    Great work.

  21. Quicky update fellas: Motor was brought to the machine shop this past Sunday. Good news, it's not frozen up!!!!! Theyre dipping the block and working over the heads as I type. So ****ing stoked! Its 6am right now and I just got done doing a bunch of ACT pre-test **** to get my *** back in school. Today's to-do list is finish cutting boxing plates and possibly get my headers bent. Hopefully I'll be cruising around in the next few months!

  22. Lets see if I can find some recent pics of what I've been up to though...

  23. Ordered a new set of pushrods, gasket set, and a few other odds and ends for my motor. The shop couldnt dip smaller parts so they gave me every nut and bolt from my engine to clean myself. I had 2 batches of vinegar in my garage stripping everything. I finally finished cleaning EVERY peice of hardware at 6 this morning. Peices turned out great looking, I packaged everything by size and its ready to go. Block should be stripped in the next 2 weeks. They're also polishing and mic'ing my crank and cam just to make sure everythings straight. Should be popping my motor off in the next 6 weeks. I'll keep you guys updated.

Charlie, You are getting real close to that first cruise in your Hot Rod ! Looking forward to seeing you with a great big smile on your face !

  27. Thanks guys! Gotta admit I'm starting to lose sleep over it. I went to the machine shop today to situate paperwork and such on everything. Said they should be rolling on it like I said in a couple weeks. They're swamped right now with bigger projects.

The ch***is on the otherhand will be going back together (for good) the first week of June. The fab shop has a slow week coming up so I'll be there finishing up my frame. The boss/owner is letting me use the whole shop for buying a few guys some cases of beer. Goes to show that even if you don't have the tools or the space to build a car, pull your **** together call a few contacts and you can make things happen. I built this whole car with nothing more than a 4 1/2" angle grinder and a little 110 welder to stick parts together. The shop I've got my frame at is fully equipped with 220 Miller MIG/TIG welders, punches, a lathe, breaks, shears, rollers and tons more industrial sized rad tools...

Its been a week.. Hows things coming?

    Jeff

  30. Major development! Motor will be done in the next WEEK. Randy down at the machine shop wound up dipping it and polishing everything at the last minute to save me some time. Awesome! ANOTHER thing! Dig this! The motor I have ISNT a 272! We found out its ACTUALLY, a 1954 239, that was bored back in the day .50 OVER! The crank had work to it too! What the hell! So after he dipped it and cleaned everything up, we ordered new drain plugs and crank bearings. When those get here, Randys gonna puttem in and give me back everything. Should be hearing this thing in the next month. Stoked!!
