The Swedes do Route 66 & VLV10 in a '58 Bel Air

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by kuztomklaus, Mar 11, 2007.

  1. My friend Magnus, my wife and I started talking about cruizing Route 66 Five years ago. Now it's only a week away.... Woohoooo!! : )

We're flying in to Newark NJ March 20th. We'll drive up to the Rodeo Bar in NYC and have the best damn dinner EVER! Hope that HAMB'er fattymacguire will show, since he sold Magnus the '58 Bel Air we're using for our road trip.

Then we'll cruise down to South Jersey/Philly for a couple of days before we head off to Chicago. We'll be in Chicago by the 23rd or 24th. Then we'll start our adventure and cruise our way down The Mother Road. Hitting as many of the ancient relics and awesome restored Route 66 sites. We'll try to catch a flick at the 66 Drive-In theater in Carthage MO (if their open yet). When we reach Texas we'll take a detour down to Austin for The Lonestar Roundup. Then back up and continue on our 66 trip and shoot up to VLV10 from New Mexico. After that we'll drive back down south and start again in Arizona and end our trip in CA, have a couple of days there ... checking out Petersens Museum, SoCal Speed Shop, NHRA Museum and the likes.

Then we fly back to Philly and visit with some friends before we head back to Sweden. The '58 will be left in CA for export! A trip of a lifetime!!

We'll be on line while we're in the States ... so if you have any suggestions, want to meet up somewhere in your neck of the woods or have a must see that's not so known ... drop us a line!

    Klaus

I'm in SE Penna, about 35 miles North of Philadelphia - maybe could meet you.................

Are you going through Amarillo? If so I'll suggest you catch a meal at "The Big Texan". You'll see signs advertising their "free* 72 ounce steak dinner" along the road. Great atmosphere and really good food. Last time I was there we had their 4 kinds of meat and 4 different vegies all served in a huge skillet. We were all stufed.

And during the meals there's entertainment -- strolling musicians or a close-up magician. Fun place to eat!

We will definitely keep you posted as we go along. Hey Fatty it would be great if you'd meet us next Tuesday in NY. Please bring Bob, the more the merrier : )

It would be great to meet up some where along the way and the drive-in is a good choice. (Anybody know when they open? Their website said April, but not an exact date!)

The big Texan is on our agenda, we might even stay in the hotel next door. Then we can eat till we tumble and then just crawl to bed!

    Flat-top Bob I pm'd you about particulars!

Dave, it's probably not the same '58 since this one has a straight six and a powerglide!

21tat we're in Vegas for Viva Las Vegas April 6 - 9. See you there!

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I will be cruisin' the Mother Road in April too. My dad and his twin brother are driving the RV pulling a trailer with their bikes. I am flying out to meet them in OK City, then we are driving to CA.

Last March my dad got real sick with heart trouble. He wound up in the cardiac ICU for 2 months and almost died twice. In the middle of all this he said that he always wanted to take a tour of Route 66. I promised him that when he got out we would do it.

When they got him stable they gave him 6 months to live and put him on the list for a heart transplant. We celebrated his 63rd birthday the next day. Then just 3 days after he got on the list, they found a donor. The next day they put it in, that was May 16 last year. Two weeks later he was home at my sister's house. It's been nearly a year and he has had no rejection or any other major issues. He is the luckiest person I know.

Our trip together will be about 10 days, April 14th to the 23rd. I will fly out to OKC Friday the 13th, and we will go to the NSRA SW Nats there on Saturday morning. Then we are off to Cali, ending up at Pomona on Sunday the 22nd.

Unfortunately my dad has not got his 55 2dr post ready to make the trip. He stripped it down to repaint it in the late 80's and it sat that way until a few months ago. It is mostly in finished primer now and should be painted this summer. I hope I never get so unmotivated that it takes such an event to get me off my ass!

If anyone can suggest things that we should not miss along the way, we sure would appreciate the input. Our schedule is flexible, since we are bringing the hotel room with us. Maybe we can meet up with fellow HAMBers out roaming around!

    Take care,
    -SeeDan

I need to go that route one day also!!! I envy you just a little bit!!!! ;)

    See you in Vegas!!!!

  27. Synthsis ... I guess you were being funny ... it IS the car that Hot Rod Scott has been driving for months now! He went up and bought it for Magnus and has been getting her ready for this road trip!

Wild Turkey ... we're painfully aware that there are no shortcuts down to Austin! We'll probably shoot down from Oklahoma City ... that's highway all the way. The other option is to shoot down from Shamrock which isn't easy and there are smaller roads ... but we'll see!

Flat Top Ernie ... we're gonna meet up with a friend from MySpace in ALB at some cool diner or lounge or something. PM us your digits and we'll give you a shout when we're in ALB!

Mike ... PM your digits ... we'd love to hit the tiki bar with you! We might be staying outside the city (between Joliet and Chicago) but considering we're tiki freaks, we'd love to meet there. Maybe give us an address to the tiki bar so we know where it is! Ha ha!

Kuztomklaus, it sounds like you all are going to have a blast.

My pal and fellow Rattler Lars (flatred53) and his wife Karin will be flying from Sweden to Phoenix to hitch a ride with the Rattler's caravan of kooky heaps headed for VLV. I belive that Lars and Magnus know each other, so I reckon we'll all meet each other at VLV at some point.

Also, I see that you all will be passing through Arizona. If you end up in the Phoenix area, give me a hollar, I'll guide you throgh the Phoenix hot rod scene and we'll see what trouble we can cause. I'll PM you with my phone number.

    Later, Mike

Hey, C&K, I'm packing my bags now, how about you guys? We need to get some Gentleman Jack's as we land, top priority!! And there will be some gloggs

  30. Not packing yet ... we're gathering. Just about to drive into HBG to buy money (that sounds strange!!). Think Cindy will pack while I'm slaving at work on Monday! It's hard to decide what to take with ... it's snowing in Philly right now! I guess we have to pack for winter into summer!

    See ya'll very soon
