Woops Todd I swear I thought I sent you some pics, not any real progress since the last time I sent pics, just mounted on the truck now anyways I'll keep you updated. Mike
yeah yeah....talk to the hand girlfreind! hope you and sam can make it up for a few next weekend...i guess you can bring the gals if ya want!
It may not be a $30k Deuce, and you're not sipping $30 bourbon, But it sure is fun and it ain't looking wrong to me either ! Keep on Truckin' (I'm doing a similar low-buck thing with a '42 Jimmy truckcab that came overhere courtesy the USNavy on D-day '44) And i don't know how much headroom you need after all the "beer" but a little chop in the top will look better in my humble opinion...
Radiator is mounted. I welded it after taking photo. I want to mount the grille shell where it can tilt forward slightly for access to the cap. Any ideas? The shroud will be attached to the radiator mounts and remain in place while tilting the grille.
Black hose. And how are you going to bolt it to the mounts you welded on? Your mounting tabs on the rad. are facing forward?
It is bolted to the angle iron through the flange on front of the radiator, which is really for the shroud. I only welded the outside of the angle, I may cut them back off and move them back, and use the flange on back of the radiator. I just wanted to get it on there for now, instead of it keeping falling over and possibly get damaged. Unclee already berated me for not doing it that way in the first place. D'oh! Oh well, no mistakes in metalwork, just more welding and grinding!
I hear that,,,, I removed the rad. from my 72 GMC,,, Lend it up along side the trash can and shur as shit it fell over on the only "bolt" lying on the floor.
Richard I used 1"square tubng to mount my mustang rad.I made a u shaped cradle that bolts to tabs welded to the crossmember then the Rad slides down into the cradle and bolts thru the flange on the rad. that way I can remove the whole cradle or lift the rad out of the cradle if needed it has made motor removal much easier than having tall mounts like that permanately mounted to the crossmember. I hope that made sense anyway just a suggestion. Mike
Thanks Mike, I am thinking I will come up with a better way to mount it. I may make the grille lift off like that instead of tilting, may be simpler. How about a photo?
Anybody got some steelies and spider caps/rings I can borrow for a few months, to see if I like them? I'll paint them for free, and buy them after the Roundup if they are for sale.
Got my axles over the weekend. They did a nice job. I used Sid(55 Mercury) baecuse he did the spindles as well as the axle, and modified the $35 kingpins, I forgot what year, and made new thrust bearings, for $20, so I didn't need to buy the $120 kingpins, even had them brought back to Houston for free. www.droppedaxle.com After dropping the steering arms to match, re welded and re-tapered the holes so I can mt. the tierod underneath. I would use him again with no problem.
In case anyone missed this on the HAMB Thrash thread: CHANGE OF PLANS Dave(Xtralow 60) has offered the use of his shop. He has more room, and more tools. This will be closer for everybody as well. Dave's shop address for Mapquest: 112 Campbell Ave. Pasadena, TX 77502 Ph# 281-216-2775 As a bonus, you will see some really cool in-progress hot rods and lowriders they are building. Thanks in advance.
Looking forward to seeing all who show up. Even if you dont come to work on it , just stop by and hang out .
Excellent development! There should be enough talent there to get that thing roughed out. I'll make it by later, gotta help Kisam make her deadline, you know.
Well we had a good day, and got alot done and Richard drank alot of beer. I think the truck will make it to the Roundup, if it stays on track like it did yesterday.
Thanks to all who showed, She's coming back home tomorrow, WAY closer to finished. Pics when I find the camera.
Post up them pics dammit! Sorry I could not make it. Had to: drive out my old king pin bearings, bead blast and paint spindles, replace all flexible brake lines, run all new brake hard lines, figure out how to mount new dual circuit master....etc. In my defense I just want to be able to caravan with you up to round up bro....cuz your shit better be on the road by then if mine is, or I'll help you load it into the bed of my truck and drive it to austin, with you sittin' in it.
The arrows are where I compensated for the thickness of the material for the bends. I forgot to take any more shots after it as cut out. It fit good on this side, but the other had to be cut off, and welded back on. Half inch plate is hard to calculate and bend correctly! I wanted to make sure the box could be removed later, so I tacked it together before going any further. Needs a little trimming, maybe a few "lightening" holes. Looks a little bulky, but with the way the box is designed, I can't think of any other strong way to mount it. It's only tacked on for now, if anyone has a better idea, please let me know.
We made new motor mounts, to raise the engine and line every thing up better. The scoops are just low enough that I could run a hood if I wanted.
