had an elcamino as a daily back in the 80's. it was a lot of fun and hauled quite a bit of stuff. the ass end was real light so it would do great burnouts but i had to carried a sbc around one whole winter for traction in the snow.
For an extensive history of the ute in many different flavors check out Larry O'Toole's book "The Good Old Aussie Ute" from Grafitti Publications....
OK, now all you guys know what to do with them stripped and cut up car bodies. No more cut down modifieds, build a ute.
I like the American UTEs (El Camino/Ranchero) but I never really liked the Australian UTEs until I saw the one at the top of this thread. That one I would definitely drive.
Ryan, what took YOU so long? Hey,did you do a search? There is already a FABULOUS ute thread already under way. Gottagobye BanjeauX Bob
Utes are easy to get into the country,,, once you find one, that's is getting to be the hard part,, along with thier dollar now kicking our but. When we bought our first it was .72 to our dollar, now it is 1.07 to the US dollar. And it was 7 years ago before the big metal recycling started. I have brought in 5 of them, if anyone would like some help, pm me and I will share what I know. I just rolled my 53 Ford into our new backyard and will start on it after Speed Week Check out Chick's Ute at www.chicksspeedshop.com
That's AWESOME! I know absolutely nothing about "The Ute" right now. But i bet i find out real quick!
I'd LOVE to own a ute. I spotted this at the Turkey Run a few years back, I had never seen a shoebox ford ute. It was cooooooool. Rich
You go down far enough South and you'll see these currently being made. I think they're fricken cool!
Shot these last year at a Mopar Show in Colorado - borderline OT year wise but right now someone is thinking what would that look like with a straight axle & a Blown Hemi . . . can ya do an Altered wheel base UTE?
Always thought they were among the coolest rides on the Planet ! Too bad they're not closer to our part of the Planet !! Jonnie www.legends.thewwbc.net
I never liked Utes (too slabsided), but I must admit that Chevrolet in the blog post is pretty nice looking. -Dave
That looks REALLY good... why aren't more clapped-out station wagons converted to utes? You'd have the tail gate and bed interior done by the factory... the one here looks like it has an F100 roof grafted on, cleaning it up nicer than most of the converted wagons/ranchers you see. -Brad
GM still does this. They offer all sorts of cool stuff elsewhere but not here and then they wonder why they suck.
I like "American" utes - El Camino, Ranchero, Falcon Ranchero, etc... The Aussie utes often looked out of proportion to me. The 1/4 windows look too short on a lot of them. I love the pre-war Ford utes but I'd have to swap roofs with an America 5wd turret top. That short 1/4 window is the only thing holding them back for me. The Chevy Ryan posted at the top is gorgeous! The short 1/4 window on it doesn't bother me for some reason. JH
Haha don't put a early 60s US Falcon Ranchero against a OZ Falcon ute the US version really looks awkward. What kills it for me is the almost vertical B pillar and the the doors seem 2-3" too long
