Good thread! Here's a couple of shots of Roy's Cafe in beautiful downtown Amboy, CA. The guy pumping gas into our OT car owns the place now (check out those gas prices!) and is trying to get permits to reopen the cafe and motel. The county of San Bernardino and the EPA are making it difficult. Amboy is between "Kingman, Barstow,".....etc. There are many miles of the original highway here.

The old picture is of downtown Barstow in the mid to late 40's. Main street Barstow was also Rt 66. The picture looks east. Folks travelling from L.A. to Vegas in those days came up through Cajon Pass, Victorville, and then into Barstow. They took a left turn right at the Standard station which put them onto Highway 91, the main route to Vegas at that time. That Standard station was all under roof, had several pump islands, and for a few years about this time pumped more gas than any other station in the U.S.
