Sorry, I've got my dad's 1963 Submariner. Not bling, not fashion. He bought it becuase he was a scuba instructor. I'll take a JJ automatic Tachymetre in stainless with a stainless band please. Ryan, I know the exact Tag Monaco you mentioned. I've been wanting it for some time now. I'm saving up for a Hamilton Ventura at the moment. Shawn
I always just used my head and have been very sucessful in finding just how far off my speedo's are on all my vehicles. Its always been an easy calculation at a mile per minute. The real fun is matching speed to the sound or pitch of the engine.
...this thread nurtures another addiction...i am lost... saving up right now for a Benrus Sky Chief or a vintage Omega speedmaster
you could allways count the seconds it takes to cover a mile and devide 3600 by the amount of seconds equaling your speed so crazy eddie covered his mile in 45 seconds at 80 mph lets say he did it in 51 seconds 3600 devided by 51 = 70.58 mph since most cell phones have stop watches and calculators you can basically get a reading any time any where with mile markers those are some damn fine looking time peices though dont get me wrong
To bad 95% of the "measured miles" on the interstate system aren't accurate... I'd rather you use the radar....correctly.
In the 30's and 40's Jaeger LeCoultre made military watches for the men in service and they are simply amazing works of art
IMO there's something very special about a 50 y/o+ tiny precision machine accurately counting out the seconds of your life, powered only by the movements of your wrist as you go about living that life. Like a great old car, pure mechanical beauty.
the appeal is very romantic, and can appreciate the engineering behind it, however, in reality its just another 'feature'/gimic that offers little other than a 'warm-n-fuzzy' feeling. Don't get me wrong, if one is made I'd want one, but for all the wrong reasons, after all, unless I can find a measured mile to hit at speed, what true service does it offer? Doesn't this romance conflict, and to be blunt 'mock' the technical beauty the other mentioned watches offer? I'll have mine with an engine turned dial face.....and a mini GPS speed readout within, that can list the top speed reached....(with the needle rotating from a green 'legal' speed to a red 'less-legal' zone, kinda like a tacho....but on my watch) Cheers, Drewfus
My girlfriend is a watchmaker, she has worked on them all, and she'd rather have an Omega than a Rolex any day... But she collects ladies art deco watches from the 30's and 40's...about 200 of them. a few men's watches came along too. Most of them have crap movements, but look nice, and every one of them works... If you call the dial a face, she'll push you down by yours. Tag's have too many proprietary parts anyway. I wear an old 50's Hamilton when we go out, or an automatic Seiko flea market find she fixed up for me... The other three are all men's watches, even though the square Elgin one looks a little small. She'd probably make me buy the automatic... Quartz is the enemy, Quartz is for Schmoes.
Yea, I had one once...fell out of my bag on a flight to NYC. I put it in my bag to go through security, and forgot to zip it up, then put it under the seat in front of me. Didn't realize I lost it until the next day when I woke up to go to meetings. That was 3 or 4 years ago.
Couldn't have posted this a couple of weeks a go could you. Two weeks ago. Wife, "What do you want for your birthday?" Me, "Nothing, I can't think of anything I really need." If this had been posted two weeks ago, ((and I had seen it. It was after all posted last Friday, (a day after my birthday, by the way) and I only now saw it). Wife, "What do you want for your birthday?" Me, "Oh, I don't know, maybe a Christopher Ward C70 Brooklands." Man I could be wearing a Tachymetre/Tachymeter right now. I have to say I'm pretty bummed, timing is everything.
